My sons asked me about the correct spelling of colour! And I spelt it: c o l o u r! And they said, but it sometimes spelt as c o l o r. I said: that is American English!!! Don't use that spelling, please. Having been colonised by Britain, Kenya's school curriculum is of British English as the word English is derived from England. This means I always like to write my English words according to the correct English spellings and not the Americanised version. So do most Kenyans because examinations in the English language and literature have to be correct otherwise you fail a test if you left out a letter such as u in colour or neighbours, etc. Then I remembered what one of my English teachers in school told us in class which I told my children of course. He said: English was born in England Grew up in America Got sick in Africa Died in India And was buried in China! Halima |

[slm] that was nice. However, i was very particular about my English English, until recently, when I discovered that the net has transformed almost everyone. So i use both British & American English. ameritish or brimican, whatever you want to call it. |

I agree with you brother timbuktu, especially with new words which are not even in the dictioneries yet, being used. |

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)
My sons asked me about the correct spelling of colour! And I spelt it: c o l o u r! And they said, but it sometimes spelt as c o l o r. I said: that is American English!!!
Interesting how glamour is spelled with the "u" on both sides of the pond though. The page below shows some other interesting spelling quirks. ;-) http://us2uk.tripod.com/spelling.htm Who'd be an English student!!! |

Thank you, BrKhalid. This mean have been using some American spellings myself, e.g realise vs realize! But I refuse to write cheque as check! |
