Are Imam Suhaib Webb speeches distributed through Awakening?  If so, do you know when his series "Mothers of the Believers" will be available?  This was a series of lectures he had in Southern Cali in February I believe.
Jazakallahu khayrun.

I bought both the Mothers of the Believers by Suhaib Webb series and the Muhammad [saw] series by Anwar al Awlaki. Unfortunately they're only in CD right now so it's mad $$... we very poor now after the convention ;)  InshaAllah I'll post  a review when done listening to them...

BTW does anyone have any bio info on Suhaib Webb?? Someone at the convention told me he went to Madina to study for 10 years and he's from Oklahoma. Then someone else told me he's never left the US and did all his hifz from the US...???

[slm],

To my best knowledge, Sh. Suhaib Webb has studied under sheikhs in USA only. He was based in Oklahoma first where he was the Imam of a 'desi majority' masjid and then he moved to california to be a teacher with the Islamic american university in santa clara. He is married to malaysian sister and has a little daughter.

He gave the mothers of the believers lecture series in a masjid here. Lot of people attended it and it was awesome. A sister took shahadah as well in one of the lectures.

Jannah, Br. Suhaib Webb hasn't even been Muslim for 10 years!  Let alone having gone to a Muslim country to study for 10 years.

To my knowledge, he accepted Islam in 95.  He memorized the Qur'an on his own.  And what momineqbal has said about the rest is correct, as far as I know.

Wallahu a'lam.

The first time I had heard Imam Suhaib Webb speak was at a MAS conference a few years back here in LA when he had just started the talk circuit.  I thought mashaAllah he was awesome then but since then mashaAllah he has really really evolved in his knowledge.

I got this following excerpt bout him from Berkeley's MSA site:  "Imam Suhaib Webb studied traditional Islamic knowledge with Shaykh Abu Mustafa of Senegal. He completed his B.A. in education, while serving as an Imam for the Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma, and worked as a teacher at the Mercy Institute. He currently teaches at the Islamic American University in Santa Clara, and is well-known for his engaging speaking style."

If you go check out the site (http://msa.berkeley.edu) you'll find a series of lectures he did on Surah Fatihah to download.  They are awesome.   :-*

Asalamu alayum,

Once a discussion like this about Br. Suhaib appeared on a board in the UK. He came across it and answered it with the following:

Bismellaahe Rahmaane Raheeem.
Al-Humdulellaah Wa Salatu Wa Salamu Ala Rasulellaah (sallaahu alayhe wa salaam.

Dear brothers and sisters: May Allah bless you all.

I was searching the web and came across this post. After reading it I prayed my Ishaa prayers and asked Allaah to help me answer some of the point brought up.

First, I want to thank Brother Muhammad for his questions reagarding the educational background. Indeed, it is said, "This religion is based on sanad (chains from teacher to teacher). So examine were you take your sanad from." Aslo Allaah (swt) says, "Bring your proof if what you say is the truth." I was happy to find the comment by our Br. or Sr. "He is quick to give fatwa." As Umar said, "May Allaah have mercy on the one who gave me the gift of my mistakes." And the statment of Malik from his Sheikh, "The one who gives a fatwaa about everything is, indeed, crazy." And the statement of Ibn Qayiim, the Student of Ibn Taymiyyaah, "Whoever races to the fatwaa will be raced to the Hell Fire."

Concerning my education background, I always thought it was good not to mention these things as to save on from showoff and the like. However, I can see that this requires and answer so, inshallaah, I will share with my brothers and sisters my history. Although it is nothing, and I am nothing but full of sins. I ask Allaah to forgive me if there is any riyaah in this.

My Back Ground
1. I accepted Islaam in 1992
2. Finished my Degree in Education in 1999
3. Completed half of my deen in 2000
4. Have been blessed with two amazing children, Mashallaah

My studies

I learned the Qur'aan in the Haffs riwayaa from Sheikh Abu Mustafa Ahmad Indiyaa of Senegal. How memorized the Qur'aan at the tender age of 10 taking 14 Qiraat. The Seven Authentic and Seven others of weaker status. He learned from His father Sheikh Muhamad Al-Mamuun in their families Madressa located in St Louis, which has been in their family for around the last 2 hundred years. He learned the standard books of Maliki Fiqh such as Al-Akhdari, Al-Risaalaah, and the Mukhtasar of Khalil from his father as well as other Mashakh there. He also learned and mastered the Ajrumuyaah as a teenager and later finished the Alfiyaa before the age of 14. All praise is to Allaah alone. They obtained their knowledge hundreds of years ago from the people of Shanqeet and have passed it on until today. Al-Humdulellaah the Madraasaa in Senegal has over 500 students with two campuses and is ran by our sheikh of 96 years of age. May Allaah bless him and give him good health.

I learned from him the tajweed in the Haffs form taking a teacher certificate from him in that field. Mashallaaah.

I also, memorized 26 Juzz of Qur'aan on his hand, mashallaah.

I also read a great portion of the Arbaeeen of Nawawiy and memorized those parts on his hand. Mashallaah

I had to memorize the Ajrumiyaah and a greater part of its sharaah al-tufhatuseneyaah, by Allaahs grace taking the teachers certificate. Be Fudlellaaah.

