Ali Tamimi Aressted?

I don't know what to make of the following story. I have not heard about it from any Muslim organization yet. Not eve Cair.

For the entire story go to:

http://www.antiwar.com/royer.html

One name that appears throughout these stories is a man named Ali Al-Timimi, a Islamic scholar who held lectures in northern Virginia, which Royer attended. The Post-Dispatch reported that Al-Timimi had suggested " that the men travel abroad to Muslim countries after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001." This advice stemmed from his worry that a "war on Muslims" would begin after 9/11 and a Muslim male would best avoid America altogether. Royer heeded his advice; temporarily moving to Bosnia - where, in the 1990s, he had fought in the Bosnian army against Slobodan Milosevic.

The FBI believed that these trips were meant to send the men to train as terrorists in foreign lands. Royer maintains that he spent the seven months in Bosnia aiding refugees. The other men investigated also denied claims of "jihad training."

As mentioned, the FBI claims that the impetus for Royer's arrest was his supposed ties to a terrorist group in 2000 – Lashkar-E-Taiba – itself declared "terrorist" in December 2001. The Post Dispatch described Royer's past affiliation:

[Royer] went to Pakistan and helped write press releases and set up a worldwide e-mail list for Lashakar-E-Taiba in 2000. . . . the group's leaders assured him they had no ties to Osama bin Laden or al-Qaida. He said he gave al-Hamdi and Kwon a contact number for Lashkar-E-Taiba leaders when they traveled to Pakistan.

The full story has yet to surface, so please stay tuned to Antiwar.com for updated reports.

Update: 6:30 EDT, June 27, 2003

The L.A. Times reports that 11 suspects have now been arrested. The charges have also become more severe:

The suspects were described as being part of a Virginia-based cell of a militant Muslim organization called Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is on the State Department's list of terrorist organizations and is characterized as strongly anti-U.S.

Although this Kashmiri group has no connections to al-Qaeda, the FBI believes they are aiding extremist organizations:

US officials believe that Lashkar-e-Taiba has no official ties to such global terrorist organizations as Al Qaeda, but that it may be expanding its portfolio to help in Muslim conflicts elsewhere in the world, in part through recruiting, plotting and fund-raising in the United States.

Assistant. Atty. Gen. Christopher Wray claims that the meetings which Royer was a part of - lectures held by Al-Timimi and the paintball gatherings pre-9/11 - are instances of these men "meet[ing] in the shadows of our nation's capital to prepare for violent jihad."

This writer spoke to an unnamed friend of Mr. Royer who said that when Mr. Royer visited Pakistan in 2000, Lashakar-I-Taiba was not considered a terrorist organization and further, that this was his last contact with the organization.

panjul i don't think either of those articles mentions ali tamimi arrested.. they just talk about how the men they did arrest ie royer attended his halaqas..

you know if you read those articles very closely and get past the words terrorist, extremist, militant (used a number of times) there's not much being said except for accusations...

for example it's interesting they say this, " US officials believe that Lashkar-e-Taiba has no official ties to such global terrorist organizations as Al Qaeda, but that it may be expanding its portfolio to help in Muslim conflicts elsewhere in the world, in part through recruiting, plotting and fund-raising in the United States. "

now if the group was a relief organization how would this be different? they would still be recruiting 'plotting' and fund raising in the US.  seems like these stories have a common yellow journalism thread...  stuff like "the FBI believes..." "is believed to..."  'they denied..." "he maintained..." "the FBI claims..." "U.S. officials believe..." where and when will we get the evidence.. or is it that there never was any.. sounds familiar eh

Assalamo elikuim

I dont know if Ali Tamimi has been arrested or not but right now they showed on MSNBC about this and said that spiritual leader of those who have been arrested, Ali Tamimi gave a lecture about Muslim men going to different countries etc. They also mentioned that Ali Tamini himself have denied that he said anything about killing etc.
Yesterday they have arrested a man from one of the suburb of Philly. From what they showed on the news it looked like he was a regular guy working and living with his family. And they interviewed his neighbours, one lady said that he didnt look like a terrorist and was always nice to her even though she had a USA flag on her door. ANother lady said something like that since she was from India he and the family werent very friendly to them now it explains why.

May Allah swt have mercy on Muslims.

May Allah safeguard and protect them in these hard times. Ismail Royer is an *amazing* person Mashaallah, we met him and Mahdi Bray when they came down to do a civic workshop in our community. He is also a prolific writer and activist.
I read this article in the washington post and they didn't mention Ali Tamimi being arrested either.
I am very worried about this...
Make mad duahs peeps:(

Salaams,

I think this is interesting, quite a good number of brothers have been arrested on this point
This advice stemmed from his worry that a "war on Muslims" would begin after 9/11 and a Muslim male would best avoid America altogether. Royer heeded his advice; temporarily moving to Bosnia - where, in the 1990s, he had fought in the Bosnian army against Slobodan Milosevic
At the end of the day it does not matter to what Islamic activities you are doing now or have done in the past, if they want to nail you they will. Its even worse in the develpoing and third world countries where brothers involved in dawah are stripped of all rights and transferred to an undisclosed location thanks to the FBI.

