here is a scenario.

You walk up to a Bank machine to take out some cash and you see a 20 dollar bill in the cash dispenser. What do u do?

Wa'alaikum Assalam,

Walk in the bank, hand over the $20 bill to them and tell them that perhaps it belongs to the last person who used the machine. Maybe, they have some system to track the last user through his name or ID whatever u use to use the ATM. So, the money goes back to either the owner or the bank itself.

Wassalam.

It's one of those ATM machines, the bank is no where near.

bro...i'm sure they have a branch somewhere nearby...maybe a few blocks away...maybe via the path...maybe you catch my drift?  heh.

Otherwise, give it away to charity.  (no..not the homeless guy with the broken leg outside of Tims, even though he's awfully nice)...

Wasalaam.

Maybe u can find out who owns those ATMs. Note down the day, time and location when and where u found that money, and once u find out who owns that ATM, contact the person or Bank, and give them all the info. There is one person that I know of in our community who has this side business of running the ATMs at different locations, so it can be a person who could be the owner of ATM. Just go to the nearest gas station or shop and ask them who owns the ATM? Sometimes its the gas station owners themselves nearby who own the ATMs.

Wassalam.

Well, actually I asked the people around if they had used the Bank machine at the time. and they said no. I saw a friend and asked him what I should do and he said ... well any ways I walked with him, hoping that whoever had left the money would come back and get it. and when I came back, a chinese dude was by the machine. Don't know what happened then....

I don't think there is a chance of this happening again but if it happens I'll keep the suggestions in mind InshAllah.

Assalam Aleikum,

We were just discussing this the other day with the Imam at our masjid. And the rules regarding Lost&Found are pretty strict. If you pick it up, you have to proactively find the owner and you cannot just go and put the lost object back in the place you found it (ie if you picked it up in the first place).

Here are some details on this issue from the Hanafi perspective:

It depends.. on where you live I guess. From the link I pasted above:

2. If a person finds something and does not pick it up, there will be no sin on him. However, if he finds it at a place where there is the fear that if he does not pick it up, someone else will pick it up and will not return it to it's owner, then it becomes wajib on this person to pick it up and return it to it's owner.

I hope the Chinese dude was the owner.

That's interesting... in Dimashq one time after the Eid prayer we saw a 500 bill floating around on the ground.. I went to pick it up but another girl stopped me and she said 'do you know the fiqh if u pick it up!!'  u have to go thru all the means to find the owner, u have to wait a year, u have to come back to this place, etc etc... and i was like whoaaaa ok forget it ;)

Hopefully the owner found it inshallah or it went to a good cause....

If you have picked up the bill:
The time and date of your transaction as well as the ATM device ID is recorded. Please check your statements (online or offline) for it. The person is the last one who withdrew cash from that station. Now go to the bank, armed with that information, and talk to the manager. $20 is not an amount banks would care to worry about though. So its a tricky situation. But that is the most you can do, imho.

Btw, I once found a bunch of keys lying on the curb. It had a library ID tag on it, and the library was just across the street. I went inside the library, deposited the keys to the receptionist and asked her to notify the ID holder about the keys. Is there anything wrong with this picture?

This thread also reminds me of my undergrad days. We were freshmen, and had to take an intro course in civil engg. The field classes involved using a theodolite, an expensive instrument. The instructor told before hand, "if anything untowards happen to this device, there will be consequences, including large payouts and possibly, police involvement". Now the students who really wanted to learn were scared, even to explore and use it properly, and the louts had bucketfuls of fun, using it as a telescope, to explore much more than is allowed.
