[slm]  A new trend in Saudi?  Or something going on in the rest of the world as well?  Sub7anAllah, how sad... :'(

Number of Single Women May Double by 2007
M. Ghazanfar Ali Khan, Arab News Staff

RIYADH, 5 June 2003 — A Saudi sociologist has warned that the number of single Saudi women could more than double to four million by 2007 because of social problems spawned by the Kingdom’s economic and social growth.

More than 20 percent of marriages last year ended in divorce.

Professor Abdullah Al-Fawzan, a sociologist at King Saud University, has cautioned that polygamy is responsible for up to 55 percent of divorces. He said that changing times impacted on relationships and led to a loss of honesty, sincerity, love, compassion and cooperation. There are now 1.5 million single Saudi women.

He expressed concern that more than 18,000 out of 60,000 marriages solemnized in 2001 ended in divorce. One of the strongest statistical findings was that the higher a man’s income, the greater the chance of the couple staying together, said the Saudi sociologist, adding that changes in a couple’s economic circumstances have an enormous effect on marriages.

A large difference in age, he said, was also a risk factor for the marriage.

Another study, however, conducted by Dr. Ebtisam Halawani of King Abdul Aziz University, Jeddah, in which 158 Saudi divorcees were approached, said that “the main causes of breaking away for women from their husbands were ill-treatment and violence.”

Some of the divorcees said that their separation was the result of their husbands’ unwillingness to meet the family’s financial needs.

Some 38 percent of divorcees said that the involvement of their husbands in illicit relationships led to the broken marriages.

Professor Fawzan said that most marriages were not based on mutual familiarity. This, he said, could lead to incompatibility, misunderstanding and separation. The soaring cost of marriages in Saudi Arabia was creating another major social problem, the professor said, adding that many local charitable institutions in cooperation with government agencies were helping couples to marry.

Recently, a major charitable marriage scheme celebrated the wedding of 1,600 couples in Jeddah at a cost of SR16 million. Similar mass weddings were also organized in the recent past in Riyadh and Dammam as well as in other cities in the Kingdom. Similar events are planned for this year.

The study notes that the Islamic courts have been approving 25 to 35 divorce cases every day in the country. Most of the divorces occurred in the first three years of marriage and a majority of divorced women had married under the age of 20, the study said. Riyadh city topped the list of divorces, followed by Jeddah.

“If the current rate of divorce continues, there will be eight million single women in Saudi Arabia by the end of the decade,” the study said.

Two points sister:

The thread is not about women's population.
Please post your references about the population ratios.  I doubt if you can find any.
I don't believe nouha was saying the article was talking about population, she just made an interesting comment.

There are actually a lot of statistics online about gender but can't say how accurate they are.

I thought this was very interesting:

http://www.geohive.com/global/pop_sexratio.php

It has a ratio of number of males per 100 females for every country... in the US it's pretty good 97.. in Saudi though it has 116 which means there are alot more men!! However that might include workers that come into KSA...
Belarus seems to be the worst ratio with only 88 men per 100 women...

Most of the numbers seem to be in the 90's for ratio.. so I think it's awhile to go before it drastically changes to 50... but in thinking about that hadith i've heard scholars say that it isn't about population but about the fact that a day will come when one man has to support 50 women...

Salaam,
the number of women is constantly increasing everyone... i think now its five/six women to one man....

Although the hadeeth says "50" women for each man, but I heard that it doesn't really mean 50 literally, it can mean a huge no., or just a big difference in ratio. Its all about interpretation, I guess, like what jannah mentioned sounds like another way of interpreting that hadeeth, which I never heard before, but makes sense.
but in thinking about that hadith i've heard scholars say that it isn't about population but about the fact that a day will come when one man has to support 50 women...
Do u remember any details by any chance? Were they talking in terms of poverty level? 'cause this is what I get when I read what u have mentioned, meaning there'll be so much poverty (in other terms, increased population) that each man will need to support 50 women.

I just feel like that somehow it is true. Like how the whole world today is getting divided into 2 classes only instead of 3. U either have rich people, who are getting richer and richer day by day, or u have lower class who are getting poorer day by day. Middle class is almost vanishing. People who are in lower middle class, can't make enough, and in the long run see themselves becoming poor, whereas upper middle calss has enough to make it to upper class ultimately.
There is other thing also that I just find so awkward these days that when u are in a gathering, people just talk about money and status ::) I mean, even very good families, or maybe its just me who sees things that way ::) Allahu A'lam.

Wassalam.

Viz-a-viz the thread about Shariah in NWFP, I guess the only positive thing I see in this article is that women DO have rights in Saudia Arabia to dump their hubbies if they're not up to standard.  Of course, I'm not implying that it's good for women to do that, but when you husband has an "illicit affair", then at least the women have the right to take them to court.  When Shriah coms to NWFP, will the wome be able to express this right ?  Once again, I'd love to be corrected.
