Tell us about your country!!!

I thought of doing this thread after reading Chiq's post
which she changed and I don't know why cause it was fine
the way it first was.    ;)

Anyway, how about some of you tell us about your home country, Please.
What is it like, desert, mountains, hot, cool, what are the people like, what kinds of foods, anything you'd like to share.   :)

What makes you homesick?    :'(

I've always wanted to visit other countries, and I'm sure others do too.
Maybe you can take us on a little trip through your country via a post.

And even if someone posts who is also from your country, please post anyway as different people see different things in the same place.

I changed it because it wasn’t ready. Someone once advised me:

“An individual who offers another his opinion without thinking first, or seeks to describe a feeling before he knows truly what it is, is an individual who does another a disservice and discourtesy. Why should your confusion become another’s, whose own may already be bad enough? Why should you ask another to think for you when, by doing so, you demonstrate that you are not ready for the thoughts he may provide? Laziness is as much a destroyer of communication between people as the fear of truth, and since they usually go hand in hand with one another, conversations die many deaths.”

Hard on my ego, but invaluable counsel as I have since discovered ;D

I had intended to write some reflections on the trip (although I had not intended to post them), since I learned much and writing helps me resolve the tangled webs of thought life throws at me. But on return to England I found my heart frail and my spirit sorrowful to the point of bleak despair, and this is no state to talk or write in. So I am going into retreat for a while, to understand what it is that is troubling me, put it in its proper place, and move on. Then I will be ready to speak of my beloved homeland once more inshallah :) Meanwhile I lurk and await the writings of our talented Madinites – perchance the borrowed memories they weave will return in these dark times to remind me of life’s beauty once more, which I have forgotten for now.

Pray for me.

my country......> Green...lots of rivers....some mountain....some nice ppl...ok food... not so modernized...not worth living...blah blah blah ...

what i worte above is what many of my friends and other family members think about my country.

but to me, i love my country...so, from a loving and affectionate view...my country is full of friendly neighbors...and beutiful beyond words!!

where i live there's a big river...with fairly nice beach...i used to swim there untill i get tired...run around the beach...play with my friends and cousins...
in the morning its sooo nice...the air itself is so different, very refreshing...and as if some kind of sweetness linger there.  do u know what i mean?

and the sky sometime seem so blue and sometime as if someone painted with some perfectly shaped clouds here and there...

and the land is greeeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnnnn....beautifully green...full of gardens here and there...and the green fields are dancing with the sweet winds...

and when it rains (at Monsoon) its even more beautiful...the sounds of rain makes beutiful songs... rim zimm rim zim...room zoom room zoom...barsa ki barishne...poolone kiya kehdia....

anyway...i hope i gave a picture of how wonderful it is...but thats just i think...i know many ppl don't like the country...maybe because of love you think differently...it depens on you how you see your country is...just my opinion...

[slm] thanks brother Nomi for this trust, but I have some reservations about myself:

1st:  i have been more of an internationalist than a nationalist.
2nd: i believe in:
har mulk mulke ma ast keh mulke Khudai maa ast
{every land (country) belongs to me because Allah's land belongs to me} ie as a muslim

3rd: what exactly is my country? I was born in India, although my family adopted this as their country soon after I was born. At school I learnt more about European & particularly English history than about Pakistan. Although I carried a Pakistani passport, I had the right to vote in Englnd before i had it in Pakistan, which was very strange. & when I pointed it out to the British, they looked blank & still insisted that I had this right. It was very confusing for me, so I decided to take on their nationality as well.

This made me so excited that I thought of collecting nationalities like ppl collect postage stamps. So, I went over to Canada to qualify for their citizenship. Fortunately for the world, & particularly for the US, it was winter, & it was so cold I came away. Otherwise the Guiness book of records would have a person who spent his life collecting nationalities. It was fortunate for the US, because I stopped at NY, & asked myself: should I go south west to my dream "sunny California", or to cold & damp England. Sorry to say this to our "American" hosts here, but I did not think their English was the proper one, so California lost & England won.

Oh, & before i forget, i spent my mid & late teens in East Pakistan which decided to become another country. So, I wouldn't know whether to include it or not.

did all this make sense to you? if it didn't, then i have succeeded in conveying some of my confusion to you. :D

there are many fellow Pakistanis on board, let all of you do the Pakistan bit. i will add my tuppence worth (actually i can say two cents here, coz now the world is almost americanized: note the zee in 'americanized' instead of the British 'americanised').

