FOB Question - Cowboy?

[slm],

Ok, so how come people call a guy on a horse a cowboy???

The only cowboy I know really, is Laloo Yadav (I wonder if anyone has heard of him, former chief minister of a state called Bihar). He rides on real cows.

Or was it one of the californians trying to drive to albany and instead veering off to texas and like columbus thought this was it?!!!

Here's my thought of this strange phenomenonemonenmem.  The men in the west long ago drove herds of cows using the horsies, but acted childish in doing so hence the name cow-boy.  ::)

Good eh?

Probably because the use cows (Or rather Bulls) in rodeos. Cowboys sound better than Horseboys too I guess :P ;-)

I think it  is because they were herding the cows, using horses because the equines can run faster and cover greater distances than men on foot.

Also if I am not mistaken the words "boy" and "girl (or gal)" are commonly used in some regions/dialects to refer to adult men and women, irritating as that may be to some feminists and anyone with an aspiration towards maturity...  :D

Being a cowboy sounds like thirsty work, time  for an excuse to use my favourite icon:  []

Maybe our friends from Albany and Texas can clarify.

Albany has nothing to do with cowboys.  They're more city slickers.  You wanna see cowboys and cowgirls, come to WA.  My colleague is a cowgirl who married a cowboy.  You'd think we're all into nature here (majority), but there are plenty of cows and horses here.  Sr. Azizah might be a cowgirl, aye? ;)

Good thing you corrected me. I don't really know many people who use that word in their normal parlance, so no idea how its pronounced. I guess I smell curry or something, j/k. Sorry for the mishtake!!!  :D

AYE.......yes she is , but can I still be on the boards   :(    ???    ;)
I was very much into cutting, what you all call moving cows   :D

In the old days, herds roamed the land, once or twice a year men (and women) on horseback would round them up, since the cows were born and roamed wild you couldn't very well walk up to one and say here cowy cowy cowy :D
Some horses that have 'the instinct', (which we say they are cowy) trained will keep a cow right where the cowboys (or cowgirls) wanted it and then they could rope it, grab it, to give it shots, brand it, and if the males (if ya know what I mean   :P  )

Actually it is awesome, cutting and also working cow horse events. Moving cattle where you want them.

But now a'days a jeep works wonders      :o   ;D
Just joking.
(laughing as I type this ) I will show some of the sisters cutting when you all get here if you want.  :o
I'm ask an old cowboy friend of mine how the word cowboy came about.
If I were a betting lady I would bet Muslim's guess was correct, as it seem most logical, but I'll find out.

So which of the sisters coming next year wanna be a cowgirl   :-/
