I am off to Southern Sudan on official business for 10 days!  Will probably learn a few tricks on how to survive on the Survivor Competition and beat all the youngers in here!  The place is remote I hear and I need surviving skills to make it.  So far, I have been briefed security wise and advised on the type of survival kit required.

If I am able to log in into the net, will follow up on the competition which is about to unfold.  If not, I hope to make it back in time, INSHA-ALLAH.

Young and old here, watch out!!!

May Allah protect you on your trip. I have friends who visited the Sudaan, the pictures were absolutely beautiful, masha'Allah.

Here I am logging in from Western Equatoria in Southern Sudan.  All my pre-conceptions about not going to a place where technology and the basic necessities in life do not exist have been shot to nothing!

I arrived here after six hours after two stops, one in Nothern Kenya and another town in Southern Sudan in the Lake Region.  We flew of the river Nile.  This small town is called Yambio it has no electricity but the Eqautorial Forest surronding it is magnificent!!!  UNICEF has a camp which has a generator running 24 hours a day, an IT (information technology) unit with a VSAT equipment which runs 24 hours a day.  As a result, the internet is faster and you can access several websites at a go.  A radio equipment, telephones in each room in the office, houses for staff and the guests.  I even have a self-contained room.  Just imagine all these in the middle of nowhere!!!

Southern Sudan is controlled by rebel groups.  The government in the north has not business here.  The people here a Christian who speak Arabic fluently they put me to SHAME!!!  Arabic their national language. I was utterly embassed when my colleagues here spoke to me in Arabic assumig that I know Arabic since I am a Muslim.

We taken on tour of the town and I magine what I saw.  A Masjid. It is burnt during the war between the rebels and the government.  Now, it stands desolate but still intact with the minaret above the every house in the vicinity.  I stood and watched it for a while imagining the people who performed their salat in it.  Allah Akbar.  There is no single Muslim in the community living here except for two of my colleagues who are Bangladeshis.

The place is full of mosquitos and crawling insects.  Windows are covered with wire mesh to prevent the mosquitos and one has to wear strong shoes (sneakers) and long sleeved clothing.  We have mineral water and food is served to all staff my a hired company.  We near the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) which only 21 kilometers away from here.  So is the Central African Republic.

Well, enough of my rumbling.

Cheers,

Halima

Asalaam Alaikum All!

Today, I am writing from Rumbek which is in the Bar El Ghazal region of Sudan.  It is a very hot area with temperatures as high as 38 degress celcious.  I have been here since the 8th of August.  It rained heavily the last two days but the heat did not abate.

The people here also speak Arabic fluently.  We took a tour of the town and I found out another Mosque here which completely burnt down.  I culd not take the picture of the masjid in Yambio because to do so, I have to get permission from the local authority, the commanders!  Same thing here in Rumbek.  When I asked why I need permission to take a picture of the masjid,  I was told they are suspicious of anybody taking a photo becuase of the political situation here.  Hence, I can only take photos in the camps in both locations.  I was very disappointed!

There over 60 tribes in Southern Sudan alone!  And I though Kenya had many tribes!  Each tribe here as its own language.

I leave for Lokichoggio (known as Loki in short) nothern Kenya, today.  Will spend two day there and then leave for home (Nairobi) on Friday.