Then perhaps sister azizah can introduce another topic about cities/ towns/ villages you have lived in. That may not be confusing, i hope.

[slm] when my plane dropped some height, the greenery was visible all over, & i was so happy & said to myself: "ah! home at last". I was coming in from UK. First stop Karachi. Then Dacca, from where I will take a train to Chittagong. That was August/ September 1970. As I looked at the ppl there, my heart sank, so much poverty!

Come May 1971: I was on a ship with my mother, sisters & younger brother, leaving the other brothers behind. They would later spend more than a year at Teknaf in Burma, in a refugee camp.

I thought both Karachi & Chittagong were my homes, but now it was clear that at least East Pakistan wasn't. I haven't been back since, although my classmates did manage to search me out after more than 30 years.

Dec 1971: I was back in the UK, & I now thought I never had, nor will ever have, nor should I ever desire to have, a home in this world. I was also "nauzobillah" angry with Allah. may Allah forgive me.

For many, many years: I called my generation "the lost generation".

[slm] sister IMuslim_4Ever, it looks like this will become an autobiography.

yes, i have seen Sylhet, but only for  a few days. I went with my classmates to visit the Fenchuganj Fertiliser Factory. ....... We stayed at the Government College, & we had their daal (lentils), which was very spicy, & that did not bother me because my mother put even more spices in her salan than anyone else.

yes Sylhet is beautiful, with its hills, & springs. I loved it. So is Chittagong. ah! Rangamati. Why Rangamati?

my friends who understand Urdu & Punjabi. Rang = color, mati = matti = earth. Rangamati has colorful earth, due to mineral deposits.

200 mile stretch of unspoilt beach (Cox's Bazaar). Karnafuli Dam. We had many picnics around Chittagong. & the city was dominated by a central hill, called the DC's Hill. The deputy Commisioner lived atop that in his mansion. Yes I loved Chittagong. & I loved Dhaka University, & I thought it was home. but it turned out it was not. why not? you asked.

sis, u did not use ur head. Look at my previous post again. The period of my return: August 1970 to May 1971. does the period ring a bell? & that i was on ship. Guess what was i doing there. then the hint: my brothers spent more than a year at Teknaf, Burma, in a refugee camp. When I reached Chittagong, at first I was aware of strangely hostile glances, that i had never seen before. We lived in a compound of Ismaili families.  we were the non-Ismaili ones. Each family had a rented house. So had we.  Nothing untoward where we lived. However, as soon as we got out of the compound, the hostile glances. My brother told me they had been receiving threats (from the Awami League walas).

my world had changed for the worse once again.

***
Karachi & Chittagong that is where we alternated. Schooling mostly at karachi. at Chittagong I went only for a year at the best school. my English was good, & my schoolmates insisted on me speaking English with them.

Result: me no speak Bangla Bhasha. My friends: they improve their English. same with my other family members.

Bengal is beautiful, i think everyone is a poet. I am not. I just enjoy poetry. & the national flower is "motia', is it not?

I remember the houses we rented. Always brick houses, with concrete roofs. but very near us would be dwellings with thatched-bamboo walls & roofs. Once the dwellings caught fire. We helped, but a lot of those were burnt to ashes.

i went to College at Chittagong. College days are the best. No one knows what u r doing. u can bunk class, & ur friends will put in a proxy for u. The class is big enough, & although i was well-known, the professors gave me a lot of leeway. I had always been the darling of my alma maters. although two of my teachers were annoyed enough to ask me never to attend their class, & they consented to fill in my attendance. It was great. I was free to do as I pleased, while the register showed my attendance.

So, I have this tendency to break rules, & the administration looks the other way. Like in this Medinatul Muslimeen I am about to break the 5-posts a day rule, but i hope my luck will work again, & I won't get the dreaded Madina message that brings heart-attacks. joking, it is a 35-post a week rule.

sis jannah if u r reading this, u have not yet given us a sample of such messages.

