Ok, I have learned much on this board but am always thinking up questions. ::) If I am understanding right like household knick knacs are not allowed of like living things, animals, etc. I see from one post that a sis made a childs outfit with butterflies and jannah has butterflies on her web home page (which by the way are sooooo cool, I have butterflies real ones in my yard all the time) What is and is not allowed and why? Like butterflies vs horses pictures vs home furnishings etc? Also I was thinking of trying to make the sisters on here something an I have 50 or more fabrics available to me, stars, butterflies, solid colors and all kinds of activities and animals. What is allowed? As for clothing and household too what is allowed? |

[slm] sister, first of all we are not qualified to issue fatwas. this is a difficult one! it is tough because the answer is simple, but we somehow do not put it in practice. In fact, because of widespread use, even ulema have started disagreeing, although the AHadeeth are clear. use of pictures of animals or humans is forbidden. an exception can be made for educational purposes, but for household items, or clothes, the prohibition stands. i do not recall the exact words of the Hadith, but i hope someone here will be able to quote the actual Hadith: the prophet (pbuh) is reported to have said that whoever draws the picture of a living being (ie.; from the animal kingdom, vegetable kingdom is excluded), will be asked to put life in that picture, (& since he will not be able to do so, he will be sent to hell) some people say that the prohibition is for statues, not two dimensional pictures, but that is incorrect. again there is a Hadith. i can give only what i recall: a piece of cloth with pictures of animals on it was sent to the prophet's (pbuh) house, & Ayesha (ra) made pillow covers out of it. When the prophet (pbuh) came, he showed signs of displeasure. Ayesha (ra) asked the reason for it, & was told that angels (of mercy) do not enter a house which has such pictures (of animals or humans). if i remember correctly, that piece of cloth was allowed to be used as a doormat. all the AHadeeth that i have quoted here need to be checked for actual content. so i will keep searching, & i urge the learned ones who visit here to give us the actual AHadeeth. wallahu a'alam may Allah (swt) make us tread the true path, without fear of anyone other than HIM. aameen |

[slm] 1679. `Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) visited me after returning from a journey, and I had a shelf with a thin cloth curtain hanging over it and on which there were portraits. When he saw it, the colour of his face changed (because of anger) and he said, "O `Aishah! the most grievous torment from Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be for those who imitate (Allah) in the act of His creation.'' `Aishah said: We tore it into pieces and made a cushion or two cushions out of that. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. 1680. Ibn `Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying, "Every painter will go to Hell, and for every portrait he has made, there will be appointed one who will chastise him in the Hell.'' Ibn `Abbas said: If you have to do it, draw pictures of trees and other inanimate things. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. 1684. Abu Talhah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a portrait.'' [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. In tat one, angels is refering to the angels of mercy, because the angels that record your deeds are always with you, dont think you gon cheat them by blockin them from yah house wit a portrait :-/ Of course there's alotta differing opinions, such as if yah draw a portrait but exclude tha face, some consider tat permisseable. I ain no Sheikh so mi a nah say a tin about it :) |

WOW this is some serious stuff. Thank you se7en and timbuktu and White Somali. Se7en, I'lll go to that old post and read it. I wonder about all the Mom's that take baby pictures, the pictures of dead Grandmas and Grandps that people want to show babies when they grow up and all. I know even the Bible speaks of idols and I always thought it meant if they were worshiped and such not just a nic nac or home decor. So are like bugs, butterflies and that stuff exempt? Things that would be considered to have no soul? |
So are like bugs, butterflies and that stuff exempt? Things that would be considered to have no soul?
sister, i thought it was clear. i will illustrate here, but it is only from memory. the actual hadith must be serached for, & i have not yet discoverd the art of these searches. On the day of Judgment, justice will be done to all. so much so that if a goat had hit another with its horn, both of them will called on that Day, & justice dispensed. animals, butterflies, bugs, etc. are not exempt, except for educational purposes. trees, fruits, vegetables, flowers etc. are exempt. that makes it difficult for jannah's homepage, but it is digital, & her sheikh does not disapprove. wa assalam |
