[slm] I am not sure if this is the right department for this question but here goes. I bake a lot for my family. I have been using pure vanilla as a flavoring for cookies, quick breads, etc. I read somewhere that Vanilla is haram? Is this correct? If so does that include the "pure extract" variety or just the imitation variety? I love to bake for my family and friends and so I am cautious on what I use. I don't want to make a mistake and use something in my baking that is haram because my family and non-Muslim friends all know that I converted to Islam last year. Some of my extended family would love to jump on the chance to say, "Aha! I thought that wasn't allowed for dietary consumption". They are really good at knowing what I am NOT supposed to do or use, but will not listen to what I can do! Go figure. Yasmeena [wlm] |

[slm] Most natural flavors use alcohol as a solvent. For example, the last time I checked out a flask of natural vanilla at costco, it had like 75% alcohol. Check out the flavor extracts in the food section of your nearest Albertson's also. They are also alcohol based. Dangerous stuff. Anyways, some sister posted, a while ago, that she puts vanilla beans in a sugar jar and use that sugar for baking. |

[slm] Thanks for the suggestion! I'll try that tomorrow. I'll just check the sugar every few days to see when it's ready to use. I have a gallon size jar that might be perfect to keep the sugar in, too. [wlm] |

Assalamu Alaikum You can read this website. Read first to the right, the "Did you know?" section, and then to the left they have suggestion for substitutes(click on vanilla) Note that for vanilla powder(different from vanilla extract), you should still be carefull about alcohol, and it is better to call the manufacturer. They might tell you that the alcohol has evaporated during the process, which might be true, but it is best to ask scholars for these circumstances. There are vanilla extracts that are alcohol-free anyways,as you will see on the website. http://www.eat-halal.com/cooking.shtml |

[slm] Thank you for the web-site. I printed off the substitute list. I had already found vanilla powder at a local market. It is a little expensive, but my family is worth it! :-/ Yasmeena [wlm] |