After passing intermediate, I went to fufill my dream: Honours in Chemistry, then ...... At Dhaka, the professors thought i was a genius. i thought the same. When i topped at University, i regarded it as a normal event. Of course, i had to top, who else could, when i was present?

that is arrogance. & Allah gave me a shock to knock some sense into me. The doctors' finding that my eyes had at best only 6 months of vision. i have already told what i did, & how Allah gave me another chance. & that chance was in the form of a new life, of suspension of the sentence to loss of sight, & of a scholarship to the UK in another subject, which i earned in an open competition, so i still thought that i was better than everyone despite my handicap. Satan never leaves one alone.

After finishing my degree, i came back. & the return has been described.

***
Why were the Awami League walas threatening us? I guess: nationalism, jealousy, i don't know. I have never felt such negative things even in the worst of circumstances. A lot of -isms were imported from Europe, & they become religion with ppl, as did sectarian divisions. When the Awami League announced independence, i was there. Control of the city was taken over by the AL people. They went around, asking for money, arresting some, who would never return. One day the mob came to our house, with an AL Hindu in the lead. He insisted that we had a gun & he had seen it shine in the sunlight out of the window. The landlord came running. He was afraid that his property would be burnt by the mob. Anyway the misunderstanding was settled, but the mob leaders did not look as if they would leave us alone.

Then the army came, & I have described in a previous post about a soldier & me. & we got to learn of the AL atrocities at the Circuit House. As soon as some order was restored, i was asked by my brothers to take the females & my younger brother to the safety of West Pakistan. Thats why i was on that ship i described in my previous post.

Later, we learnt that one of the Ismaili girls who was studying at the Medical College, was abducted & never heard of again. The father, until a few years ago, was seen searching for her. He has lost his mind. Many girls were reported being sold in Calcutta. I was in the UK at the time all this happened. This has been repeated in Afghanistan, this time the girls sold were relatives of the Arabs slaughtered in Afghanistan.

It is a beautiful at the same time a scary world. Now u know why East Pakistan was no longer my home. whenever I think highly of myself, or wanted to call a place my home, i have had to move, except for the last 25 years, that i have spent in one town, & that is probably my wife's luck. Or mine, in being given such a wife.

My home is in Firdawse a`alaa, inshaAllah.

The world has changed again for the worse for the Muslims. Why? coz they have become world-oriented. Why does the world change in a negative direction? so that we know our abode is Heaven, not this world. We should use the resources of this world, but we should build our palaces in Firdawse a`alaa.

This was supposed to be a thread for description of one's country, but it has turned an autobiography, so i have edited it a bit to reduce unnecessary details. i will describe my country in another post, but that will take some time to put together.

***
sister, u posted a reply to the sister who said "i am not paki enough for .......", & u expressed surprise that why should that matter. yes it should not matter, but we are living in jahilliya, & it is our duty to illuminate the world. u also said this is why u r scared of marriage. don't be scared. Read my reply to HiMY on his decision not to marry.

Here is a link to a site from which u can download Islamic pdf files.

http://sultan.org/books/

One very important file is a book of authentic supplications, called "Hasn-ul-Muslim". There are duas for fajr & Maghrib, for protection. Do not miss them, at least the ayatul kursi & the last three surahs. & the dua for travel.

incidentally, my luck has held again, it is now 18th Aug in medina, & this post is my 1st one on this date.

you said:
you know i feel lost sometime... here, i feel like i dont' belong... and when i went over there (bangladesh), i felt like i don't belong there...cuz things changed...ppl, my childhood ppl, changed...everything changed...the way the world (for me) was changed...  and i am not sure if i have a country anymore ...i feel like i am a person without a place that i can call home...weird...
This is a very important topic. & i will try to think & tell u something, but why don't you think about it some more & make it anto a separate topic, about why u feel this way.

may Allah (swt) protect all of us, & may HE help the Ummah overcome its slumber & slavery. & may HE give us the best in both worlds.

19-85.  The day We shall gather the righteous to (God) Most Gracious,  like a band presented before a king for honours.

In a Hadeeth talking about paradise, prophet Mohammed(pbuh) says: "Allah Almighty has said, I've prepared for my pious servants what no eye have ever seen and no ear have ever heard and has not occured on the mind of any human" (Muslim)

It's jusy AWESOME, MARVELOUS, GREAT......... !

