From the hard-to-cook Paki dishes...I gotta say, my favorite is Chicken Biryani.  (Haleem is okay...You're pushing it at Nihari)

Yum Yum...student biryani from that bus depot in Karachi.  When I was 12, my Mamoon (Mom's bro, who is very young) dressed me up as a boy, because he insists that it just isn't the same if you eat it at home.  So basically, you have to eat it with all the Rickshaw drivers, in a fly infested, no-fan, FILTHY bus depot on a plate that looks like it hasn't been washed with soap in years.  (Actually, we took our own utensils)....

Honestly, maybe my memory is locked because the experience was so much fun, but I don't think I have ever eaten a nicer tasting biryani in my life.  (Mamoon got into a lot of trouble after my mom found out.  Never been back, since.)

But other than that...I like foods that are satisfying.  Like potatoes.  YUM.  Or like a fresh bowl of fruit.  YUMMIER.  Or like peanut butter.  Or grilled cheese sandwiches with REAL butter (none of that fake stuff for me).  Or like seafood.  Sheesh how can you ask me about A favorite food??!!! That's like...like...not possible.   :-X

But, seriously speaking...whenever I see fruit...I get really happy.  I am so surprised at how unique, beautiful, and satisfying all the different fruits can be.  SubhanAllah.

The best fruits, by far....are in West Africa.

Love the smoothies.

Not too big a fan of sweet things...but I love truffles.  All kinds of truffles.  Also love Kheer.  And Burfi.  And Pateesa.  And my italian aunt makes this wicked coffee and chocolate cake. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH cheesecake!!!

Okay, I'll never quit.

Sorry, one more thing...bro Faisal...

Karrella...yeah, you have to marinate it in salt for like a day, otherwise it tastes.... ::)

Also, there's a myth about those things.  In our family, it's tradition to make the bride cook that stuff after like a year to her marriage.

Apparently if someone cooks it and it tastes  ::) , then she is like a bitter person, or something like that.

And if it tastes good, then, well, she's passed the ultimate test.

Tastes good when my grandmother makes it.  Otherwise, it tastes..horrid.  Ain't no one making me eat that stuff, unless she makes it.

Ok are you all ready for this?
If this doesn't make me sound like an American hick  ;D
I don't know what will.

Fried chicken, mash potatoes with gravy, corn on the cob and
homemade biscuts.

Ice teas and for desert either cheese cake or a bread pudding with cinnimon sauce.

Then a 10 mile jog to wear off the calories   :P

Best lunch?  A BLT sandwich (turkey bacon of course) and tomatoe soup
                               :-/      yummy      :-/

Candy? Almond joy candy bar

Ok, need to get off the pc, I'm hungry  ;)

My all-time favourite dish is rice with black chickpeas. That's a very desi dish, so maybe not many of u will know what that is. But like some other people, that has to be cooked by my mom for me to enjoy it.
Other than that, these days I have become a big fan of hummus, and I have decided that I'll learn to make one on my own InshaAllah. There is this Arab friend of mine who jokes with me very often on this hummus thing and tells me to get married to an Arab sister, like kill 2 birds with one stone  :). But, can't forget the shawarma too.................ummmm..........its watering my mouth now  :P

[quote]Yum Yum...student biryani from that bus depot in Karachi. That student biryani in Karachi is supposed to be the best biryani made anywhere by anyone. They don't sell it in bus depot anymore. They have constructed a building there now, a 3 storey building. Also, the owners make a lot of money, I heard like close to 100,000 Rs.  a day, so yearly business totals to crores. Allahu A'lam. People in Karachi cite this student biryani wala for success in business now.

hang on - what do you mean karella isn't supposed to be bitter?? I have spent the last 7 years customising my taste buds and now I *like* bitter karella. And now you peeps come along and say it shouldn't be bitter???

I am currently trying to train my taste buds to like salty lassi instead of sweet. To me it tastes like sea water mixed with yoghurt.. which I suppose it is in a sense.

