[slm] I could be totally and utterly wrong of course, but aren't you supposed to get the thawab equal of reciting the entire quran from reciting that particular surat?? My mother always says Surah Yaseen is like the heart of the Quran. I apologise if I'm wrong, Allah hu Allam Wasalaam |

[slm] i was hoping that someone like brother bhaloo (brother, plz change it) would answer with a more authentic voice. it is supposed to make it easier for the soul (ruh) to leave the body. there is a Hadith that says something like "you should recite it near your departed (or departing) souls." but some have questioned the authenticity of this Hadith. at the time of death, there is great thirst. my mother says honey dissolved in zamzam water at that time should quench the thirst. |

[slm] May want to ask someone knowledgeable in your local area, insha'Allah. ---------------------------------------------- Question: Asslamua Alylum, In my culture people read sura Yaseen in groups before and after people die. I would like to know if whether this is based on suna or an innovation? Answer: Praise be to Allaah. We have to make a distinction here between the two issues: reading Yaa-Seen for one who is dying, and reading it for one who has died. With regard to reading Yaa-Seen for one who is dying, this practice has been reported from some of the Sahaabah. Imaam Ahmad reported in his Musnad from Safwaan: "My shaykhs told me that they were with Ghudayf ibn al-Haarith al-Thumaani when he was dying. He said: `Can any of you read Yaa-Seen?' So Saalih ibn Shurayh al-Sakooni recited it, and when he reached the fortieth aayah, Ghudayf passed away. My shaykhs used to say that when it is recited in the presence of one who is dying, it eases the pain of death." That was the opinion of Safwaan. `Eesaa ibn al-Mu'tamir read it for Ibn Mab'ad (when the latter was dying). (al-Musnad, 16355) Al-Albaani said in Irwaa' al-Ghaleel, 3/152: "This is a saheeh sanad going back to Ghudayf ibn al-Haarith, may Allaah be pleased with him. Its men are thiqaat apart from `the shaykhs' who are not named and are therefore unknown (majhool). But the fact that they are unknown is compensated for by their large number, especially since they are of the generation of the Taabi'een." Shaykh Ibn `Uthaymeen said in al-Sharh al-Mumti' fi Ahkaam al-Janaa'iz: "Soorat Yaa-Seen may be recited over him (i.e., the one who is dying) for the one who thinks that the hadeeth is correct." He explained that this is because this soorah contains good news of Paradise, as in the aayah (interpretation of the meaning): "It was said: `Enter Paradise.'." [Yaa-Seen 36:26], and because it makes the passage of the soul easier, and other reasons. As regards reading Soorat Yaa-Seen for one who has died, there is no saheeh hadeeth to indicate that this should be done. A hadeeth was narrated by Abu Dawood and others which says "Read Yaa-Seen over your dead", but this hadeeth is not saheeh because its isnaad contains contradictions and narrators who are unknown (majhool). This was stated by al-`Allaamah al-Albaani in Irwaa' al-Ghaleel, hadeeth no. 688. Reading Qur'aan over the dead is considered to be bid'ah (innovation), as he states at the end of his book Ahkaam al-Janaa'iz. Some people think that it should be read forty times over the deceased, and some of them may distribute copies of the Qur'aan among the mourners who gather to offer condolences so that they may read, or organize gatherings in the mosque to read it for the soul of the deceased. All of this has no basis whatsoever (in the sunnah), and these are innovated deeds of bid'ah which we should avoid and warn others against. And Allaah is the Source of strength. [slm] Sister Sofia is right. It is bid'aa to read Yaseen to remember those who have past away. I live in Malaysia, where it is considered that it is almost obligatory to read to the dying or to dedicate to those who have past away. Alhamdulillah, after re-discovering Islam, I know that is bid'aah [innovation], because the Qur'an is for the living, a guidance from Allah to mankind on what to believe, and how to conduct oneself. How could the qur'an possibly benefit the dead? The only way to help the dead is to du'a [supplicate]. This I learnt from my egyptian lady teacher who teaches qur'an tasfeer and considers herself to follow the Shafi'ee school. Plus, my salafi sunnah male teacher purports the same view. Alhamdulillah, for Allah guiding me to the straight path with benefitting knowledge. |

[slm] I thought I would add something I found on Islam Online...sorry bismilla for the late reply sis:) http://www.islam-online.net/fatwaapplication/english/display.asp?hFatwaID=106727 Does Reading Surat Yaseen Benefit the Dead? Question Dear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum. I am a Sunni follower of the Islamic faith. I’m not a Sufi and I want to ask whether reading Surat Yaseen benefits a dead person? Jazakum Allah khayran. Date 30/Oct/2003 Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Kutty Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger. Dear brother in Islam, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake. It goes without saying that showing kindness towards one's parents is one of the main duties upon man. Allah Almighty says: “Thy Lord has decreed, that you worship none save Him, and (that you show) kindness to parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age with thee, say not ‘Fie’ unto them nor repulse them, but speak unto them a gracious word.” (Al-Isra’: 23) However, dutifulness to parents extends beyond their death and continues as long as we live. Therefore, one should supplicate and do other acts that benefit the dead as much as possible for his parents after their death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, "When a son of Adam passes away, he is cut off from his deeds except for three things: a current or perpetual charity, good knowledge that benefits someone, and a good child who makes du`a' (supplication) for him." In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states: “It is best that we refrain from calling names and stigmatizing people based on their theological or spiritual inclinations; we should be open towards all Muslims and develop tolerant attitudes. Now coming to your question; it is the view of the majority of Muslims, including the scholars of jurisprudence and Hadith, that we are allowed to read the Qur’an on our own volition and donate the rewards for the dead parents or relatives or friends. If we do so, Allah being generous, we believe He will not refuse to send such rewards to them. Therefore, you may read any part of the Qur’an and pray to Allah to send rewards for any of your dead parents, relatives, or friends you may wish. Since Yaseen is an important surah of the Qur’an and is often referred to as the heart of the Qur’an, there is no reason to exempt it. There is also a report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which states, “Read Yaseen on your dead ones!” Although some scholars take this hadith to mean that it refers to the time of dying as opposed to the time after death, there is no need to stop anyone from reading it even if we were to accept the above interpretation. Having said this, however, I must hasten to add the following: Reading Qur’an in return for payment for this purpose is considered a bid`ah (innovation). Likewise, it is also wrong to consider this as part of prescribed Islamic funerals.” Excerpted, with slight modifications, from: www.muslims.ca You can also read: Acts that Benefit the Dead http://www.islamonline.net/fatwa/english/FatwaDisplay.asp?hFatwaID=41136 Importance and Virtues of Surat Yaseen http://www.islamonline.net/fatwa/english/FatwaDisplay.asp?hFatwaID=77705 Sending Reward of Good Deeds to the Deceased http://www.islamonline.net/fatwa/english/FatwaDisplay.asp?hFatwaID=83953 Performing Hajj on behalf of Deceased Relatives http://www.islamonline.net/fatwa/english/FatwaDisplay.asp?hFatwaID=6694 Dutifulness to Dead Parents http://www.islamonline.net/fatwa/english/FatwaDisplay.asp?hFatwaID=94148 Allah Almighty knows best. |
