Letters   Wednesday, July 2, 2003   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Giving a military base to US suicidal One need not be a rocket scientist to discern the Anglo-Saxon geopolitics of destabilising a sovereign country to warrant protection.   The US desperately needs a military base in East Africa, the ideal location being along the Kenya coast. To accede to their request we must first be made to feel vulnerable.   The norm is for the US to lease a base for eternity. The host countries never regain their territories. For instance, Guantanamo (Cuba), Okinawa (Japan), Puerto Rico (now a satellite), and the Philippines.   I say we remain poor and not succumb to arm twisting by the Pentagon for a base in Kenya.   I am sure Smith Hempstone was pressured by his government not to visit Kenya as that would have shown the travel advisories to be nonsense.   S.