Okay - fave foods
If I could choose anything in the world it would probably always be some sort of a fry up - chips (fries) with cheeseburger, or fried eggs, or turkey sausage etc etc..
Favourite desi food is Pilau - real dark stuff with lamb and a nice spicy yoghurt chutney.
Favourite drinks - coke, mango milkshake (made with fresh Pak. mangoes)

I don't really have a favourite dessert - I am not a sweet tooth.
However I have to ask - what is with Lindt chocolate??? Is it really hard to get/expensive in the States or why the big fuss over it? Here you can get it in any supermarket in 57 varieties and not very expensive compared to any other chocolate. It doesn't even taste that great.

All I have to say is that you haven't tasted Cadbury's yet.  8)

Sis Eleanor,

It is supposed to be bitter...but when cooked right, it tastes hmm...not bitter?

lol.

As for Lindt chocolate.....puhlease please children..do not DISS SWISS CHOCOLATE.

I am in Geneva right now...and seriously, Lindt is like so commercialized, and not as good as REAL SWISS CHOCOLATE.

Maybe Dawn can second this one?  heh.

I didn't expect there to be such an uproar about Lindt being my favorite chocolate.   :D  Why don't you guys tell me then what should be my favorite chocolate? ???  I've had Tobbler before but it isn't all that.  And Cadbury (its not swiss though) isn't bad, but it can't compare to Lindt's white chocolate or pistachio flavored ones.  As for the claim that maybe its hard for me to get quality chocolate out here, im well connected (Ralph's, Von's Arab stores, etc).  :)  At least I don't have to go all the way out to Geneva to get mine. ;)

I don't think I know what Karella is but why does that name sound familiar?  The strangest food I have had was beef tongue and cow brains (both of them once.)   :o  And believe me, once was more then enough.

Karella filled with Qeema(ground beef) is one of my favourite too. Karella is supposed to be bitter but you can reduce the bitterness by soaking it in salt water for hour or so or by adding Imli(tamrind).
Bhaloo you can find Karella at any Pakistani/Indian store. It is green in color and is in shape sort of like squash. may be some body can post its name in English(I 'll ask my sister's mother-in-law about what it is called in English later) But I ahvent seen it at any regular grocery store. It is supposed to be good for cholestrol. I remember when I was in college one of the girls used to drink it juice first thing in the morning to get rid of pimples and to have smooth skin! I donp know if it is a myth or fact :)

I like everything(Pakistani/Middle Eastern/American/Chinese/Italian) which is cooked nicely :)  But I love all desserts specially the one with chocolate :) Has anyone tried Rabri (Yum Yum).

okay I would actually have spelt it "carayla" and it is called "bitter root" in english - I  looked it up all those years ago  ::) It's a green knobbly vegetable...

Didn't mean to diss Lindt chocolate - it's just that here it's run of the mill chocolate - nothing special. If you like it fine. I like Cadbury's and that's run of the mill where I come from.

Bitter root!

I knew it was bitter something...I was just about to do a googly woogly.  (And I like sis eleanor's spelling better too....but this phonetic thing is so relative anyway)

Bro bhaloo...honestly, I would offer to ship you some of the real stuff, but it would probably melt since it's like THIRTY FIVE DEGREES, and there is NO AIR CONDITIONING in my apartment (since it's like against the law or something).

Ok, that is a tuffy to pick just one favorite food!!!  I could probably name more like my favorite food out of each culture's foods I eat  then to just pick one single thing!!!

For main dishes,
I just like it all from Japanese to Korean to American to Indian to Arabic to French to Italian.... I could go on and on and name all the kinds of foods I like cuz I'd never stop!!!

And then there are sweets...  yummmm..
flan--I make killer flan
french pastries--the best in the world...  :)
and ice cream...yummm

and I just looooove mixed fresh fruit drinks  :)

I now know why I exercise so much.... its so I can eat and eat and not have to worry about it!!

Really, I just don't understand why/how people can diet when it would just be easier to workout a whole bunch and then be able to eat anything they want???!!!  That is a mystery I'll never be able to solve!!!

me?  eat less?  NO!!! I'd rather eat that cheeseburger--wait, make it a double cheeseburger (halal or course) with fries and a milkshake and then have to jog for over an hour and do weightlifing (gotta build those muscles so they burn all that fat) than to go without yummy foods!!  Now of course, this doesn't mean I don't eat healthy also.  Its not burgers and cakes everyday!!!

the way some people go on about Lindt made me think that it is a luxury product in the US, but apparently not?

as far as I know Lindt is Lindt. Maybe because it is also manufactured here is why it is so easy to come by.
I do know that the most bought easter bunnies and santa clauses are from Lindt - followed closely by Milka. And they do savage advertising. Pretending like Mr.Lindt puts the little red sash with a bell personally on each bunny/Santa.

