Burn it?

From a post in the UCC
Unquestionably, "progressive" or "moderate" are loaded terms. The members of the Wahhabi Council for Scientific Research and Legal Opinions, the supreme religious body in Saudi Arabia, for example, describe themselves as moderate and mainstream as they rule that women over 40 are prohibited from wearing bras.
? What is this all about? Cultural? Fiqh?

Reminds me of the 60's..... We called it bra burning!

[glow=red,2,300]Read message carefully!

Try this soon, before Google fixes its site:

1) Go to www.google.com;

2) type in (but don't hit return): weapons of mass destruction

3) Hit the "I'm feeling lucky" button, instead of the normal "Google search"
button;

4) READ what appears to be a normal error message carefully.

Yeah.  When I read it, I was like, Huh?  I don't even understand what that signifies.  I mean I'd rather see my mom wearing one then not if you know what I mean.  But I agree with bro Yousef and would like to add that some Saudi Arabian laws are backwards and based on tradition rather then religion.

This particular strange law is not religion based.

Let me just clear it alittle abit...Im not referring to the Saudi scholars, but to the writer of the passage. :)

I find it very strange, that you are believing some unknown guy, who from his talking seems to be talking rubbish!? What make you assume that he is truthful?

Bro Yousef....

Now I'm not saying it's a true law b/c you have to check the facts before you assume it's truth when written by a Kafr.

But I have read about laws from Saudi Arabia that are backwards and based on tradition.  I can't think of them now, but did you know that teh Prince tawafs around the Kaa'ba with his helicopter instead of doing it the Prophet's (SAW)'s way?

Don't get me wrong I'm not dissin' all of Saudi men.  Just some of them.  I could tell you apersonal story about my Hajj experience and a Saudi man, but that's beside the point.

All I'm saying is that when I read that, I did question it's authenticity and didn't go further into making it a fact, aye.  But if it is true then it's not religion based.  That's all I'm saying.

Hope I'm more clearer now, forgive me.

Ma-asalaama....

Momma mod... I'm wounded.  :'(

I forwarded you smt about this on 28 Jan 2002... but alas...

Anyways.. for the sancity of this board, I will not copy and past the e-mail here, coz, the mail suggests a hint of ulama' bashing (it criticises some of their fatwas).

But for those who wish to explore further a fatwa on this, pls refer to
Fatawa al-Lajmah (Ibn Jibreen) p 205. I don't have access to it.

On another note, I'd look at wot is written by the author abt the ulama with barrels of salt.

For the time being, lets have husnuzon on the ulama, till we receive smt that is concrete.

Here is a tissue and a bandaid....

You forwarded me something a year and a half ago and expect me to remember this?  :P Surely you must know the condition of my mind by now! ;)

I have known Islam for a long time... but just getting to learn the cultural aspects of society that is often erronously attributed to Islam...

I was wondering if this bralessness was something I should know about.
ironically an American 50 year old sister just decided to stop wearing a bra... she said in her hubby's country, women do not wear under garments.  :oas she is swinging down the street all I could think of was this post ...

Instead of pinches of salt as the common phrase goes, I'm just drumming in on the need to be more careful with wot we read instead of swallowing anything on sight. Hence, the barrels of salt.  :)

i replied in that thread that i suspect the word in the fatwa to be "exempted" rather than "prohibited".

here i would add that 40 years would also be an exaggeration. I agree that the original author either has an agenda of running down ulema, or lets his imagination run away.

i suggest a look at that thread.

When all is said and done, going braless when you over 40 is simply ridiculous!!!  Just imagine those of us over 40 working in offices braless!  Subhanallah!  And walking down the street without a bra is even more ridiculous.  Sis, Kathy, I doubled up with laughter at the imagine you painted.  Shukran.

As for Saudi Arabia and the people governing it, I could say lots and lots till I turn all shades of colours imaginable.  But I will say this, it is a very sorry example of a Muslim country, especially since it is the land where is Islam was born and our Rasullah  [saw] was too.

women not being able to drive (although the women of the royal family do it anyway, i hear) -- I dont think that is Islamically based  ???--- however ... I lived in Riyadh -- those men are NUTS when it comes to driving!!!!!! I wouldnt even WANT to drive there, and I LOVE  :-* driving
!!!!!  ;D

and that "weapons of mass destruction" search ---- it's still there and it's hilarious!!!!!! i especially like the part about, if you are Pres. Bush, make sure you spelled the name of the country correctly(IRAQ).  :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ (The title line is even funnier now that Bush has egg all over his face, since they didnt find anything!!!)

I just cannot imagine Allah asking women if they wore bra or not!!

It is silly.   I am guessing he will not ask if they drove or not either!

What we will be ask about is what we wore on the outside for the people to see.

I am speechless!!

Okay so if they're prohibited from wearing it and she does under that baggy abaya.....does that mean that the Saudi bra squad and their radar vision will give them an upper body search to confirm their suspicions? And if they are confirmed will they be ticketed and taken to court to stand before a judge to state their case? If not will they be placed in jail for blinding the eyes of millionaire polygamists? :o

I'm sorry but these kind of things about that government are hard to figure as completely hilarious or just simply ridiculous! ::)
