Not knowing the ages, etc I can try to give you a few of my ideas from experience. In 4H an animal/farm raising type USA kids group, kids had to do educational talks, poster, etc on their subjects. (ie: goats, sheep, chickens)

Everyone got recognised. Cerificates are cheap at printers and you can buy the individually or in packs.

They always told the child what they did great, and also offered advise on how to improve.

Always let a child know what they did good and offer a little advice in a gentle way what they can inprove on. (one time my son was told that he had a great presentation and if he would talk a little slower that would be nice, then the person  smiled and told my son I know this can be scarey and you get nervous or you sometimes talk fast to get it over with.)

Smile a lot, that warm smile makes they less scared. Smile and nob. (This gives both acceptance and encouragement)  :)

A stone face or no expression makes them nervous and makes them feel like they are not doing well.

Be patient, if they mess up or get stuck on anything, let them know it's ok (if  speeches or recitations)
if they get stuck smile and nob encourages then to slow down and take a deep breath when they feel the pressure.

Hope this helps.

Have more than one judge so that there's like a vote on who wins, and no biased opinions.

Say "fourth" instead of "last" ie mentionwhat they did, never what they didn't...

Also smile, and if young enough, hug!  :)  :)  :)
