* Siraj says West’s allegations ‘totally baseless’

Staff Report

PESHAWAR: NWFP Finance Minister Sirajul Haq on Tuesday brushed aside the West’s allegations that the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) government was against women’s education and said that it was one of the priorities of the provincial government in the new budget.

Mr Haq, while addressing a post budget news conference in the Civil Secretariat, said non-development expenditures had been lowered and the government was trying to fulfil the needs of the residents of the province with the limited resources it had. He said a committee had been formed to check the pace of development work during the year.

He lashed out against western propaganda against the MMA which said the religious alliance would impose veils on women and force men to grow beards. “These allegations are totally baseless,” the minister said. Mr Haq said the government had plans to build a women’s university, a medical college and an institution for destitute women in Peshawar. He said they would appoints a female vice chancellor and female staff for the new university.

The minister said the Bank of Khyber would provide loans to the wives of disabled men to help them earn a decent living. He said 2,000 sewing machines would be provided free to widows and 1,000 female teachers would be employed. “We would provide all facilities to women and end their exploitation,” he added. While discussing the allocation for health, Mr Haq said emergency treatment would be provided free in hospitals. He said eight hospitals in the province would be upgraded and developed to minimise the burden on the major hospitals.

The finance minister said the government was concentrating on improving facilities for tourists in the province and was constructing roads to facilitate travel. He said law and order was a major factor affecting tourism and the government had allocated Rs 3 billion in the budget for it.

On agriculture, Mr Haq said a master plan had been designed to build dams and irrigate barren lands. He said a large amount had been allocated for the beautification of Peshawar. He said the government had also discussed the construction of the Torkham-Kabul Road with the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Mr Haq said the government would revive sick industrial units and set up small industries. He said government officials would visit the Gulf and European States to attract investors.

The minister said the MMA government was not against the local government system rather it wanted to strengthen it. He said the local bodies should cooperate with the provincial set up for the betterment of the people living there. He said the MMA government wanted to set up an Islamic, democratic and welfare society which would be free of corruption.

well, where credit is due, it must be given. The MMA have made education mandatory for boys and girls till the 8th grade, a huge step forward considering things before and other areas of pakistan. And they just haven't made it mandatory but it's free.
