Has anybody seen this programme called 'River City'?? I tuned in today to a storyline about a hijabi girl (one of the first on mainstream telly) on her first date!! Not sure where the writers think they're going with this one...but they seem to totally override the fact that although she looks to be a practicing Muslim onscreen, she sees nothing wrong with having a relationship....giving out the wrong kinda information in my opinion...any other thoughts?

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

Sr Danyala it seems that this programme is seen only in Scotland from the BBC website.

I'm sure MPAC and the MCB would be interested in this.

To keep you updated - I recieved this response from BBC...

Dear Muslimah

Thank you for your comments regarding the programme "River City".

The character Zara is just that, a character in a drama that is produced for
entertainment, she is not there to represent the muslims or give an actual
portrayal of a muslim girl facing the same situations.  Soaps are intended to
reflect the different attitudes of people today but as I am sure you will
appreciate that a character in a drama has more licence to be different and
usually more controversial.

Please be assured that we have logged your concerns for the attention of the
producer and also for senior management.

Thank you again for contacting us.

Regards

I think, on their terms, this is a fair enough topic to persue - because many Muslims do face this dilemma. But I think we generally need more  diverse story lines rather than the usual 'Muslims caught between drink/sex/drugs that it given to us as drama. Trust me, in my family there is planty of drama without any of the above :D

ma asalaamah and take care
