I was wishin I was back home in Toronto the whole time the lights were off. They came back on aroun 2 am in the morning here, out since maybe 4:40 pm. I want to know went on back home soo much, I know the power isnt even fully restored there yet.

You know why this happened righhht :o It's because we have those 2 big bad nuclear power plants, and they've been down for maintenance for a year and a half because the foolish provincial government decided to put the project on hold. I never badmout people but I'm tempted right nah ::)

Anyway I'm also finna fin out wha happened to people in other places where the lights went out. Tell us your stories ;D

The power went out at 4:30 pm yesterday over here in NY, and returned this morning at 10:45 am in my area.  My whole neighbood stayed up late last night, sitting outside where it was cooler.   Bags were ice were given out for free at the grocery store.  With all the candles lit and no computer or tv to watch, it felt like we were back in the late 1800's.   :D

Our power just came on at 2pm, so thats about 22 hours of no power, alhamdulilah other then the not being able to cook, and not use the fans it wasn't that bad.  Just felt bad for ibby.
Deen, does this mean were going to lose the power again?
i think most of the food in our fridge is probably spoiled, and the meat in the freezer thawed. gonna have to do alot of cooking today  :)
Me and ibby were on the way to the grocery store when the lights went out, so we did our shopping in the dark.  then when we walked back to our apt. building, i was like, hmm...how do i get the stroller, ibby, and the groceries up to the apt.  alhamdulilah a girl offered to help, then a husband and wife came and asked what floor, there like oh, 2nd floor, thats not bad, so the guy carried the stroller with the baby and the groceries all together up the stairs, the kindness of strangers, alhamdulilah  :)

[slm] i first experienced a blackout during the Zia era. my children were young & they cried & cried.

i said to myself: this is a third world country, once a facility gets disturbed, it stays disturbed for life. Next morning i discussed the problem at work. Turned out a PhD student in Germany & his wife had their electricty cut off by the power company for non-payment of bills. So, they bought a 12-volt battery, bulb, a dynamo (the contraption that used to be attached to the rear wheel of a bicycle & ran the bulbs on these), & an old one-wheeled cycle. The husband would pedal for one hour, while the wife for another, & they had enough electricity stored in their battery for a day.

that evening i went & bought a 12 volt fan (used in cars), a 12 volt bulb holder, a bulb, & a 12-volt old but functional car-battery, & a charger (i wasn't going to pedal for an hour in the heat). The coming night, i had the bulb on, & the fan moving when the electrictiy ppl switched off our power.

my children slept like the babies that they were.

over the months, i added more bulbs, more fans, & of course it meant wires visible to the naked eye. i was never a beautician, so my work is rather crude, & it irks the female eye, so you can imagine what i had to hear from my wife off & on.

but i had a house with light & fans & exhausts even during blackouts. & to me it was that which mattered. ppl came to my house to see the contraption, & some copied the idea. (u can do the same. not patented  :)).

after a few years, when everyone understood that power outages are here to stay, "inverters" came on the market. actually i helped a friend develop it, but he was a genius, he could not keep his mind on the product as it was. He was always after getting the perfect sine wave.  & i am zero at electronics. So, while he looked for perfection, others would come & ask him about his ideas. Soon they marketed a product, then its improved version, & then further improvement. I gave up on my partnership in this venture.

The moral: if something is inevitably going to break down, at least then use your brain for an alternative.

Now imagine the times of Prophet Muhammad (saw) when they didn't use to have electricity at all, and imagine living in deserts in peak summer time without electricity, no high speed electric fans, air conditioners etc. Even today, back in Pakistan and India and other similar poor third world countries, majority people live without electricity in remote areas and villages. Many die due to heat in summer. Reminds me of the oft-repeated verse in Surah Rahman:

Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

Wassalam.

[wlm] wr wb :)

There's a day in the 70s... when the whole of Singapore experienced black out.

That was on the day that I was born.

Good luck, people! :  :-* Enjoy darkness... for the light will be sweet, when it comes on :)

P.S. Talking about babies, and hospitals.. I wonder wot happened to those with respiratory machines, or those having operations, when the lights went out, up in the East Coast? ... and Ottawa :P

No need a worry, hospitals all have backup generators. ;D
