[slm] everyone, My question is, is it ok to take cough syrup/medicine stuff that has alcohol in it? I've had a sore throat and a cough and the only stuff that seems to help is the Nyquil Cough syrup, but it has alcohol in it, so I've been reluctant to take it, would it be ok? Since it's not like I'm drinking it for the alcohol..I would try something else, but we have that at home, and I know it works for my cough. Or is it a definate no because of the alcohol in it? |

[slm] My advice is to heed the hadeeth which says to leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt. I think there are different PoVs on medicines containing alcohol, but so long as there are alternatives and it's not a major health crisis, look for something alcohol free. Can you get the "Traditional Medicinals" herb teas where you are? they have them for various health probs, including coughs and colds. I find they are very good, especially if you add honey and drink them hot - the heat soothes the throat and they taste yummy too. (A blistering curry also soothes the throat - or maybe cauterizes the tonsils? - and clears the old sinuses too. Ask me how I know :D) Hope you feel better soon in sha Allah. :-) |

[slm], There are alcohol free cough syrups too. There is a version of Robitussin that comes alcohol free. Honey is good for coughs as well. |

[slm] missy What really works for me is just a simple honey and lemon drink. Boil some water in a kettle and put at leasr a tablespoon of honey and a table spoon of lemon juice into a mug/cup. Then once the water has boiled, add it to the mug and stir so that the honey dissoves to a liquid consistincy. You can add sugar if you wish but I don't because honey is already very sweet. This works for me everytime and isnt expensive. Hope you get better inshallah. ;D |

[slm] Have you tried Liquorice roots? They're really good for the cough especially when you're trying really hard not to cough and your throat itches and your eyes water. what you do is peel a bit of the outer layer of the root, cut a bit off and then chew until there's no flavour left. After that, you spit it out. hope that helps Inshallah. wassalam |