It's eternal, full of pleasure, full of happiness, no ill feelings, no hate, no sadness, no believer will turn his back to another, all will be facing eachother, and yes we will get to see those who died with us if we were to go there with Allah's mercy insha'Allah, we will get to see HIM(SWT),  afterall it's HE who said,

75-23.  Looking towards their Lord.

this will be the ultimate reward for those who have been pious in this life, to see Allah, their creator, the ONE whom they believed in without seeing, the ONE whom they knew was there even though out of their human sight.

Allah also said,

57-12.  One Day shalt thou see the believing men and the believing women- how their Light runs forward before them and by their right hands: (their greeting will be): "Good News for you this Day! Gardens beneath which flow rivers! to dwell therein for aye! This is indeed the highest Achievement!"

YES INDEED IT IS THE HIGHEST ACHIEVEMENT, MAY ALLAH GRANT US HEAVEN WITH HIS MERCY AND GUIDE US ALL TO THE RIGHT PATH.

Well, i really don't have one specific country, but I guess my origin is Pakistan. My parents are from there, but I have never actually lived there, just visit once in a while. I was born in Kuwait, lived in Saudi Arabia for about 13 years on and off, because my parents used to send me to USA to study. Never been in the same school for more then 1 year. Then at age 13 we moved to USA, and have been living here ever since. Never finished college :'( because some lunatic started following me around and stalking me so my parents got scared and took me out of college and married me off :'( So now I am a housewife and mother of 2 beautiful children. They are my whole world now :-*

Pakistan is a beautiful place, been to muree and Naraan, Kaghaan, Jheel saif ul malook, beautiful places!  I will try to find a pic of saif ul malook and post it here, it is sooo beautiful. The food in Pakistan is amazing.  And mangos, ohh they are just heavenly. And they have this one soda there called Pakola, oh yumm, I love that. Anyone else ever had Pakola? It is also called ice cream soda i think. Ok, I will let other people add more now. Take care

Just to emphasize that Bangladesh is not India.  Sri Lanka is not India either.  Yeah.  I found that out the hard way.  A manager of a different division decided to put me in his lowest form of their Caste system after I politely asked how his daughters were doing in India.  He never spoke to me again.  Said I was not worthy of his status even though I apologized.  Eh...oh well.  That's one less man I gotsta worry bout.

So my country.  Huh?  Hmmm...I was raised in Troy, NY.  Beautiful city it is.  Nice ppl.  Beuatiful terrain.  Close to schools and freinds.  Close to Masjids. Hot Summers.  Freezing winters.  Awesome Autumns  Fresh Spring.  Miss it.

Olympa, WA.  Heh?  What can I say.  It rains 90% of the time and the seasons never change.  The beaches are cold.  But the scenery is wonderous.  Evergreens and trees everywhere.  Mountains full of life.  When the weather is nice, that's the best.  Ppl here are extremely freindly.  Even the rednecks and hillbillies, hippies and all.  Very rare do you meet someone prejudice.  Ppl here are into nature and coffee.  There's a coffee place or Espresso stand every 2 blocks.  It's ok.

Country?  Hmm...?  Cambodia.  Before the war...according to the family was a great tropical blast.  Playing in the moonlight.  Climbing the tropical fruit trees.  Fresh mangoes and such.  We were one the richest families with land and livestock so life was superb.  However, after the war, it sucks to live there now.  I never knew it and I plan on visiting one day cause Mom misses it.  I don't miss it cause I never knew it.

I miss Mecca/Medinah though.

Well...that was trip down memory lane.  Thanks.

Where did you pick that up from? I know that the state of Kerala is sometimes called that, thats what Kerala means, if I am not wrong.

Anyhow, my Des/watan/country is India/Hindustan/Bharat.
Sare Jahan se accha hindositan hamara,
bulbulein hain hum iski, ye gulistan hamara....  ;)

The best thing about my country I like is mangoes (Aam ke aam, guthlion ke daam). I wouldn't be surprised if the mangoes grown in my area (Bihar) are the best tasting of anywhere in the world. I was trying to get a box here, but the customs guys said, "Prohibited"!!!.

Anyhow, there is a poem by Allama Iqbal about the country, if anyone can translate it.

There are other things I like about it like, how many amazing people I have met all over the country, people who work so hard for so little, yet are able to keep their sense of humor, particularly some of the muslims I have met. Its amazing how their iman gets even stronger the more people try to oppress them. I used to,and still doubt people who say "Islam will rise from America", I think it will rise from some of the poorest of nations, where people are able and willing to sacrifice and where shaitan has not yet had an opportunity to dangle in front of them an easy and comfortable life, where people can listen to what their leaders say and act on it.

