Operating Systems

Well I figured I'd start another 'geeky' topic in the Hikmah forum again.

Anyhow, so I had a series of questions:

1. What was the first OS you used?

2. What's your favorite OS?

3. What's your worst OS?

4. Have you ever had the desire to make your own OS?

5. What features would you like to have in an OS?

Maybe I'll add some more questions later insha Allah.

1. What was the first OS you used?
MS DOS 2.0

2. What's your favorite OS?
Depends on what I'm doing. For general use, Win2K is the best I've used yet. If I'm coding, Sun's solaris is my choice.

3. What's your worst OS?
MacOS. It is either made for *really* stupid people or I'm really stupid. Like for instance, if you insert a floppy disk into a Mac and you want to get it out, there isn't any button you can press. You have to drag the floppy icon to the trashcan to get your disc! Talk about bad UI.

4. Have you ever had the desire to make your own OS?
lol .. no, I haven't reached that level of "geekiness" yet

5. What features would you like to have in an OS?
The O/S should crash on me if I'm on the computer and it's getting late for salat (like right now).

1. What was the first OS you used?
MS Dos..... or was it MS windows 3.1 !!! .... yea it was good old DOS

2. What's your favorite OS?
For personal machine: MS Windows 97 with explorer 4 coz that combination seldom crashed on me, In office: win2k

3. What's your worst OS?
MS WINDOWS :P all of em

4. Have you ever had the desire to make your own OS?
and my friends always made fun of me for that :)   but that would be such a wastage of time, no? I mean why try to invent the wheel again !!

5. What features would you like to have in an OS?
intercompatibility with the file formats of all other famous OSs all files, word editor, media, etc

And has anyone used LINDOWS ?! how good is that as compared to windows ?!

Best OS would be Windows XP.  Windows 2k isn't bad, but XP is much better, it boots up so much faster then any OS out there.

Bootup time is just one metric.  Although is XP is rock solid when compared to earlier MS OSes,  I still managed to crash it several times.  When it comes to price,  stability,  configurability,  and mission critical apps,  linux is the way to go.  I really like some of the features introduced in XP though,  and it is striving hard to get better.

BTW,  I use XP as my main OS.

PS: Anyone seen Knoppix?  Its a really cool, run-from-cd, german distribution of linux with a hardware ID engine on par with XP.

Hehe sorry to hear about your laptop, maybe it's still under warranty? Check, because it may still be under a limited warranty plan.

I know some sisters who have mad coding skillz. Infact I read somewhere that there are a lot more women into computing than is accounted for. My old boss was a lady and she used to code on the mainframes back in the 70's  :o

Ok I guess it's time for me to answer:

1. First OS ever used:

I don't remember the name of the OS but it was the one that came with the Apple ][e, gosh that was a long time ago and i was a wee tyke back then.

2. This is a tough question. Depends on what I'm using the OS for. I am using Win2K SP3 (gotta love those service packs) and for the most part it is pretty stable. So I would have to say my favorite desktop OS is Win2K and network/database OS is FreeBSD 3.x/4.x/5.x

3. Worst OS? Solaris. I was a big fan of Sun OS Svr 4 but when they went to their Solaris line everything started going downhill. Wanna know why I hate it? Why do I have load 'special' licensing software just to use the native Sun C/C++ compilers?

4. Nah not really, I feel there are a lot of super OSes out there, but I would like to get into some FreeBSD/Linux kernel hacking and maybe some device driver development too. I know masha Allah Bhaloo is like a device driver guru  ;)

5. Features? Oh so many, too many infact.

Well I would love for there to be a filesystem that self organizes files based on meta data. It's get to a be a real hassle sometimes to have to organize my digital pictures.

I read somewhere that Longhorn (next Windows OS) will be incorperating a new FS called WinFS which is based on a SQL Server engine, apparently filenames, directories will be indexed as well as metadata associated with those files to allow users to locate files easier.

Heheh.. We here at Oracle have already "been there, done that"  ;)
Check out the Oracle iFS http://otn.oracle.com/products/ifs/htdocs/9ifsGeneralFAQ.html

This is what all oracle employees use for content management and I have to say that I'm really impressed. I can access the same file via the internet (from files.oraclecorp.com) or from my desktop (just like any other folder) or from Unix (just like any other drive). In addition to that, there is file versioning, file locking etc. Really neat.

well let me just put on my  8) and join in here.... yes i'm a geek too ;)

1. What was the first OS you used?
vax  mainframes... good ole vax mail and we had our own student BBS's set up and of course irc and other fun stuff

2. What's your favorite OS?
unix probably... it's what i use to do all the webpage stuff

3. What's your worst OS?
have to agree with those who say windows... 95 probably the worst followed by 98, although NT seemed to be somewhat stable

4. Have you ever had the desire to make your own OS?
someone needs to topple the microsoft empire

5. What features would you like to have in an OS?
flexibility and compatibility opensource

ahaha this brings up memories of when i used to work in the userrooms.. u know what we used to do!! get a safety pin and stick in the little manual eject hole and out would pop the disc ;)

To remove the disk from a MAC system that has the mouse missing ??? or the system crashed, just stick a pin (i used to unwind a paperclip) into the little hole on the disk drive.

Jannah, that list is way too nerdy, what kind of person recommends Unix? ???  Hahahahahhahahaha.  Also get with the program and upgrade you system to a real OS, win XP or at the very minimum win 2k, don't be using some OS that is 7 to 8  years old.

Dude bhaloo, WinXP is not all that, it still uses the same Win2K kernel. The only thing decent about Win2K kernel is that its 100% 32-bit (no old 16-bit layer running alongside it like in Win9x/Me) and that the TCP/IP stack was rewritten.

Otherwise WinXP still has a loooooooooooooooong way to go to even compete against the power and stability of UNIX/Linux in general.

So do they give complimentary paperclips with a Mac  ;)

I guess the reason I really hate Macs is due to this incident: We had an English paper due and the professor was real strict about having the paper on his desk 1 minute after the class began. Now, as usual, I was printing out the paper at the last minute at a Mac Lab and the document refused to open in the Mac where I inserted my desk. So I wanted to get the disk out and take it to a PC lab but since this was the first time I was using a Mac, I was completely clueless about how to get the disk out! So basically I ended up being penalized for getting the paper in late for no fault of mine (well, maybe a little of it was my fault. After all, no one forced me to goto the Mac lab ;)

But one thing I've noticed is how fiercely Mac-lovers defend the Mac. It is quite funny to provoke them sometimes :)

heh :) bro bhaloo, not exactly. But yes Unix/Linux is so hard to use, i myself used Redhat Linux it had comparatively better UI but still its no match for windows when it comes to user friendliness and conversely windows, even XP, is no match for the power and stability of Unix/Linux and thats the reason why at my previous workplace they shifted Severs to Redhat Linux and we are shifting to Linux here at my new workplace as well.

And whenever i get to use a Unix based machine i feel like a rodeo :P no kiddin...