I learned the Lamiyaa on his hand, but was unable to continue. Al-Humdulellaah finished it by Allah’s grace

I studied the hanbali fiqh from Sheikh Salaah al-Rashid of Saudi Arabid, however, the Fiqh was based on the Hadeeth and not Taqleed. Mashallaah

I  studied with Sheikh Mustafaa Tulbaa of Egypt. Trying to finish my Hifh and gain the Ijaaza in the Haffs riwayaa. I am studying Arabic with Sheikh Abdul Warith Saeed of Egypt

I studied  Aqeedah with Sheikh Abdullaah Hamoud of Yemen

I studied Fiqh with Sheikh Salah Sultaan of Egypt

I am reading and memorizing the Bukhari on the Hand of Sheikh Salaah Sultaan. Pray for your brother. Mashallaah (never finished because I moved).

Finishing my memorization with Sh. Alaa of Egypt

Finished the Lamiyaah and working on Qatrunadaa with Sh. Abdurahmaan Al-Dari Ajeb of Somalia

I have tried to learn what I can, because when I became a Muslim I wanted to learn as much as I could. I owe a great deal of my understanding of Islam to the following great scholars, whose writing I drank from as a thirsty man in the desert:

1.      Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyaah
2.      Ibn Tammiyah
3.      Al-Ghazaali
4.      Ibn Qudamah
5.      Ibn Hajir
6.      Sh. Qaradawi
7.      Imaam Al-Banna
8.      Muhamad Al Ghazali
9.      Sh. Bin Uthaymeen
10.      Syed Hawa

May Allah reward them all in the next life.

So this is my humble life. Why would anyone want to know this I will never understand? But, I felt I had to clear up a fitna before it got started.

As per my Aqeedah. Being aware that there are differences amongst the scholars in Aqeedah, especially in regards to Allaah's names and attributes. I found that my heart feels safe and sound on the Aqeedah of the Salaf. That being the Aqeedah of the companions of the Prophet (sa), their students, those who followed them and the four great imaams.

As per my Madhaab. I have been influenced by the Maliki mathaab, however, I was taught by all my teachers to never follow blindly. I am not a Mujtahid, So I must follow the opinon of those who know. However, I try to keep the hadeeth, with the explanation of the scholars as my guide.

As per my group affiliation. I work with all those who work according to the Qur'aan and Sunna. I avoid extremism and try to be with the majority of the Muslims. Yes, I believe that Islam is a movement and I believe that the Islamic Movement is the most crucial aspect that can resolve the current crisis that afflicts our ummah today, therefore I work with MAS,  however I try to work with everyone on the sunnah.

I ask Allaah to bless all of you and reward you for your words.

Subhanakallaahuma wa bihamdikaa ashaadu a laa ilaaaha ila ant.
Astaghfiruka wa a tubu ilaak.

Asalamu alaykum,

Also,  all of brother Suhaib's lectures are free on-line at www.awakeningusa.com. at their Islamic Audio section.  I heard from him that he is planning to do a lecture for each night of Ramadan and have it posted there, inshallaah. Also, he said that all his lectures and Khutbah will be there free for the people. However, the series that he does like The Mothers will not.  I know that he is currently working on the lives of the Khulaphaa finishing Abu Bakr. He told me Abu Bakr is like 12 cds.....I'm pumped for that.....

May Allah assist him in this effort

Imam Suhaib Webb Interview Excerpt

How did you become a Muslim?

I met a Muslim brother in a local Swap Meet and he started giving me dawa. This lasted for a period of three years. He called me to the movement of tawheed and the need for mankind to follow the revelation of Allah and establish the system of Allah in their lives. He explained to me that it was by leaving the way set out by the prophets that mankind had become lost and in a dismal state. So it was on his hand, may Allah reward him, that I became a Muslim in 1992 at the age of 20.

What was your perception of Islam before becoming a Muslim?

As a young person I thought that all Muslims had masters degrees in explosion technology! I really was scared of Muslims until the age of 14. It was at that time that I became aware of Islam through the Hip Hop culture and so forth. I also read a few books here and there and that opened my mind about Islam and Muslim culture. However, I can say that it didn't provide me with the correct understanding of Islam. It just familiarized it to me.

Any advice to people who were born Muslim and the new converts?

For the born Muslims, just remember to never let Islam become a habit. As Muhammad Asaad wrote in his book, The Road to Mecca, "However, when Muslims took their religion as a habit and it ceased to be a program in their daily lives, consciously pursued, then the creative element that was the back bone of their culture waned and they fell into indolence, sterility, and cultural decay." Remember that when Islam becomes a habit, it loses its ability to create and drive a people towards being creative and active. This is not the fault of Islam but the fault of Muslims. We send the active part of Islam to the recycle bin and never try to open it. So, this makes us sterile and inactive May Allah save us.

