laptops lost it, HELP!!!

Pray you are all well, Ameen.

K heres my masla...I have a Toshiba Laptop, specs:

OS = Windows XP Pro
System Model = S1800-814
Processor      = x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 10 GenuineIntel ~1095 Mhz
Total Physical Memory =256.00 MB

Recently, at random times, my laptop decides to shut down on its own.  I've run scandisk, disk defragmenter and anything else I can think of....nothing seems to have helped.

Any ideas what the problem could be? ???

JazakhaAllah khairan in advance.

Two things I can think of off the top of my head:
1. There's something wrong with your laptop's powersupply;
2. Your RAM (memory) is faulty (I've learned the hard way that almost anything can be attribute to faulty RAM)

The only solution to either problems is to take the laptop to a computer hardware store. Or if your laptop's still under warranty, you might want to try sending it back to the manufacturer for a new one.

Good luck.

:o

I kinda feel dumb typing this for I am sure you know of this. However I have met people who thought the following was actually a problem and not a feature.

Are you typing on the laptop or moving the mouse when it shutsdown?
If not it could be a power-save feature, and the laptop goes into hybernate mode. You have to press the on switch to get it powered up again, but it should resume to the way you left it.

Yeah. Plase do check your power save features. Also if your machine is still under warrenty call the toshiba helpdesk. They are very helpful.

Their Number is : 1-800-457-7777

Trivia: The helpdesk is based in Turkie. So feel free to say salaam to the operator.

heyyyy since y'all are giving out free laptop help.. i have an ooold laptop and it works ok and stuff but more often than not the screen starts flickering, it gets fuzzy and messed up and then goes out completely.. It's on just  goes blank.....and sometimes if i shake it, it straightens back up...sometimes it doesn't...  I'm pretty sure it's not sleep/standby/hibernate mode. It's just messed up... So should I take it someplace to replace the screen?

Most probably, your screen is dying. On the brighter side, there might be a loose connection between the screen and the laptop. If you are handy with opening hardware, you can check for both things. You'll usually find the description and a diagram on the web. Most probably you'll have to replace the screen. And the best way to do it is to buy another laptop of the same make and model from, say, craigslist. There is nothing you can do outside the box to fix it.

BTW, if the display gets better by shaking or slightly twisting the display, it might as well be a loose connection.

Nisa:

if your laptop is on warranty, ship it back. Don't waste your brain cells on this. If it is out of warranty, then the info you have given is not enough. In that case:

Does your system shuts down or goes standby?
Are you running on battery when this happens?
Do you leave your system running for long periods without moving the mouse or using the keyboard?
What happens on the next reboot? Does windows gives out a message? And if yes, what is it?

Totally shuts down
Are you running on battery when this happens?
I'm plugged in most of the time....so yep running on battery.
Do you leave your system running for long periods without moving the mouse or using the keyboard?
Erm....sometimes...if I'm listening to a lecture I've downloaded or Qur'an...then yeah I tend to jus sit there and listen away.  What would you say is a long period  of time in this case? ???
What happens on the next reboot? Does windows gives out a message? And if yes, what is it?
When I reboot, no message pops up...it jus boots up same as usual.

Someone suggested my fan was overheating...and that was causing the system to literally melt down and shut down for safety....I was thinking of getting my internal fan changed to a quieter version and one that isnt prone to overheat.

I'd be so grateful for any other suggestions superFob akhi...jazakhallah khairan to all those replied :)

It seems like your system is out of warranty  :(

1 Ghz Intel processors have no heating problems, as far as I know. And toshiba is too good a company to put cheap components inside a system. Yes, listening to lectures may lead to system shut down. You have to check your power settings. Its in "start->control panel->Power Options". Change the "Power Schemes" to "Always On" and make sure the rest of the four fields are all set to "Never". Click OK and test the system by letting it run for a whole day. If this works out for you, tweak the power settings to your liking.

If you know how to get into the CMOS setup, make sure that all power options are disabled. But I am not sure whether this would help or not.

This might be a simple solution to your problem, or you may have a faulty system.

I kinda bought it off someone..who had the machine for a few months, and wanted to sell it...sounds dodgy I know...but I know the brother, hes a computer science major, so he changes laptops like theres no tomorrow lol

I'll try the power saving options you suggested...if all else fails, my daddy knows a brother who can sort it out for next to nothing  :)

Jazakhallah khairan, heres a bebzi for your trouble  []

I have a IBM 365XD, circa Pentium166.. There are wires that run from the LCD screen and to circuitary below the keyboard.  If the screen is displaying fine than its probably a "loose wire " thingy. If you have a Jewellers Screwdriver set you can open it up and diagnose the screen further. If you find that wires are ok and its the screen, than e-bay is your friend. You canget new laptop screens for older machines.

Sister Jannah! I think you can try an external monitor with your laptop (usually laptops have video connection for external monitor), if your laptop works fine with an external monitor it means something wrong with your laptop's screen but if you have the same problem with an external monitor then it means something might be wrong with configuration or operating system or video card of the laptop.
