Faith brings couples together

DUBAI - Arranging Umrah trips to couples facing marital problems is an effective family reconciliation programme adopted by the Dubai-based Al Ewan For Supporting Brides and Bridegrooms, in cooperation with the Saudi Airlines.

The programme managed to bring back stability to 25 couples who were about to get divorced last year, said Yaseen Hamed Al Amir, Chairman of Al Ewan.

Mr Al Amir said that his organisation was established with the sole purpose of aiding couples to organise their wedding ceremonies and providing them with all possible assistance starting with the invitation cards to other necessities, besides facilitating the performance of Umrah for them by providing them with extra special Umrah packages sponsored by the Saudi Airlines.

"Last year we sent 150 couples on Umrah trips because we believe that convincing the couples facing problems to go together on a pilgrimage trip made available to them at the minimal possible expenses is a means of treatment for all the problems which surface in the day to day life as a result of the pressures which lead many to drift away from the teachings of Islam," Mr Al Amir told Khaleej Times yesterday.

He explained that the objectives of his establishment matched the concepts adopted by the Saudi Airlines which aims not only at carrying passengers to and from the holy land through its vast network. "Our close association with the Saudi Airlines helped us achieve our objectives particularly with the support of its General Manager Dr Khalid Abdullah Bakr," he said.

The financial and moral support of the Saudi Airlines includes the sponsorship of the exhibitions, social, cultural and art functions which promote awareness about marriage from an Islamic perspective and educate the people about various social issues and how to lead a successful marital life.

The Saudi Airlines, Mr  Al Amir added, also finances the Umrah trips and offers special packages at extraordinary rates and sometimes free trips to couples, not necessarily the newly-married. "We are seeking to expand the service with the approval of the Saudi Airlines to allow couples benefiting from the Umrah trips to stop over at any neighbouring country such as Egypt or Lebanon where the airline flies in order to provide some entertainment to them," he said.

The Umrah programme as well as the attempts to solve the couples' problems are not restricted to UAE nationals, but are also available to others who need assistance of that kind, Mr Al Amir observed.

He said that while the Ewan began as a purely social welfare private organisation that extends a helping hand to couples getting married, it is not expanding its functions to cover commercial and trade activities. "We need to secure continuous resources and income to support our activities to educate the society and spread the noble values."

In this context, Mr Al Amir said that the establishment is also seeking cooperation with a number of government and private establishments concerned with the family and social issues. "We met with officials from Dubai courts and discussed with them the possibility of referring the divorce cases to us to try and help the couples to change their minds about destroying their families stability. Our role is to narrow the differences between them by lecturing them and providing them with brochures and print materials on the successful marriage."

Unfortunately the establishment, he added, does not have experienced and specialised family counsellors the reason why it is trying to tie up with one or more private centres for family counselling. "We will have agreements with such centres under which very special rates on the counselling sessions will be given to the couples referred by the Ewan,"Mr  Al Amir disclosed.
