KFF land Morocco invite

By HEZEKIAH WEPUKHULU

The Kenya Football Federation has landed an invitation for an all-expenses paid trip to Casablanca from Moroccan soccer officials.

Yesterday the acting KFF secretary-general, Allan Chenane, said they had received and accepted the invitation for a September 10 match between Harambee Stars and the Morocco national team in the Moroccan city.

Both Kenya and Morocco are among the qualifiers for the 2004 African Nations Cup finals in Tunisia in January and will be using the match as a testing ground for the tournament.

Depending on the availability of funds, the KFF has also set up an elaborate build-up programme for Harambee Stars. Hoping everything goes according to plan, the KFF has planned a build-up match against Bafana Bafana (South Africa) next month in Nairobi.

Then there is a planned trip to China.

But Chenane said they needed funds to meet the cost of preparing the team adequately for the continental championship.

He said: "We have not been able to get the national team to assemble for training for the forthcoming international warm-up matches because we do not have the money."

Also scheduled for next month is the regional under-19s championship in Zanzibar.

Chenane said the KFF would need an estimated Sh2.5 million for the team's preparations and participation.

This will be followed by the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Sudan from December 28 to January 10, 2004-which would be the final build-up for Kenya and Rwanda, the two member-countries featuring in the Nations Cup finals. Chenane said the KFF executive would meet next weekend to discuss the matter and plan for the President's Cup first-round fixtures which get under way on August 2.

Meanwhile, Dennis Oliech, committed to his ambition to play in Europe, has declined an offer to sign for Tanzania's Simba FC.

Simba has allegedly approached Oliech to sign up for them in order to bolster their attack in the African Champions League but the teenage striker has reportedly turned them down.

Simba, coached by Kenya-born James Siang'a, are the only East African club to reach the money-spinning league phase of the continental club championship.
