I've been doing the web serch but was wondering if any sisters are really into and knowledgable about herbs?

Is there a fast acting (as it doesn't take days of use) to be effective for calming ones nerves down? In very very stressful    >:(   'and'  hormonal times     :'(   like when the two are at the same time   :o
Herbal teas or capsels?

I'm not very knowledgeable I;m afraid but I found that St Johns Wort for 2 weeks before "you know when" helps to relieve the hormonal stress.

Another sis recommended scullcap for instant stress relief, it didn;t really help me that much but may work for you.

I prefer tablets to either teas or capsule - the dosage is more precise (follow instructions on the bottle), and you avoid the gelatin issue.

Try asking the folks in the herbal store, they are often quite knowledgeable. They also have tablets that are blends of herbs for stress etc.

Hope this helps a little in sha Allah.

:-)

From what I learned in school and was instructed to tell patients, was to be weary of herbal supplements right now... The FDA doesn't regulate the supplement industry; when tested, some of these supplements don't have what they claim to have present or may have too much in quantity.  Also a lot of these claims supplements make  haven't been tested to see if they are legit!  Many supplements have contraindications and ppl that have certain diseases (such as liver disease, for example), or women who are pregnant, the elderly should really really be careful---some can cause death, spontaneous abortion, irreversible bodily damage.   :o

Dont mean to scare you, but just be cautious.   :-*  You may want to consult with a physician before starting any regimen for their opinion.

As for calming nerves down--maybe some yoga can help?  Ive heard a lot of ppl rave bout that helping out their stress levels.   :-*   Or maybe a nice soothing cup of tea?  Or just good ol' chocolate?   ;D

Hope that helps!!

I'm not really knowledgeable about herbs. But I've found that chamomile & vanilla help. I don't know about using these for tea ??? But the chamomile and vanilla are really good for aromatherapy, it can be done any time. You could get 1 of the litte boiler pots or something and turn it on overnight so that it relaxes u. And rasberry is a good tea for relaxing. But the aromathrapy is a tried and true method.  :)  InshaAllah this helps ;D ;D ;D

Just a precaution don't drink raspberry leaf tea if you're pregnant until you hit week 36, it's supposed to encourage labour, although it also helps sickness.

try wild yam cream ( i know -- sounds wierd, but what herbal stuff doesn't?!?) during the "hormonal" times. it is supposed to work wonders!!! you basically just rub it in at certain places on your body -- usually the inside of the wrists, but follow the instructions on the packaging. and the bonus with this is, you are not ingesting it, so-to-speak, so maybe there is less risk.

I'm glad this topic came up, I've been so stressed out the last couple of months around 'that time' and I feel bad for my fiance who has to deal with me!  :( The poor man...And then that makes me even more upset, and then I just end up an emotional mess  :'(
I think I'll try the chamomile, I actually have that kind of tea. I'd forgotten about it till now.. :-[
Where would you get the wild yam cream? At a natural foods store? Or is it hard to find? I've never heard of it before

I've been reading a lot and have learned a lot.
Herbs are great but like Sister Ruh mentioned one does have to be careful. There is soooooo much on the internet and I found a herbal PDR   :)
Like a drug RX PDR that pharmacist (chemist) have, it is a huge book with what herbs help for what and their recommneded doses, what not to mix things with, cautions, etc.

It was like 49.00 at Costco

I have been learning about different processing methods and how even the way an herb is processed effects it's potiency.

I was such a mess this past week, stressing over business, real estate and more and then add the hormones to it and   >:(    :'(    >:(    :'(
talk about split personality   :D

Thank you all for the suggestions, may be cool to keep this thread going and see what we all can learn. I much prefer natural stuff to meds and such.

I drink a mixture of chamomile and decaf green teas, 2 teabags each in a tea pot and left to steep for 10 minutes.  Then I sip on it til it's gone.  It helps my menopause symptoms including the inability to sleep some nights.  I also use St. John's Wort and Valerian root capsules.  I hate to take the prescription horomone replacement therapies so I go herbal.