I got this via email...

STATEMENT ON ARREST OF ISMAIL ROYER

On Friday, 27th June, 2003, ATrueWord.com co-founder and editor, Ismail Royer, was
arrested and indicted by the United States government on 41 charges relating to providing aid
to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LET); an organisation that seeks to end Indian occupation of Kashmir.

It should be emphasized that Ismail has not been charged with terrorism, supporting
terrorism or doing anything to endanger the peace and safety of the people of the United
States.  The essence of the charges against him is that he lent "support" to a cause that the
United States government had not endorsed: the cause of Kashmiri independence.

Details of the arrest can be found at:
http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/News/4B06B464A54E647086256D5300153EC7?OpenDocument&Headline=11+Muslim+men+are+indicted+in+conspiracy+to+fight+in+Kashmir.
A brief piece on Ismail's life can be found at:
http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/News/A6B70A1C65325C8F86256D53007553D8?OpenDocument&Headline=Islam+set+direction+of+area+man's+life

The official indictment can be viewed at:
http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/vae/Pressreleases/lashkerindict062703.pdf.

In the coming days, we will be launching a campaign to raise awareness of Ismail's case
and the specific problems in the charges against him.  This campaign will center on the
website, www.freeismail.org.  This case has broad implications for all Americans in that it
will define to what extent Americans are free to support humanitarian and independence
causes around the world.

Some general comments on the 'facts' underpinning the indictment against Ismail:

1) Lashkar-e-Taiba was declared a terrorist organisation by the United States government
in December, 2001. Ismail worked for the organisation in 2000.  At no stage after it was
declared a 'terrorist organisation' by the United States government, did Ismail work with
them;

2) Ismail's involvement with LET was limited to writing press releases and assisting in
building an international media profile for the Kashmiri cause;

3) Lashkar-e-Taiba exists only to secure independence for the people of Kashmir.  It has
never launched terrorist attacks against the United States; is not linked to al-Qaeda;
and has, in fact, articulated a relatively moderate approach to relations between Islam and
the West. Refer to http://iviews.com/articles/Articles.asp?ref=IV0012-1115 for an example
of LET's ideas;

4) Ismail's views on terrorism and political violence are well known to all readers of
ATrueWord.com.  He has been an outspoken critic of such methods and, dating well before
September 11, had written numerous articles articulating a vision of peaceful coexistence
for the West and the Islamic world.  Refer to
http://www.atrueword.com/index.php/article/author/view/4/ for examples of Ismail's
writing;

5) The USDOJ has not charged Ismail with being a member of a 'sleeper cell' or holding
the intent to harm Americans or America.  On the contrary, he is charged with aiding a
group that is seeking independence from a country with whom America is not at war (India).
If this is the standard that is being applied to put Ismail in jail, then why is this same
standard not applied to those who support Tamil independence; those who support the Irish
Catholic cause; and individuals such as Dr Walid Phares, an academic linked to the
Guardians of the Cedar and Lebanese Phalange (refer to
http://www.atrueword.com/index.php/article/articleview/60/1/1/);

On April 2, 2003, Ismail had been called before a grand jury, in Virginia.  He had
refused to cooperate with what he believed was a 'witch hunt'; instead opting to assert this
rights under the Fifth Ammendment.  We are reproducing a transcript of his statement to the
jury below:

"In this matter, I choose to assert my right under the Fifth Amendment of the United
States Constitution not to incriminate myself. I do so despite the fact that I have never
committed or planned to commit, or assisted in the commission of any violence against the
United States, or against any civilians anywhere.

On the contrary, I have consistently condemned such acts as illegal, immoral, and a
threat to the stability and best interests of the United States and humanity. This is a
position I have taken in my numerous articles, statements to the media, as well as in private
forums.

The reason I will not be a party to these proceedings is that they are part of a campaign
of persecution of Americans of the Muslim faith. This campaign is being waged by
politicians and bureaucrats who are trading the US Constitution for personal political gain.

If, by testifying today, I thought that I would be making a America a safer place, or
would be preventing violent acts against America or civilians anywhere, I would be the first
to do so.

However, in this climate of fear, and in a time in which these politicians portray
virtually every practicing Muslim as being involved in a vast, complex conspiracy to harm
America, any word that comes out of my mouth will be portrayed as furtherance of that
non-existent conspiracy.

Therefore, until this nation regains its sanity, and elects an administration that does
not attempt to score political points by fear-mongering against religious minorities, then
I will have nothing further to say to this body, or any other representative of this
administration."

this cause, can contact us at: info@atrueword.com

Lashkar-e-Tayyaba is not, & never was, a terrorist organisation.

it abides by the rule of Jihad, which prohibit attack on civilians. its targets are, & have been, military or para-military occupation forces in Kashmir.

those who have declared it terrorist have ulterior motives.
