Would like to know what are the tourist attractions there. What to see etc etc specially from children's point of view.
Inshallah we will be going there for a week in August (me and kids will be free and would like to explore the city and near by :) )

Not from Columbia, MD but been there but Columbia MD there is nothing to do there.

Perhaps you can drive above 30 miles from there and go the Baltimore Aquarium or the Baltimore Zoo.  The Baltimore Aquarium is an excellent place to visit.  They have a Dophin Show, and Rain Forrest, an excellant selection of fish.  Outside the Baltimore Aquarium you can rent a boat and go boat riding, also there is an old submarine you can tour, also there is an ESPN zone it has games and things like this.  All this is outside the Baltimore Aquarium.  Also accross the street is a nice mall, as well as some nice sea food, and many other things on the pier.

Then there is the Baltimore Zoo, it is in a remote area.  However it is a nice zoo, not much around it.  The Aquarium is much nicer.

But that all I know about the area.

So check with somebody who knows a little more than me.

As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah,

Columbia, MD is interesting; it's actually kind of a "manufactured" city based on some guy's vision in the 60's or 70's to build a community half-way between Baltimore and D.C. where people of different socio-economic backgrounds could all live together or something to this effect. At least that's what a friend told me who lives there. It's clean and pretty diverse, but on the flip side, all of the homes/complexes look really similar, so it's easy to get lost there. It's more suburbs than anything else. Not sure if there are any other "attractions," but there are a lot of Muslims and a really  big mall.

Otherwise, as Nawawi pointed out, take advantage of its location and go either south to Washington, DC or north to Baltimore (pronounced, "Bawldimore" here). Took my cousin's kids to the Balto Zoo once, they loved it (they'd love any zoo, though). As mentioned, there's also the Inner Harbor (boat rides, etc), where there's the Maryland Science Center, ESPN Zone, Baltimore Aquarium, restaurants, etc. And not far from it is Camden Yards (funny story, my mom is a die-hard Yankees fan, don't ask me why. She's visiting me in MD and was obsessively trying to watch the Yankees vs. Orioles game last night on my disfunctional tv, hehe; funny sight). Parking may not be all that great downtown (anywhere), but the Commuter (Light) rail is convenient.

Washington DC is much bigger, obviously. There are a lot of cool areas in DC, that I'd say, are even better than NYC, but I haven't really entertained any kids there...tons of museums and some parks, etc, I'm sure there are a lot more things to do there kids would like. The Metro rail is also convenient there (parking is even worse here). Let me know if you want more info, I have friends in DC I can ask, inshaa'Allah.

Also, for jumu'ah, there's the Owen Brown Interfaith Center for jumu'ah in Columbia (the Muslims there are in the process of building a masjid in Columbia), Al-Rahmah masjid near Balto, Al-Haqq masjid in downtown Balto, Dar-us-Salaam masjid in College Park (near DC, one of my favorite masjids, please make du'aa for this community, I believe they just had a cross-burning incident at the school there a few days ago), etc.

Thanks Sr Sofia and Nawawi. The zoo and acquirium sound great. I have heard about the acquirium. I will check out the islamicfinder for masjid there. I am pretty sure we will be in downtown area( two years ago we went to DC for a week(becuase of my husband' work) me and kids really enjoyed we had the whole week and went to all the museums in detail. we were really hoping that it will be DC this year also but ...  ) I know parking in DC is extremely expensive luckily we were staying in downtown and went everywhere on foot(even my younger one who was 4 at that time :) )

There's also Port Discovery in Baltimore...i don't know what it exactly is, but apparently some huge little kids arena... that even adults looovee. unfortunately i haven't been able to go :(
but check it out...

In Baltimore there is Masjid Ar Rahma, or the Islamic center of Baltimore? I think..its located on jonnycake road and unlisted on Islamicfinder..very strange...cuz its a huge center where everyone goes to..maybe you can call information and see.

the rest of the Islamic stuff listed is located on north avenue, and from what i know about it,you may wanna stay away from there. The thing with Baltimore aside from the inner harbor everything else is pretty g h e t t o
and pretty scary. So if you have little ones, you might wanna stay in the main areas.

There is an interfaith center in Columbia where they have Friday Khutbas..the Imam is amazing:) so if you are gonna be there on Friday check it out.

Okay that's it I think..columbia itself is pretty dead aside from the mall  :P Enjoy ya trip:)

Sis,
Maliha :-)

Masjid in B-more,  Well the ones downtown B-more are in the Ghetto.  If you are not familar with the area I wouldn't suggest going there.

However there is a masjid in B-more, Masjid Rahman and there is one in Columbia.

Here is the webiste for the masjid in columbia http://www.taqwa.net/

And Here is the website for the masjid Rahman http://www.isb.org/

As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah,

What's this, knockin' downtown masaajid? Those are my favorites (north of College Park)!   :P

But when visiting from out of town, I'd definitely recommend visiting a larger masjid (the ones downtown have the most amazing communities and khutbahs, mashaa'Allah, but easy to get lost and usually smaller). Islamicfinder won't necessarily tell you which ones those are, so IM me if you want when you're in town, inshaa'Allah (you too, Mystic!).

:)