You are from Idaho, right?

I am from Karachi, a southern city of Pakistan. Let me give you a native's perspective, a bit outdated as I have not visited home in two years. Just to serve as a reference, Pakistan is VERY similar in ALL aspects to their well known eastern neighbor, India. I'll keep it short and sweet, inshallah.

Country
-------
Pakistan, casually means land of the pure.

Government
----------
Parliamnentary democracy (British/Indian style).

Provinces
---------
We don't have states, we have provinces instead. Unlike the state govts in USA, the provincial govts are not very independent, but they are somewhat autonomous. Provinces have their own elected legislature.

Provinces by population: Punjab, Sindh, NWFP, and Baluchistan

Provinces by land mass: Baluchistan, Punjab, Sindh, and NWFP

There is also the disputed area of Kashmir. Its a favorite tourist destination because of its lush green valleys and mountain lakes. But lets keep Kashmir out of this short article.

Languages
--------------
Urdu (official), Punjabi, Saraiki, Sindhi, Pashto, Baluchi, Hindko, Brahwi,  and many more (around 50 if I recollect correctly). Languages usually correspond roughly to ethinicity as well. English is also well understood.

Major Cities
------------
Islamabad: State Capitol. A planned city built on top of hills, which is pleasent to visit. Its in the north.

Karachi: Think Sao Paolo, or any other teeming third world megapolis. Its a port city and the financial capitol. The weather is awful and the environment is VERY polluted. Capital of Sindh.

Lahore: Part village, part city. Its the defacto cultural capital. Capital of Punjab.

Quetta and Peshawar: Largest cities and provincial capitals of Baluchistan and NWFP respectively.

Population
----------
140 million (conservative estimate) and growing. We don't believe in population control and thus have the HIGHEST population growth rate in the region (maybe the highest in the world). We rank somewhere up there in the top ten.

Location and geography
----------------------
India on the east, afghanistan on the west, indian ocean on the south, iran on the south-west, china on the north. Baluchistan shares borders with afghanistan, iran, and the indian ocean. NWFP has a border common with Afghanistan. Punjab is next to India. And Sindh shares its borders with the Indian ocean and India.

Economy and Technology
----------------------------
Economy is mostly agriculture based. Wheat, cotton, lentils, the worlds best basmati rice, livestock, etc. But we DO make cars, heavy machinery, ordnance, naval vessels, etc, even a small trainer jet. A small but growijg IT sector is also there.

Transportation
--------------
YES, we have roads, railways, and air transport. There is even a 400km (?) freeway (motor way) from Islamabad to Lahore. Think India, not namibia.

History
-------
Part of British India before 1947, became independant with two wings. The partition was VERY painful, millions died in the ensuing rioting and millions more became homeless due to migration. The east wing seceded in 1971 after a brutal civil war to become independent Bangladesh. The ideology of the partition was based on religion, Muslim (not Islamic) Paksitan and secular India.

Climate
-------
Varies like California. Baluchistan is HOT and dry, much like arizona, but hotter. The border with India has a huge desert called cholistan. Sindh is somewhat like Southern California. Its quite hot but the economy is agriculture based. Punjab is the bread basket of Pakistan. NWFP is part green, and part like Afghansitan. All the arid areas are rich in minerals, oil, and natural gas. Btw, hot means 40+ Celsius, temperature which most foreigners can't tolerate. The weather is TOUGH. Most visistors have a hard time with upset stomachs and viral/bacterial infections. Nothing fatal though. Pollution is also a fast growing problem, thanks to borrowed western technology. The pollution in LA pales in comparison to, say, the pollution in Karachi. Bugs are not a problem, like California.

Food
------
An addicitve blend of indian spices from the east and central asian, meat eating, muslim habits from the west. Although wheat is staple, meat comes close. Rice is also part of the diet. If you can stomach the spices, there is no better food, period. Each region has its own unique cuisine. Seafood usually means fish (has a religious reason), although regular seafood is popular in Karachi (due to a loophole).

Places to visit
---------------
If they can make a tourist destination out of arizona, then Pakistan is a hell lot better. We have virtually all kinds of landscapes, historical sites, cultural events, and so on. Again, think India. You can practically walk into china through the newly built silk road. The border between Pakistan and afghanistan is almost non-existant. But political instability makes tourism difficult, to put it mildly.

