I'd like some ideas on honeymoons. :) My husband and I never had one. Not even for the second anniversery. He left for 6 months five days after we married. :'( He left again in jan and is not due home till the end of the year and I am trying to plan a surprize honeymoon. Doesn't have to be in the US. But could be. He has been all over the world and I once asked him if he could show me any place he had been to, what one would he like to show me the most. He replied Greece. Anyone know what Greece is like in January? What there is to see? Other recommendations of other countries? I always thought Egypt would be cool. I know he also liked Singapore a lot. We are quiet, outdoorsey and nature and history loving type folks. Oceans or mountains are fine. |

Have you ever been there or know someone who has? What can you tell me about them? For any others sharing advice we love to learn about culture, history, going to museums and zoos and such. All advice and suggestion/ideas are truly appreciated. I want to have this planned and payed for before he gets home and I want it to be very special. Maybe 2 to 3 weeks, 4 weeks tops (have to get back to the critters ::) ). Can be one or two places or even several. |

[wlm] How about mauritius, the maldives or some resorts on malaysia? Those places might have better accomodations for muslims and of course most importantly sisters only swimming places!! ;D Or what about a cruise? A sister I know said they enjoyed it alot because you got to stop at all these different places and visit them. |

[slm] How about Cordoba in spain? If your into Architecture, some of the most beautiful mosques are there... a warning tho, stay away from madrid, barcelona et al, because in summer its like the whole of the british population take them and their jelly bellys there -- fat people peeling red in the sun... ewww Now I got that out of my system... how about the UAE? Masses of culture and tribal ways and stuff :) If you like capital cities, come to London, I'll put you up for your stay... Im sure my parents would mind lol. But there are alot of plays and the houses of parliament and big ben and horse rides (at debilitating prices) through hyde park.... If you want closer to home, how about Colorado, or Montana? I always wanted to go there.... take a western style trek across the big sky country.... <sigh> ok, ok, I'm done. :-* ma asalaamah and take care |

[slm] ;-) Turkey has some of the grandest mosques, and best of all you can pray in them (unlike the cordoba mosque in spain). The museums in Turkey are full of very historic Islamic artifacts and items once owned by famous Muslim personalities and original copies of some great Islamic texts. Other than that you can find rich cultural and spiritual places in eastern turkey. Check out [url]http://www.islamicity.com/travel[/url]. See the tours of Turkey and Spain. You can get an idea of what places to visit there even if you don't go with teh Islamicity tour. I think the tour of spain also includes morocco. You can easily find many websites with information on what places to visit in turkey, spain and morocco. The best would be to do Spain, Turkey and Morocco. If you have never been to the haramein I would recommend you visit Makkah and Medina before anything else. Wherever you choose to go, we will expect a detailed account of your trip as many of us are unable to go on such a trip ourselves. |

[quote]We planned on postponing our honeymoon till Hajj, we will do Hajj together...And go alittle early, before the crowd comes InshaAllah...[/quote] i mean, i wouldn't mind not going for a honeymoon if i could just save the $ and do the Hajj instead. anyway, that aside, i would still luv to give some ideas 8) [quote]I always thought Egypt would be cool.[/quote] [i]You bet it is!! i luv Egypt. wouldn't mind going there again and again ;) And the ppl there are very friendly[/i] [quote]I know he also liked Singapore a lot.[/quote] [i]Well, you are welcome anytime. My husband is closer to you than me :'( (pout) Hey where is the pouting smiley??? My husband has been to Singapore three times. I wanted to fly out to visit him this last time but with security we are not allowed to know dates (and sometimes even places) in advance. And I don't dare buy a ticket on a rumor as the airlines have no refunds now a days. I have not seen him in 5 months :'( :( :'( I am planning this Honeymoon for January'ish. Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Spain and Morocco sound wonderful. I wonder if 4 or 5 days in each place would be enough ( I don't dare leave my new grandbaby to long since babies grow and change so much and so fast) But 25 days would be good. I have to wait till the end of the year as my busy time with my business is Sept through Dec. Can you all tell me of the weather of those places in January??? As for Makkah is that the same Makkah that in the US spell Mecca? If so I don't think we could go. #1) I heard you can only get a visa if you are visiting family or are working or for the pilgrimage. But not for just tourist. 2) I also heard non Muslims are not allowed in that town. My husband is not Muslim. He is agnostic. He has no beliefs. I'll ask Sal or lady about that as they are from SA. Keep the ideas coming please. Oh and what are these places like in January? |

