I see titles like Ameer and Sheik.
What makes them an Ameer or a Sheik?
How is the title aquired or earned?

Imam's, what makes a person and Imam?
Education? Voted in?

[slm]

Our Ameer is voted in.  He does all of the community stuff like organizing fund raising, education for the kids, etc.

Our Imam was chosen through an application which included a degree of islamic knowledge, etc.  He's from Al-Azhar University in Egypt.  He speaks broken English but is fluent in Arabic though he is Indonesian.  He does the internal affairs like solve argumants or counseling besides leading prayer, and giving khutbah, etc.  He is also involved in organizing things with the Ameer.

We have no Sheikh since no one here is qualififed and we can't afford one.  Our Imam is great.

But along with the Ameer there is a community committee which includes the basic treasurer, secratary, etc.

I hope that answers your question.  Though I know some Imams are just qualified to lead prayer which any man can do.

Ma-asalaama......

[slm] sister Trustworthy, this is very interesting. it means that there are muslim communities that have these ameers, imams & sheikhs.

well, i have lived all these years without an ameer & a sheikh. & wherever i go, i pray behind the imam of the mosque. have i missed something?  i thought he was only for the prayers, nothing beyond. if he is learned enough i might ask him a thing or two. if i need a fatwa, i either read up the relevant discourse, or ask an a'alim (scholar).

but there are better muslims than me who are organised in jamaats (or groups), & they have ameers, etc.

can you tell us some more about how the muslim communities in the US are organised. it seems at least you & sister jannah belong to such communities. & why would you need to pay highly for a sheikh? how is this renumeration determined? What does a sheikh do? i have heard of religious sheikhs. but what  should be his qualifications?

are these communities organised on ethnic or language basis, or on sufi orders, or on what? how far are you bound by the rulings of the sheikhs?

plz dont mind, i am truly trying to understand something that was not in my knowledge.

thanks