For those who became Muslim, try your best to learn Islam slowly and take it with a gradual understanding. However, you must understand that Islam is a movement designed to remove the b! ad qualities, false beliefs, and ignorant ideas from your hearts and minds. One of the most important things you can do is to try and learn to read the Qur'aan correctly in the Arabic language. This will lead you to other important things such as the Arabic language itself, among other things. However, remember to take your time. Imam Malik was once told that a man memorized the Mu'aataa (a book of Islamic jurisprudence) in forty days. He responded my saying, "A book that took a sheikh forty years to write he memorized in only forty days? Little he has understood." So remember to take your time and learn gradually.

How can we do better daw'ah in America?

By being sincere, having the correct understanding and sacrificing our loves, hopes, and concerns for this deen. And Allah knows best.

What first got you interested in being a part of "MAS" and working for The Islamic Movement?

I think the main reason was Br. Sheikh Abdul Jalil. He really influenced my understanding of Islaam. He really impressed on me that Islaam must be taken as a whole. Also, I believe that Islam is, was and Will always be a movement. So, for that reason, we must work with our brothers and sisters who are trying to establish this movement in their lives and the lives of others. Allaah say's, "And help each other towards the doing of good and leaving sins." (Surah 5: v.2).

Name a person who has influenced you the most in your life, and describe how they influenced you.

I would say the most influential person in my life is my sheikh and teacher Abu Mustafaa of Senegal. He taught me so many things that I could have never learned on my own.

If you could go back to your youth, what is one thing you would change?

I would change nothing. The reason being that what Allah has done is the best and I have no complaints.

In a sentence or two, please offer today's Muslim youth your most important advice.

Be dutiful to Allah in all situations.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

hmm the Time magazine article.. it was really short.. from what I can remember, it just talked about how Sh. Anwar advised some of the individuals who were said to be responsible for the WTC bombing.. and even in the article it said that he seemed to have done nothing more than be a spiritual advisor for them, and knew nothing about their plans.. but he was put under further investigation.. and after a period of questioning he went overseas, came back, liquidated his assets, and returned over seas.. and they insinuated that this was 'suspicious' behavior and that basically he *must* have been guilty of something if he acted this way..

I'm thinking he was just sick of the harassment, and wanted to shield his family from it..

maybe others who read the article can add more?

may Allah protect our scholars.. ameen

as salaamu alaykum,

Here's the beginning of the article.. the rest of it costs 2.50 to read  ::)

A troubling charge in Congress's joint 9/11 inquiry last month was that the FBI failed to investigate adequately Anwar al-Aulaqi, an American Muslim cleric who ministered to several of the hijackers. The FBI concluded al-Aulaqi was merely a spiritual adviser eager to assist followers, and an FBI official says, " I've heard no [further] interest [at the FBI ] in this guy." But the report quotes an FBI dissenter as saying, " There's a lot of smoke" surrounding his contacts with the hijackers. U.S. officials reportedly want further investigation.

Thanx for the info about Br Suhaib... I wasn't questioning his degrees or knowledge etc.. I really don't like when people do that.. ie what university did he go to, where did he study, who's his teachers are etc etc..  why is it relevant? besides for background knowledge, I think every person has a contribution and we should value that contribution on it's own merit instead of pre-judging something from a person's background and keeping these labels in our head which prevent us from gaining knowledge and increasing our iman from all kinds of sources.

I was just confused when the sister insisted her imam knew him personally and that he went to madina etc etc.. you know.. i think maybe she/imam confused him with sh. Muhammad alShareef  (wish he'd come back on the board) now that i think about it

I started the Mothers of the Believers series and boy am i surprised!!  I thought it was going to be like one of those 'wow look at the wives of the prophet they were such good wives and helpful to their husband and were such good muslims, they prayed and fasted...and some history about their life'.... but this is like about how these women were involved in dawah, politics, education, life and how their lives went beyond "making biryani in the kitchen"... and he sure knows some slang and what the youth are doing these days.. me and se7en were shocked a few times when he says stuff and then started cracking up in the car for a good couple minutes... :-/ good times good times alhamdullah...  will write a review when done inshallah.. for now a very good investment..  he said he did the series for his daughter so when she grew up she could have some examples of how she can contribute to the ummah in dawah!! wow...i wish every imam could get past the 'a good wife prepares good biryani' stage..   ::)

I have listened to about half of the Mothers of the Believers set.. Alhumdulilah its great... but I wish I could be listening to it at home... so I could take notes... but... time doesn't permit that... so I listen to it in my car... I wonder how much I can possibly retain....

I know of brothers who listened to the Lives of the Prophet set and took good notes on it... that must be more beneficial..

I will try to write a review when I'm done listening to it... but I can already tell you that it's worth it.

i've only been to one suhaib webb lecture, it was at isna a couple years ago and mashallah he did a good job, but he was a little, um, loud i guess would be the right word.  i kept thinking, he has a mike, he doesn't need to shout  ::)  but i think he's just really passionate. ;D  but i guess different people respond differently to different kinds of speakers. some people get real pumped up by the passionate, louder speakers. some like the really soft spoken gentle ones.  i go for something in between :-*

my question is, is he "loud" on the cd's as well?  (no disrespect meant here)
