Salat and menstruation?

Assalamu alaikum,

I was just wondering if you could answer a few questions for a new muslim:

1.  How do you know when to do ghusl after your period?  I always seem to jump the gun
and take a shower and start praying only to find out a few hours later that it's not quite
over.  I know about testing with white cotton, only the problem is that one hour it comes
out clean, but an hour later it might not.

2.  If your period ends in the middle of the day, are you required to do ghusl asap and
start praying again?  If you are at work and can't do ghusl are you required to make up
any missed prayers, or are you supposed to start praying again at fajr the next day?

I probably have more questions, but these are the two that have been bugging me for a
while.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jazak allahu khair

wassalam

I am not a scholar, this is what I know: For fine details to questions, ask your Imam...is what I am supposed to say... but I know I would be too shy to ask mine and from other's comments... they don't always return phone calls or answer e-mails...

Another test is to look for the white discharge, and complete dryness...it is different type of dryness.. almost like soft sandpaper.

Got this email a while back...pray it helps inshaAllah:

what cant we do during the time?
- obviously we cant fast or make salah during our periods, [the salah doesnt have to be made up for, but the fasts do!]
"Stop formal prayer when your menses begins. When it is finished, wash off the blood from your body and return to formal prayer." [Bukhari]

- we cannot touch the quran, "none can touch but those who are pure"
(Al-Waqia 56:79) [there is some question about touching transalations
which i have not seen proof for] however it is permissible to recite the
quran from memory and make dua

Hadith of Bukhari and Muslim concerning the Eid prayer. Narrated Umm
Atiya (RA): "I heard Allahs Messenger (SAW) that the unmarried
virgins and the mature girls and the menstruating women should come out and participate in the good deeds as well as invocations of faithful believers but the menstruating women should keep away from the Musalla - praying place [Salat (prayers)]. Someone asked (Umm Atiya) (surprisingly), "Do you say the menstruating women?" She replied, "Doesnt a menstruating woman attend Arafat (Hajj) and such and such (other deeds)?"

ofcourse we can do tasbih, dhikr, give sadaqah, do righteous deeds, and other good things that are all forms of worship, and ofcourse duaa at all times [being on does not mean that we r cutt off from worshipping Allah swt!] :-)

-we cannot have full sexual intercourse [scientists are now researching many diseases that can arise beacuse of this]

-it also does not mean that no-one can touch us, or that they will become
unclean, even the prophet [saw] used to lie down with his head on Aisha's
[RA] thighs/ lap, and would recite the Quraan in this position when she would be on her period also It is related that 'A'isha said, "I used to comb the head of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, while I was menstruating." [bukhari]

- a man cannot divorce you while u r on ur period [subhanallah! Allah is
all-knowing and fully understand the state of women during their time of the month]

- while on hajj we can do everything other than tawaf and salah [if anyone
has evidence on taking the pill during this time than please let me know!]

ofcourse when the period is over [this can vary from 5-9 days for the
individual we must tak an obligatory complete bath 'ghusl' before we can
start praying again. the method of ghusl is:

Fardh Water in and out of the mouth in such a way that water reaches
everywhere. [gargle]
Water in and out of nostrils. [upto the soft bone i.e where it hurts]
Water all over entire body.

Sunnah Washing hands to wrist.
Washing private parts.
Niyyat (intention).
Perform Wudhu; second Wudhu after Ghusl is mustahab.
Water all over body from right to left three (3) times.

its better to make wudhu at the start of ghusl and then wash your whole body statring with the right side, make sure the water reaches every part of your body and no place remains dry including ur scalp [which means take off earrings jewellery etc]
the ghusl we do after our period is the same as after sexual intercourse but
it is advisable to remove pubic and underarm hair at this time.

Dear Anon,

You may find this helpful. Allahua'lam.

[quote]2.  If your period ends in the middle of the day, are you required to do ghusl asap and  start praying again?  If you are at work and can't do ghusl are you required to make up  any missed prayers, or are you supposed to start praying again at fajr the next day? [/quote]

If I know that I'd most probably end my periods middle of the today, I'd take ghusl anyways in the morning. If its time for Dhuhr (or any other time for solah) comes, I'd check if I'm clean. If I am, I'd do prayers. If I'm not, I'd abstain, and do ghusl the next day or whenever I'm clean.

There are different opinions with regards to touching/ reading the Qur'an (and/or those Qur'an with translations) for menstruating women. There are scholarly opinions which says that its permissable as well.

Allahua'lam  :-)
