Ok, I had gotten a tattoo a year ago, and I have been told that it will be quite a problem if I become muslim. I still haven't, I don't know why, either. I think mainly because of my family. But, back to my question, one person told me that if I do, I would have to get it removed. I've read about people who try doing that, and that it's a very painful, very long and very expensive process that doesn't even guarantee that it will be completely removed. The same person told me that my prayers wouldn't count because of it. Some one else said that they weren't sure about it, but that you have to be clean before you pray and the tattoo is something unnatural on your body. But that was all that person had to say. So, maybe someone here would be able to shed more light on this subject.

Missy,

Forget what the person told you. What they may be thinking of is in the case of a Muslim who knows that getting tattoos is forbidden in Islaam, and does it anyway.

For a person who gets tattoos before becoming Muslim, they are forgiven for all previous sins. For those that believed in a previous Abrahamic faith, they will get two rewards: one for believing in the first message, and the second for believing in the completion of the message.

Some scholars urget getting tattoos removed after becoming Muslim. However, even these scholars realize that with the pain and $ involved, it's not necessary for everyone to do. Same goes for a Muslim who is just beginning to learn about Islaam. A tattoo does not negate one's prayer or anything else.

I've seen brothers with tattoos at the masjid. Many try to hide their tatoos from their pre-Islaamic days. Some don't. I think it's great that they come to the masjid. Either way, no one has the right to tell you your prayers won't be accepted for having a tattoo before even becoming a Muslim, since this isn't in-line with our scholars.

Allahu A'lim/God knows best. Of course, check with a knowledgeable scholar in Islaam if there is one close to your area. Lay-people (like myself) can give you a hundred different opinions, but alhamdulillah (all praise is to God), that we have a standard, and that is the Qur'aan and the sunnah (tradition of the Prophet, and how he lived by the Qur'aan). Not to mention scholars who tackle modern-day issues according to the Q + S, such as this.

And if you already believe in Islaam, don't wait. That's the only reason I logged back on today (not the tattoo thing).  :)

The main requirement for attaining Jannah/Paradise in Islaam is believing in the testimony of faith -- that there is only One God, and that Muhammad is His last messenger - which means believing in all of the previous prophets and their universal message. And it also means they were only men, given a special mission, and not God-like. God is free from any imperfection or requiring any partners. This testimony of faith is not between you and another person, just between you and God. As you begin to learn more, you'll be required to do more, like the prayers. God is the best to help, and He does not turn away from anyone wanting to come closer to Him. So ask Him for help.

May God make it easy for you.

Sister, it isnt a problem and it wont be a problem at all. do not let that hold you back in becoming a Muslim.

Tattoos are haraam in Islaam but it will not make you less of a Muslim if you decide to be one. Know that Islaam wipes out sins that came before it, and indeed Allaah changes them into good deeds, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Except those who repent and believe (in Islamic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds; for those, Allaah will change their sins into good deeds, and Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful” [al-Furqaan 25:70]

It was narrated that ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas said: When Allaah put Islam in my heart, I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: “Give me your right hand so that I may give you my oath of allegiance.” So he held out his hand, but I held my hand back. He said, “What is the matter, O ‘Amr?” I said, “I want to make a condition.” He said, “What is your condition?” I said, “That I be forgiven.” He said, “Do you not know that Islam wipes out whatever came before it, and that hijrah (migration for the sake of Allaah) wipes out whatever came before it, and that Hajj wipes out whatever came before it?” (Narrated by Muslim, 121).

This hadeeth indicates that whoever becomes Muslim is forgiven for all the bad deeds that he may have done before he became a Muslim.

The best way to remove tattoos are by laser but it is expensive. So if you can afford it then well and good and if you cant then its ok as you had it done in the past.

Your prayers will count inshaa'Allah and that person should refrain from speaking without knowledge.