What a cool topic,

I thought i was the only one that liked Karella  :o best way to get rid of the bitter taste is to scrape it and rather than salt water rub lots of salt into it the night b4 u cook it......

My favourite snack type food has got to be Channa Chaat or pani puri from Tariq road Karachi.. :P (drool,  drool) this is sooo good, but it has to be the imli(um tamarind i think) one not yoghurt. When i go for holidays i go at least once a week for this.
My fave food food is also Haleem with loads of lemon and corriander on it
Fave Pudding Faluda - Again best one is in pakistan but this time it has to be Lahore........

And as for chocolate, i don't know what kind of chocolate u guys get in America, but over here there are soooo many to choose from some of my favourites
Farrero Roche
Guillyan - this is belgian style shells with truffle in them Yummmmy
Cote d'or -   :o soooooo goooood
Cadbury's Marble is quite good tooo
oh and we have Thornton's chocolates here in the uk these are wonderful.....................
I have to go i am supposed to be trying to reduce my chocolate intake  ::)

you know I tried pani puri for the first time a few days ago. It was the tamarind one. It was okay, but i couldn't drink the stuff. Are you supposed to like dip your pani puri then take a slurp of the stuff or was that a modified version that we did here? The people I was with drank a whole cupful of that tamarind mixture, chutney. I couldn't do it though. That's another thing to train my taste buds to I suppose.

To the chocolate issue - bhaloo, I don't know what the fuss is about Swiss/Belgian chocolate either. Give me a bar of Cadbury's dairy milk anyday and I'll be happy  ;D Team it with a  [] and a bag of Tayto cheese and onion and I'm a VERY happy camper  8)

My all time favorite desi dish is Chicken biriyani. I have heard about that Student biriyani in Karachi but have never had any, maybe next time inshaAllah.

Fav. drink is mango shake, yummmmm. When I was in Paki everyday for dinner I had a mango shake, sooooooo good, it was just heavenly. ;D

For choclates just looovee Ferrero Rocher.

About Karela, I dont like just karela but it tastes reallly good with keema. My mother in law makes killer karella and keema, really good mashaAllah.

Also love shawerma's but the ones in Saudia Arabia. The Paki ones just don't taste the same(actually, not even close to it ;D)

It's hard picking out a favorite food.  How about, what food do you absolutely hate and woould never eat it if you were paid to?

For me, it's eggplant in all it's forms and various methods of preparation.
Yuck!   :(   :-[

Ahh....I'm not a big fan of food believe it or not  :( I always thought of it as my enemy ( I don't have a high metabolism  :P ) I always tell everyone if only there was a pill called "breakfast", "lunch", & "dinner" I'd be so happy. Kinda like what astronauts use.  :D

Sometimes though I have a soft spot for:

Italian food, Indian food, Syrian food, hmmmmm? What else? Ahh yes.......
Chocolate -- MMmmmmmmm

See that's why I hate food because...
Good food + increased intake = A BIG FAT ME!  :P

Mmmmmm...chicken or mom would say kitchen (she could never get it).  I'm a kichen freak myself.  I mean chicken.  Chicken freak.  But if you want to win my heart, give me chocolate cake...no forsting unless it's semi sweet.
And desserts-any kind of desserts.  Love desserts.  If it was up to me...I'd make desserts for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Once in a while, a steak (well done) from a grill...superb-but it's gotta be done right. Ohhhhh...and turkey.  Love turkey.  And salad.  Cherries.  Love cherries.  Love all fruits and vegetables.  Still love spinach cooked or raw and eggplant.  Mmmmmm....

Ok.  So I love it all except for those that are haram, of course.  But remember those days when we were younger and used to eat candy without finding if they were halal or not....like Skittles.  Now I can't stand them since after I found that they were haram.  That's a good thing.

Just give me food.  I'll love you forever.  Not into flowers or anything like that. (wonder if that was appropriate?)

Ma-asalaama....
