Is your lunchtime food halaal???

Recently it has been brought to my attention that alot of the foods we buy during our lunchtime is haraam and we do not even realise it.

High street shops and many supermarkets e.g. Boots stock a suitable for vegetarians variety in pasta, sandwiches, pitta bread and other lunchtime specials.

However we must NOT feel assured that a product is halaal just because the label says 'suitable for vegetarians'.  We should read the ingrediants.  In many cases alcohol was found in these vegetarian selections and as a Muslim it is haraam(forbidden) for us to consume alcohol.

Ingrediants to watch out for are:

Spirit vineagar, white wine vineagar (most mayonnaise have some type of alcoholic vineagar in them) Also check your ketchup and other sauces that you use for cooking.

Chicken Burger fans like myself, beware of the mayo in your next burger.

Lecithin (unless it is stated to be of soya origin which is animal additive free)

I have written to Boots about their range (without mayonaise) and they have alhumdulillah introduced a new type of labelling.  Please let me know if the Boots in your area have begun to introduce the new style of labelling and selection that includes mayonnaise free sandwiches.

Interesting point is that vegetarian food in a particular state in the U.S (I forget which)  ???  is labelled as vegetarian(alcohol free)

There is also a really cool site listing all the halaal restaurants in the U.K, insha'allah will locate link and post soon.

I just asked someone again about spirit vineagar, they deemed it halaal on the basis that it does not intoxicate.

I'm so confused  ??? now, can anyone clarify as to whether it is indeed haraam to have traces of alcohol in your food sauces. i.e mayonnaise, ketchup etc
