Hey, Church bells are the norm here too -- chiming every quarter hour, just to remind folks that time is passing, I suppose.  But it also must be said that only the "old" churches are allowed to do it.  There is a noise ordinance law in Zurich which forbids all noisy things (including things like washing your clothes after 10 p.m. -- which is widely ignored, unless you have tattletale neighbors), but which has a grandfather clause.  If the said noisemaker has been making noise in said fashion for a really long time (I think it is something like at least earlier than the late 18 hundreds) then it is allowed to make noise today.  If it is newer, then it's a no go.  So, lots of old wacky clocks in town centers go off every quarter hour, as do church bells in sufficiently old buildings.  But no new churches can ring their bells, or make any other noise, here.  And no masjids can let the adthan be heard outside, unless they were doing that way back when, which they weren't, since the Muslim presence in Zurich is relatively new.