[slm] Yes, its the same Makkah...:) Its true, you have to be Muslim to enter the cities. Its getting harder and harder to get visas - the only ways non Saudis can enter is either obtaining a business visa (which has to be sponsored) or an Umrah visa (which also has to be sponsored, I think). You could go with a group, but your husband wont be able to accompany you, I'm afraid. Am I right, Sal? This info is the last I heard, I might be out of date :-* Insha allaah, Ill be going to Saudi this summer.... please pray i do! miss it like mad... Dunno abt the others, but the UAE, should be having its mildest weather in January, breezy but no snow (obviously!) or anything like that... I should imagine itll be snowing in colorado tho.... ma asalaamah and take care |

[slm] One more thing.... Don't do HAJJ if you are thinking of doing a 2-in-1 Hajj+Honeymoon thing... That's just WRONG. Go on your honeymoon to the next city if money is an issue...but do Hajj solely for the purpose of fulfilling that Fardh act, inshaAllah. (I talk too much...seriously, that's it, I promise) Wasalaam. |

[slm] ;-) You are very clever. For years guys have been fulfilling the wife's romantic requirement of a honeymoon by calling going on a Hajj a honeymoon! Obviously you can't do much honey-mooning on a hajj! You just take part in a spiritual experience togather and get to avoid being in a situation where you are expected to be at your most romantic self. For many guys its nearly impossible to satisfy the romantic notions of a honeymoon that many girls have. The best way out rather than disappointing your wife is to do something where you can''t be romantic so that she gives you the benefit of the doubt. Kind of like better to remain silent and appear an idiot than open your mouth and remove all doubts. |

[slm] Well we choose Swat for our honeymoon, it's a fascinating place. If someone is wondering where it is then it's in NWFP province of Pakistan. I had been there couple of times but still wanted to see it again, so we decided to spend our honeymoon there. (And still want to go again if I had chance to have another honeymoon .....;)) Everything over there is so natural and unpolluted that you feel like entirely in different world. If you compare it with metropolitan areas of Pakistan then you don't feel like it's part of Pakistan because it's free of dust, smoke and noise pollution. It's also known for it's fruits, mountains, water falls and springs. The water of water falls and river is too cold to bear it for long even in summer. So be carefull if you intended to use the water for wudhu or something like that. Another interesting thing over there is a White Palace Hotel, that's actually palace of the ex-swat ruler which is turned in to hotel now. You can hire the room there which was master bedroom of the ruler and have taste of royal living. There are also some historicals places to visit like ancient mosques, statues of Budha etc Following is the url for information and some pictures of the valley: http://www.swatvalley.com/gallery/ |

Assalaamu alaikum, A timely thread...:) My preferences are (1) good hotels (2) minimal road travel (3) natural beauty at walking distance (i.e. scenery should be felt not driven through!) (4) peacefulness (no crowds please!) (5) historical places are not important for this type of visit (6) slow paced and not a hectic schedule. Any location that fits that bill and the bill won't make me bankrupt :) Going outside the country is not an option right now as I am seriously time strapped. Thanks for the brief on Swat, Faisal. I haven't been there but have heard it is beautiful. However, one can fly to Saidu Shareef, but there has to be significant driving to Kalam and Malam Jabba, the two prime locations in Swat. Any tips on public transportation? Tours? Hotels in these places? Was it tiring/hectic? Unpolluted? Actually I heard the opposite from some ppl as well, but I guess they were comparing it to swat of 20 years back. The other really interesting place in Pakistan is Skardu (often called Heaven on Earth?). Anyone been there? What is it like? I heard that the flight into Skardu is awesome, with view of the Himalayan mountains. Hmm... gotta make a decision fast...! Tips are welcome. Wasalaam. |

