As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah, You've already "faced me," but I'll be there, insha'Allah (so will Saadia and Noera, etc). I loooove Chicago. Not to mention seeing 30-40,000 of my people in one place (don't get to see that everyday in the US). Otherwise, the lobby scene was starting to turn me off last year, so I was kind of if-fy until a few months ago (did I mention, I love Chicago?). So I'll be the one with the sign: "IT'S LATE..err..EARLY...GO PRAY FAJR, LOBBY PEOPLE, SHEESH." Jannah, if there's a sisters meet-up at ISNA, let us know, insha'Allah. :) |

[slm] And we have extra rooms due to cancellations from my group. We may have 2 extra rooms. I told the Imam to not cancel them since we might need them so if no one needs them then I'll have her cancel the 2 rooms so that other ppl I don't know will have a chance to get them. Salaams, Just a question how can one maintain hijaab in an area like 30-000 to 40,000 people ???. Or have I got my maths wrong, surely an event like this is bound to cause some problems for hayaa like girls and guys just loitering and eyeing each other up ?? Or am I being to radical ?? [slm] It's all in your intentions Bro. The reason why I go is b/c I love listening to the lectures. I love being in a place where it's just all Muslims all the time. This year, I get to meet my long lost sister Jannah so it's extra special. All in your intentions so Allahu Alim... Ma-asalaama... |

As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah, BroHanif, the convention centers chosen for ISNA are huuuge (the McCormick center was once, if not still, the largest convention center in the US). Otherwise, yes, the meat-market/mackin' aspect can get a bit much. That's one of the reasons I wasn't sure I'd go again. But at the same time, lobby-people seem to go with a certain intention, don't attend the lectures, and hang out in hotel lobbies, instead of the convention center where the lectures are. So it's easy to avoid that scene. I'd never thought of ISNA as any different than being in a Muslim country. Families/friends getting together, long-lost friends reuniting, trying to pack in as much time with local scholars/motivators/speakers as one humanly can take advantage of, etc. Sisters who aren't normally out in public, aren't normally at ISNA, either, much less anywhere else (which would bring in the whole "should women stay in-doors/what's the point of hijaab/jilbaab/niqaab" debate). So unless you're one of the "lobby-people," it's actually just as easy to maintain hayaa' there than any other public place, if not, easier. The seating arrangements at lectures are normally segregated by gender, you stay in a room with same gender friends or family, people are generally more covered there than outside (many sisters who normally don't wear hijaab/jilbaab are more comfortable wearing it there, etc). At the very least, I'd advise not hanging out in the lobbies, not dressing flashy, being covered, and sticking with same-gender crowds/mahrem. Same rules I'd set for myself at any other public place. Allahu A'lim. |

[wlm] U know what was always so interesting to me is how different the US and UK are on segregation. Like the UK brothers & sisters are like so hard core and in the US we tend to be more relaxed and friendly while still keeping haya'. Like in syria all the american brothers and sisters knew each other and each other's backgrounds and would help each other in what they could. The UK bros and sis's didn't even know each others' names! We used to have this running joke in Syria, if one of us sisters fell on the sidewalk and was dying and yelling for help what would happen. If a British bro walked by he would look away hurriedly, say "Astaghfirulllah" and run away. If a Canadian bro walked by he would look and say "SubhanAllah let me go call someone to help you" and run away. And if an American bro walked by, he would say "Alhamdulillah, what's your name sister" lol and help her... Jowk.. just a jowk ;) |

