We shouldn't sell off our sovereignty for money

What happens when you have a self-governing state without money to run its affairs?

Some states resort to dealing with narcotics to raise money to finance their activities. Afghanistan has a thriving marijuana industry. So does Burma.

Other countries industrialise, while yet others depend on selling their raw produce. But the worst off are those countries that sell the security and welfare of their own people for money.

I do believe that America and Britain have substantial investments in this country. They contribute greatly to the economy in general and to the Government in the form of taxes.

In addition to this, in ordinary times, they recommend to their citizens that Kenya is a safe country, and therefore, tourists come here in droves. They thus contribute to the multi-billion shilling tourist industry.

If we were to fight the Americans and British, we would suffer. We are a poor country that has to beg the international community to feed, educate, protect and clothe its people.

It is a shame that we cannot do it on our own, yet we are a sovereign country. Even those amongst us who shout loudest are, in one way or the other, sustained by American resources.

We might be wrong to think that a few Kenyans are paid by terrorist groups to cause mayhem just because they hate Americans and the British. Many are doing it to survive and not for any principles. Whereas these individuals earn a few dollars through their retrogressive activities, our country's losses are massive.

But still, we are putting too money into the security services. yet they are unable to arrest a few terrorists. Is there any point in calling them the "intelligence services" any longer?

I think our security forces are making us a laughing stock in the whole world. Billions of shillings are allocated yearly to them, yet, a few terrorist are giving us sleepless nights. We cannot continue this way.

WALTER KIRIMI,
Nairobi.