[slm] Skardu's a bit....COLD. Never heard of the heaven on Earth thing about that place. As a family we toured it up to the Khunjra Pass (border of China) once. Some nice places along that route. Beshaam, Gilgit, Hunza, Gulmit.... It's nicer than the Swat route...that's my unofficial, and very biased opinion. (Caught a stomach bug on the Swat route.) Usually the PTDC hotels are fairly comfortable...and fairly decently priced too. Good luck! |

wa alaikum us-salaam, Cold? hmm, at this time of the year the temps are lower/mid 20s for highs and upper single digits for lows (as reported on the web). I don't think that is COLD. The Shangri-La hotel there usually advertise Skardu as Heaven on Earth (clever marketing I guess). Driving up the Karakoram highway would be awesome, but it would take two days of travel to reach Skardu, which I cannot afford. There seems to be nice attractions close to Skardu (deep blue lakes, lush green plains, towering mountains, raging rivers, etc). Yeah, I have heard the PTDC hotels are decent and fairly priced. Aarrgh, I guess we will have to toss a coin! |

Spend some time with ur wife there on the lake, it'll be worth it InshaAllah. Its kinda lovers' point ;) I heard story of shehzada (Prince) saif and was laughing like crazy........ Wassalam. |

[slm] Saef-ul-malook? But that is sometimes not a good place to visit when u r with your family. I call it a wild spot rather coz last time we went there (a year back) the road from Naraan to the Lake didn't seem to exist even due to heavy land sliding and we had to hike/moutain climb all the way. You dont wanna know how tiring and wild the experience was! oh and that 3 hour horse riding at the Lake and the night stay at forest dept. hut (guys only thingies) But Asim Bhai i think the best place would be "Shugraan", its in the mid-way to "kaghaan" from "balakot" and hotel "Pine Park" is the best place to stay, highly recommended. Rest of the places i know of are too wild for couples, i mean places like seri, paA <= no, thats not a dish ! dunna <= spelt as done-A sharraan - - not recommended - - go for Shugraan wassalam Asim Zafar :) |

Assalaamu alaikum, I have been to the Kaghan valley. As Asim Z mentioned, the drive into Naran and up to the lake can be a bit scary for some. Shogran is beautiful (and the entire kaghan valley is awesome ), but again the drive can be a bit scary and it is about 6-7 hours from Islamabad. I am sure tours by PTDC and others operate but I am kinda unsure about such arrangements. Anyone has any experience with them? Wasalaam. btw before someone mention the galiyaats (murree, nathiagali, bhurban, etc), those are down on my list since I have been there many times and they are crowded. |

[slm] Well that's right PTDC hotels are very good and economical. I bought 10 days package from Punjab Tourism and they arrange for you all hotel booking, transportation and schedulling of travelling within the area. You can give your inputs if you want different hotels or want to reschedule your travelling. But usually their scheduling is the best and very well planned so you have enough time to visit all the places and spend enough time over there. Brother Bulwark of Islam yes Marghazar Palace is also called White Palace. |

Waliakum assalam, The drive to shugran is scary!!! i had my eyes closed all the way, our driver was driving like it was nooooooo big deal!!! But i totally thought the drive was not worth it, i expected more.. There was just one hotel and like the bazaar was empty.. on top of that my cousin and I thought there was something shady going on in the hotel!!! But alhamdullilah, it was very spiritually awakening.. **But kalaam is beautiful!!! My fav part was the water of the lake being super cold and like the venders putting drinks in the shallow part of the water and sitting on the straw chairs :)!!!! but this was when we were really young.. things prolly have changed now!! ** I have always wanted to go to kaghan!!! insha'Allah next time when we visit pak :-X |

[slm] Murree? no way. I wont go there with friends even, not only its crowded but lots of stupidity going on all around. Try "thundyanee" it'll be good and its not that far as well (near Murree), but accomodation might be a problem there! Asim Bhai, toss that coin :) [slm] Asim Zafar. |