[slm] Well I don't think there is anything WRONG in women going to Islamic seminars and workshops after all they are going to listen to Islamic scholars and clerics over there not Micheal Jakson or Madona. Actually sometimes we put some extra restrictions to ourselves which are originally not there and I think it do more harm than good. It's very clear from following mentioned hadith that woman are not only allowed but encouraged that they should attend Islamic gathering which are in fact very rare and just few times a year or so. Volume 1, Book 6, Number 321: Narrated Aiyub: Hafsa said, 'We used to forbid our young women to go out for the two 'Id prayers. A woman came and stayed at the palace of Bani Khalaf and she narrated about her sister whose husband took part in twelve holy battles along with the Prophet and her sister was with her husband in six (out of these twelve). She (the woman's sister) said, "We used to treat the wounded, look after the patients and once I asked the Prophet, 'Is there any harm for any of us to stay at home if she doesn't have a veil?' He said, 'She should cover herself with the veil of her companion and should participate in the good deeds and in the religious gathering of the Muslims.' When Um 'Atiya came I asked her whether she had heard it from the Prophet. She replied, "Yes. May my father be sacrificed for him (the Prophet)! (Whenever she mentioned the Prophet she used to say, 'May my father be sacrificed for him) I have heard the Prophet saying, 'The unmarried young virgins and the mature girl who stay often screened or the young unmarried virgins who often stay screened and the menstruating women should come out and participate in the good deeds as well as the religious gathering of the faithful believers but the menstruating women should keep away from the Musalla (praying place).' " Hafsa asked Um 'Atiya surprisingly, "Do you say the menstruating women?" She replied, "Doesn't a menstruating woman attend 'Arafat (Hajj) and such and such (other deeds)?" Umar (rau) was against of women going out with veil and even ask Holy Prophet [saw] to ask his [saw] wives to wear veil but Holy Prophet [saw] didn't do so until the verse of hijab/veil were revealed. As it's mentioned in following mentioned hadith: Volume 1, Book 4, Number 148: Narrated 'Aisha: The wives of the Prophet used to go to Al-Manasi, a vast open place (near Baqia at Medina) to answer the call of nature at night. 'Umar used to say to the Prophet "Let your wives be veiled," but Allah's Apostle did not do so. One night Sauda bint Zam'a the wife of the Prophet went out at 'Isha' time and she was a tall lady. 'Umar addressed her and said, "I have recognized you, O Sauda." He said so, as he desired eagerly that the verses of Al-Hijab (the observing of veils by the Muslim women) may be revealed. So Allah revealed the verses of "Al-Hijab" (A complete body cover excluding the eyes). There is another example again from Umar (rau), one of his wife used to go to mosque regularly for prayer. (That's after verses of Al-Hijab were revealed) One Sahabi asked her why do you go to mosque for prayer, you are not aware of ghaira of Umar (rau)? She asked if that's the case then why doesn't he stop me? The Sahabi replied because of the hadith of Holy Prophet [saw] which says that men shouldn't stop women if they want to go out to participate in good deeds. What brother Hanif said is also very important that women shouldn't mix up with non mehrams freely and being FRIENDLY with non mehrams is neither encouraged nor allowed but I think that's something which can be easily taken care of during such gatherings. |

[slm] Alhamdullillah I dont' think the answer to this issue is *restricting* women...Allah knows we all need knowledge and the sources of which are very limited...so we should all take every opportunity we can to increase ourselves in Imaan and motivation. Last year my hubby, sis and I went for the first time...it was in DC...I had never gone before cuz me always broke and Chicago might as well be Makkah for moi ::) So anywho, we were very shocked at the behavior of the *lobbyists*...sigh... instead of it being an inspirational environment for my sis, i ended up walking around lecturing her on what *not* to do, wear, and act in public :( although we had a *good* experience Alhamdullillah *inside* the workshops, and lectures....my hubby was really put off by the whole scene :( and after experiencing the amazing intimacy, solace, seclusion and hayaa at the retreat, i see the *huge* difference in the two settings. i personally enjoyed the experience despite the negative side of it, i don't think i could drag my hubby back there though:( ...sigh...maybe w/some convincing and maybe when we have the extra money to trek to Makkah errr chicago and maybe.....yeah....Inshaallah maybe ;) aight...me out... peace, Maliha :-) [wlm] |

Salaams, Jannah hmmm are you saying the UK brothers and sisters are not friendly ? of course we are. Yet we need to maintain a level of hayaa and respect for each other. I'm not saying that we shouldn't go to these conferences, nor am I saying do not talk to sisters and keep em in a locked room, I'm on about the logistics of such a gathering. Thats all sis. If I was so conservative in my views I don't think I'd be talking to so many of the sisters on this board. The American brothers can talk the talk but its the British brothers who walk the walk. Trust me. By the way this is a JOKE. Please no one send me any IM messages about this. What happened to light hearted humour on this site ??? Salaams, Hanif |

Salaams, Masah-Allah seems a very packed program on both events. However I thought the MSA one might have interested some of you a bit more Serving the Divine Set A. 11:00 to 11:40pm *shy smile* Another thing is I find the program is really expensive to go to, $120 for a night to stay in the hotel and if theres a family going I guess its even more expensive. If you live on one side of the coast and going to the other would also be another cost factor. I didn't see your name on the list of MSA talkers Jannah? May Allah make the programme a success and may you all learn, practice and propogate to others. Salaams Hanif |

[wlm] BroHanif that should definitely be an interesting session :-/ I'll let you know what goes on :) About the expense.. it is actually about $100 a night for the hotel rooms, most people split in with roomates and it's not so bad for the weekend. $100 is pretty cheap for a decent hotel actually. There are others nearby that people can book that are much cheaper if they wanted to. There is also the registration fee which is less for students, more for professionals and families. Most people can save up to go and believe me, most Muslims have the money they are just cheap when it comes to an Islamic conference for some reason, but if you go anywhere that's how much it costs and probably more. Chicago is smack in the middle of north america so it equals it out for people, plus sometimes they move it to other places so everyone gets a chance. ISNA usually loses money on the convention expenses because they just charge to pay the expenses. Hopefully they'll make up some money for resources and programs through fundraising inshaallah. Why would i be on the MSA talkers.. i'm like old skool now ;) ameen on ur dua inshaAllah PS: For anyone who's going.. why don't we meet up Friday around dinner time somewhere? |