Culture and Religion
--------------------
Predominanty muslim. Significant influence from the hindu past, and hence, a LOT of superstition, albeit of the eastern kind. Most people are more concerned about day to day life than OBL. Think Iraq. Smoking is nonexistant in women, but very common among males. Drugs are a serious problem. People in rural areas are warm and hospitable, people in urban areas are cold and aloof, as is true everywhere. More on this later.

superFOB described it well. in the following post, on my request he has added a map (physical, showing rivers, mountains, & major cities, of course). THANKS, superFOB.

& since brother Nomi is annoyed at me having turned down his invitation to be the official spokeman for Pakistan, i will add here a little of what i know. & keep updating it.

one thing superFOB forgot. I think it is unique. among the transport, we have donkey carts. not unique, but cute. especially the baby donkeys. i think all will agree that all babies are cute. (i am frightened of the human ones. they look so fragile)

& there is one species of fish that is unique to Pakistan. It lives in kareez, that are water conduits, in the deserts of Baluchistan. perhaps someone can describe them here. uniqueness: the fish is blind, having become so for not having light reach them.

another unique thing is the annual donkey cart racing contest in Karachi - like chariot racing. but they put bets on it. :(

goes without saying that being a muslim country we have to have the official Islamic animal - the Camel. yep, our transport includes camels.

& it also includes the motor rickshaw, hand-pulled or foot-pedalled rickshaws having been outlawed in major cities. but i am told they do exist elsewhere. Not sure, though.

& yes: the fruit is heavenly,  especially the mangoes. most of it gets exported though. Similarly the fabrics. The best is again exported. But when the US & Europe try to sqeeze the government & put quota & sanctions on us, we lesser mortals get to see & sometimes buy the heavenly fabrics made for the rich guys in the super duper US of A, ze olde Europa, & the Gulf/ Saudi.

& yes, sister Savaira, pakola (or icecream soda) has been my love drink from childhood (50's). I missed it when i moved away from karachi, but now it has reached Islamabad. another heavenly thing was "Hav Mor Icecream", both available at Frere Road, where my aunt (Khala) lived. We lived then on Burns Road., just a stone's throw away.

The people: some of the richest, thru' middle class of all means, to the poorest. one-third of the population lives below the poverty line. But we are not worried. whenever we get such depressing statistics, we look at our neighbor India, & see that they have much more miserable poverty than us.

The best export is our manpower. amazingly productive, once out of the country. very hard-working here as well, especially the ones who break stones at noon on a mid-summer day, & fasting, too.

& Lahore is not part-village, part city. Its pollution level has crossed Karachi. I think Nomi is best suited to describe Lahore. He lives there.

& tell you what. Pakistan is a survivor state. At its birth, many times during its history, its demise has been predicted, but it has survived.

more later!

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

Here are a few details of my home place ;-)
History

Of volcanic origin and sheltered for its major part by barriers of coral reefs forming natural, safe, crystal clear lagoons, it has for long been a dream destination. Known to Arabs as early as the 10th Century, but officially "discovered" in 1505.

Geographical Location

Situated at approximately 2000kilometers to the coast of Africa, the land has an area of 1865 square kilometers with 330 kilometers of coastline. Inland features include a vast central plateau, subtropical forests, rivers, steams and waterfalls. Bordering this tableland are several mountain ranges consisting of diverse shaped masses of basalt testifying the volcanic origins of the island

Population

At different stages during the course of its history, people of diverse origins- Indian (Hindus and Muslims), African, European and Chinese- have settled on the island bringing their culture language, values and traditions. The country today is a recognized cultural melting pot and is often cited as a perfect example of peaceful co- existing of the main religions of the world.

Thank you SuperFOB and Timbuktu for your detailed info about Pakistan.  It sounds a lot like other countries in the middle east, differing mostly in climate and language.  Interesting about the donkey-cart racing.  Do you have horse-drawn carriages?  Do people go out in pajamas?  Any websites with great pakistani recipes?  I didn't think you were Paki, Timbuktu.  I wonder why????

