A 20-year-old New Jersey man drowned in Lake George. Police said Christopher Beck and a group of friends was in town camping this weekend. At this point police said the drowning looks accidental.

They said Beck was swimming with five friends from Unkas Island to a nearby island in the narrows on Lake George.

Scott Baldwin of the New York State Police said, "In the process of doing so, one of the swimmers wasn't able to continue his journey, he called for help, his friends responded, he went under, and that was the last that was seen of him.."

Authorities said they believe the drowning was accidental.

He was a trusted adviser, a role model, a good student, a generous host and a devout Muslim.

That's how friends and family described Wasseem Beck , 21, who drowned Sunday in Lake George, N.Y., as he attempted to swim from one island to another about 50 yards away.

Beck, whose first name means "handsome" in Arabic, was also known as Christopher, the name he chose when he became an American citizen in 1989. He was born in Syria.

"There's not one person I can think of who didn't like him," said friend Fawad Kahn , 19. "He was the person we would all confide in. He was so good at listening and giving advice."

This weekend, Beck camped and fished with five friends at Lake George. They arrived on Saturday morning and planned to leave Monday.

On Sunday, the sun peeked out through the clouds. Around 5 p.m., Beck and another friend decided to swim from Uncas Island to nearby Brush Island, New York State Police said.

After his friend made it to the island, Beck started swimming across. He was halfway there when he called out for help.

Friends, including the one who had swum to the other island, rushed to get to Beck.

"He just kept going down," said Zafar Toor , 24, who was on the camping trip. "It was just too deep."

The water is 20 feet deep at that spot and was 62 degrees at the surface, said Senior Investigator Thomas Aiken of the New York State Police.

A forest ranger called the Emergency Medical Squad, and rescuers pulled Beck from the water, said Aiken.

Friends and family said Beck was a capable swimmer.

He was pronounced dead at 6:41 p.m. at Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls, N.Y.

On Monday, friends gathered at the home on Manner Avenue where Beck lived with his parents, Michael and Nadia, and four siblings. They sat on the porch and shared memories.

Kahn recalled a time when Beck drove a complete stranger from Paterson to Philadelphia, simply because the person needed a ride. When friends visited, Beck cooked meals for them.

"He went out of his way to help everyone," said Kahn.

Beck took business classes at William Paterson University and worked at AT&T Wireless in Paramus.

He was deeply religious. He attended the Darul Islah mosque in Teaneck and participated in its youth group.

"As long as everybody was taken care of, he was happy," said Omar Jouejati , 15. "I looked up to him very much."

Beck's father, Michael, said he could feel something was wrong when he was unable to reach his son by cell phone on Sunday afternoon.

"You can feel something, because he is part of me, that's why," he said.

Last week, Beck proudly watched as his brother, Daniel, graduated from Garfield High School.

"He came and gave me a big hug and I picked him up," recalled Daniel. "I'm glad he was there to see that."
