I read this somewhere and I thought it was absolutely a beautiful way to define hope..

(translation) : "There is a solution to every problem, and the feeling of presence of that solution is Hope"

How do you guys define hope? ...  :)

An Atheist was once asked: Suppose you are the only person on a boat in the middle of an Ocean, you get hit by a storm and your boat sinks. What'll you think then ?!

The Atheist replied: I'll hope that someone will save me

The Atheist was again asked: But NO ONE is there .... who then ?

The Atheist replied: Someone :S

The questioner said: *THAT* someone is God (Allah)

The Atheist gave in !

So to me, Hope is Allah, Allah is hope

This story contrasts Hope in Allah swts mercy and His fear

Harzath Umar R.A  used to say "If any one tells me that All the people are going to hell except one then my hope in Allah swts mercy would make me think Iam the one that is going to paradise
one the other hand
"If any one tells me all the people are going to paradise except one then my fear of Allah swt would make me think Iam the one that is going to hell"

"Umeed ke  kiranon siwa ayr kuch nahin hain yahan
Is andehere ghar mein roshni ka yahi intezaam hai"

"Except for the rays of hope ,there isnt much around here
It is the only means of lighting up this dark house"

Wa'alaikum Assalam wa rahmatullah,
I read this somewhere and I thought it was absolutely a beautiful way to define hope..

How do you guys define hope? ...
I like reading quotable quotes, and the ones I like very much, I write them down in my diary. Here is something to share:

"Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out." -- Vaclav Havel.

"Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards." -- Unknown

"Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get." -- Dave Gardner

"Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want, but the realization of how much you already have." (Author Unknown).

"The little body is, I do believe, the greatest weight I have on my conscience, for I realize today that it is a mortal sin to violate the great laws of nature. We should not hurry, we should not be impatient, but we should confidently obey the eternal rhythm."
(from Zorba the Greek, by Nikos Kazantzakis)

"Improving our own attitudes and our own state of mind takes time. Haste and impatience can only defeat our purposes."

"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectivness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves, too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. The whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets: 'Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.'"

(from W.H. Murray, "The Scottish Himalayan Expedition")

"They say that pain is inevitable but suffering is optional. If I learn to accept that pain is part of life, I will be better able to endure the difficult times and then move on, leaving the pain behind me."

On Living With A Full Heart

When one is too hurt one cannot see others' pain, is too blind with one's own.
When one has many weights to lift, one cannot enjoy life.
When one has many expectations, one cannot be patient with others.
When one has fear, one cannot enjoy life.
When one does not give, one is making the heart lonely.
When one does not take, one is making the heart feel inferior
When one does not hope, one is shutting oneself into a tight closet.
But when one does not love, one is killing one's self.

          Symptoms of Inner Peace

Be on the lookout for symptoms of inner peace. The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to inner peace and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. This could pose a serious threat to what has, up to now, been a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world.

Some signs and symptoms of inner peace:

A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences.

An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.

A loss of interest in judging other people.

A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.

A loss of interest in conflict.

A loss of the ability to worry. (This is a very serious symptom).

Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation.

Contented feelings of connectedness with others and nature.

Frequent attacks of smiling.

An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.

An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it.
The Rules for Being Human

1. You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours for the entire period this time around.

2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a fulltime informal school called life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and stupid.

3. There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial and error, experimentation. The "failed" experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately "works."

4. A lesson is repeated until learned. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can go on to the next lesson.

5. Learning lessons does not end. There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. If you are alive there are lessons to be learned.

6. "There" is no better than "here." When your "there" has become a "here" you will simply obtain another "there" that will again look better than "here."

7. Others are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself.

8. What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.

9. Your answers lie inside you. The answer to life's questions lie inside you. All you need to do is look, listen, and trust.

10. This will often be forgotten, only to be remembered again.

    How A Child Learns
If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn.
If a child lives with hostility, she learns to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy.
If a child lives with shame, she learns to feel guilty.
If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient.
If a child lives with encouragement, she learns confidence.
If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate.
If a child lives with fairness, she learns justice.
If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith.
If a child lives with approval, she learns to like herself.
If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to find love in the world.

Hope...?

A huuuge but fragile bubble inside which all earthly restrictions are suspended and you can do what you want, like a private dream. It is the home of your heart. It bursts when there is no tomorrow.

Hope's Enigma

Leaves fall softly on the lake
Serenity ripples in their wake.
One ripple, one beat upon my heart
As laughter echoes in the dark.
While children cry and mothers soothe
And light reveals the morning's truth.
As hope is cloaked in darkness' sorrow,
So do I await tomorrow.

There was a time when I would do little else in my free time but read poetry. This thread made me remember a poem I used to like about hope.

Hope is the thing with feathers
by Emily Dickinson

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me