& yes, pyjamas were worn. Now the national dress is shalwar qamees. i guess HiMY or Nomi can post a picture of themselves in this outfit. The dress also varies slightly from region to region.

i guess you got confused about my country by my username "timbuktu". Look up this city in the Southern Sahara. was the capital of yet another islamic state, & very prominent. i just saw the name on the atlas, & liked it.

one more thing about Pakistan. The transport buses & trucks are adorned superbly. These transporters doll them up. A new one is as pretty as a bride.

but you know this is becoming a pakistani/ timbuktu enterprise. i will have to delete all my posts if others do not come up with descriptions/ travel/ anything about their coutry/ state/ city/ town/ etc.

how many islands? 2000 i heard. how did they count them? i mean if i went around from island to island, ticking up another mark as i touched one island after another, i would go bonkers.  :)

& you did not tell us about the oil, & the forests, & the rain, & the humidity, & the time forest fires blocked out the sun for the entire region including Malaysia & HongKong for how may days??? & the phosphate rich caves formed by the droppings of millions of lizards/ or bats (?) living in them.

& i guess indonesians are born swimmers, as must be bangladeshis.

so tell us all that, & more, everything that you know. & if i am wrong say so boldly.

Very interesting, Timbuktu.  Yes, your username confused me.  BTW, I am a sister potato.  Born in Egypt, live in NY.  Egypt is a lot like how you've described Pakistan, only the climate is different.  Cairo is very foreign to me, as I am from the small province of Damietta (pronounced Dumyaat in arabic), which is in the north and is where the east branch of the Nile empties into the mediterranean sea.  It's about a 45 minute drive to sinai.  Damietta is pretty much unheard of now, so usually when I mention it the only replies I get are "huh?"  But historically it's very significant.  How do I begin to talk about  Egypt?  There's so much I don't know myself.   But I love it and I want to go back one day.

[wlm]

Re: Tell us about your country!!!

[slm] sister Potato, i have read the name "Dumyaat" in history, although i cannot remember the context. why not tell us about it. describe it when you were there. give us a rundown on the history, climate, transportation, economy, construction of houses, masagid, etc. in Dumyaat.

& if you have visited Cairo, you must have seen something of it. You can tell us about the Aswan Dam, about Egyptian cotton, about the pyramids, and about the old City.

do you know that old cities/ towns/ quarters are disappearing fast. If you do not recollect Dumyaat & put it on paper now, when you visit it you may not find it the same as you left it. & what you write today may help you smile a little then. If you have a digital image of some part of Dumyaat, post it here, that will be something.

& you are right, Egypt & Pakistan are very similar, so are the people. i have a suspicion that they are also loving as well as jealous of each other, like siblings. perhaps they look at each other as competitors.

I met the Egyptian Squash Champion in Stockton, UK, in 1975-76. don't recall his name. poor chap felt trapped in Britain, although he was well-settled, but had this longing to go back home.

How is everybody? how was Eid? Inshaallah good  :)  mine was pretty hectic... my family moved to a new house (two blocks away from old house  :))  during Eid... and i had to help out with the moving esp cuz i am never home since college started...

i am glad to see this post back again!! its really interesting... i love to learn about different countries...

anyways, bro timbuktu do you remeber what you wrote (above qoute) regarding my writing about how lost i felt? ... will you please continue explaining to me... do you want me to start a new topic? i will if you want inshallah...

i wrote something regarding marriage as well... back then i was very discourage about getting marriade... yes i did read Himy's post... but still i was discouraged...

then things happened... i read more about islamic marriages, ahadiths... and so on... my vies started to change (alhumdulillah)

... then i got a proposal from somebody who (mashaallah) very religious, down-to-earth kindda person, and who i know since at least 2 years... and alhumdulillah there is nothing more agreeable than that proposal...

we have a big cultural differences though... hopefully we won't go through hard times... but i am thinking we will... esp. cuz he is Turkish and i am Bengali... my parents' thinking---> my children will be slain if they marry someone from a different culture other than bengali...

"sigh"

i am not worried cuz Rahman, Rahim, Allah [swt] is always with me... with us...

so inshaallah you guys will hear more about my upcoming shaadi related events... may be after atleast 3 years...  :)  :)  yeah that long...

inshaallah bro timbuktu will give me some advice regarding countries...cultures... so on...
i don't understand people!!!... why they put culuture in front instead of religion? no wonder muslims don not unite... "sigh"

ma salaama
