Islamic view on prayer/dua's/afterlife

Double question here   :)

I was wondering what the Islamic view on prayer and dua's is.
Is it believed if you are not Muslim your prayers, dua's are not heard?
Reading things over the last  couple years I thought I read something to that effect. However since he is all merciful and compassionate I hate to think he does not hear the cries and prayers of Non-Muslims

Another thing I was wondering is, like Catholics believe in a pergatory (a middle place between heaven and hell. Most Christians do not, it's either one or the other.
Do Muslims believe in a middle place?

What about like Indians who had no Bible or Quran or any type of books, missionaries or such, or folks who live in way out countries who never heard about Allah in a Muslim sense or God in a Christian sense, what happens to them???
Are they just pawns on the chess board of life? ( :( shutters at the thought)
Thank you in advance for answers and insights.   :)

As long as you're not praying to Jesus or the Trinity or a statue or w/e, I'm pretty sure Allah will always either answer your supplications or take away an equal amount of evil. (There's a hadith that says that) A Muslim is anyone who submits to, or is trying to submit to, the will of God. I didn't word this very good sorry.

When mankind is judged, there will be some people who's scale of good and bad deeds is equal. They'll sit between Heaven and Hell, but then the calls of the people of Jannah will bring them into Heaven. Also from a hadith.

God will neva neva punish people who didn't have a messenger sent to them, and he sent messengers to all the people of mankind at one time or another. If someone lives their life through and dies without being exposed to Islamic monothiesm, they won't be held accountable and will be in Jannah insha'Allah. That's from the Qu'ran.

Any correct information that I've said is from Allah, and anything wrong is my own errors. To err is human, so please correct me if I've passed on incorrect information and Allah forgive me ;D
