Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

What's the saying? There's a book in everyone (or something like that anyway!!)

After bhaloo's efforts in the Kabob folder I wonder what people would write about if they had the chance of being published?

Would you write something Islamic? Fiction? Comedy? Poetry?

The pen is yours ;-)

"Show Me the Papers!

Although I don't know how I would have it classified....
Horror, comedy, auto biographical, Islamic, nonfiction...

There’s more than a book, there’s an entire world! An infinite finitude (as David Robertson would have it) of brilliant scraps of thought, odd gems of inspiration, worthless but fascinating impulses, quaint bits of carving depicting old ideas, dangerous shards of anger, broken glass relationships, and a certain amount of grime, all bounded in a nutshell of a mind...

Life's about expression, so people spend their entire lives trying to figure out which bits are the real “them”...

Most don't, and their frantic search yields all sorts of oddities under the guise of “literature”, books expounding more and more about less and less...

But there are some who do figure it out, combining grace of form with grace of thought, and bringing writing that is a blessing to mankind...

That's what I would write about - a crazy something wonderful, a nameless something meaningful, that touches the hearts of others, and wins Allah's pleasure...

”He would be a very simple person who should leave in writing or receive in writing any art under the idea that the written word would be intelligible or certain.”

—Socrates (that's for me ;))

Writing has a way of turning the mind inward, searching our souls…like a deep reflecting pool, it shows us the beauty that was with us all along, just forgotten...

(Veery loosely quoted from I-can’t-remember-where ;D) (and that's for y'all  :-*)

What you say makes good rhetoric but few minds are worth being exposed, and then it is not worth exposing those that are worthy, for few if any would understand.

I'm really not a fan of reading books just for something to do, so I would write somethin people could use to learn about the Deen by. Of course I don't know the specifics of this book, since it seems like everytin already a been written about. But I guess tha's a good thing masha'Allah  :)

Ok, so I'm not the most concise individual to grace the earth... ;D

Ironic, because my meaning was precisely that my ambition is write stuff that isn't mere rhetoric, but exactly as WhiteSomali more aptly put it: something people could use to learn about the Deen by. That's what everything we do is about in the end.

Of course, everything does seem to have been written about, but in case there are still gaps...I suppose I just hoped that Allah might allow me to fill them with something good.

Writing does not complete an individual's understanding of life, but it can serve as an aide along the way. In an age when people forget so much more, and when people of true knowledge and understanding are rare, writing provides an amazing tool to explode the mundane into something meaningful, a window into life (that they might otherwise never see) during the quieter hours of their chaotic routines...

And I use "life" synonymously with Islam.

I was not criticising you chiq for I agree with your original post. I was merely stating that although each thought, each fleeting feeling, each mundane occurance holds a sentimental value, few hold an intellectual value. I must add that sentiments usually have more worth, and I should not have used the term 'rhetoric' for an exposition of them.

As far as your idea for writing goes, it is a good idea and you seemed skilled at writing so hopefully you can write something which is interesting to read and has Islamic perspectives or shades in it. If you do pursue writing, there is enough turmoil in this world to provide numerous interesting settings. Not even a thousand books can do justice to a single war ravaged town.

What of your pen  ;-)?

I often wonder if one day I will be browsing the aisles of Barnes and Noble and find on one of the shelves a book entitled "Another Thousand Roads to Makkah" with BrKhalid ;-) as editor, with a special introduction by Michael Wolfe.

And in my own autographed copy, I can imagine you would write the following:

"To my old friend,
May your pilgrimage never end..."

Inshaa Allah, I have the intention of writing a book.  Maybe I will start next year when I finish my coursework.  Inshaa Allah it will be semi-autobiographical....aimed at reaching out to like-minded Muslims of any age.

Disclaimer : This is in no way an admission that I can write well cos..sigh...I know my abilities.  I just feel the need to write, even if i dont get it published :)

UmmWafi....your 3am posts very well show that you CAN write, mashaAllah.  Honestly, I miss those :P

Way back when I was a newbie, I used to sit there with my eyes wide and jaw dropped to the floor jotting down some of your phrases.

(Yes, you have a fan)

I don't know if I could write a novel.  But if I could....I would love my non-fiction piece to resemble Fergal Keane's "A Season of Blood" and my fiction one to be something incredibly humorous but tragic at the same time.  Couldn't write Islamic stuff...too much responsibility.

Wasalaam.

I was thinking of something along medical lines.

Maybe the symptoms, causes and cures for PHD [Post Hajj Depression] and its closely linked variant PRD [Post Ramadhan Depression] ;-)

Athletes will tell you of the need to warm down after physical exercise and I would say the same was true after a major piece of spiritual exertion.

Lots of stuff out there about how to do Hajj but nothing really about how to react once your back home.

Who knows if I chucked in a few interesting characters I could make a screenplay out of it. ;-)

Someone find me a casting director....;)
