[slm] I wrote to our staff newspaper today to say that it would be nice if they addressed the issue of prayer in the work place in their news paper. The reply was
I have a dilemma because i don't know how to do this - its such a personal matter and there are as many religious convictions and beliefs as there are staff members. Do you have any suggestions? I appreciate your interest Do you want to write something for ROOTS?
I think this would be a great opportunity Insha Allah but i am wondering whether it should be a general article that will not dwell on or perhaps mention ANY ONE religion or should i just concentrate on the importamce of Salah (and or Jamaat) in the work place. Insha Allah i would like to do this right, any advice would be welcomed. Jazak Allah for your patience :-) |

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah, Hm.. this is for a majority non-Muslim audience right? Maybe you can just talk about the lack of spirituality in the workplace.. and how many people are striving to incorporate some spirituality into their work day... and then give some diverse examples.. and definitely include Muslims who seek out a quiet place to pray at five distinct times through out the day, etc. I think it's a good idea to *generalize* the desire for spirituality to people of many different faiths.. so that when you talk about the Muslim who prays fire times a day, people see it in concordance with this.. not "oh my goodness, they are so fanatical" but "ahh they are seeking to step back from the rat race, gain some introspection, and remember their purpose" I hope the article goes well insha'Allah.. I'd love to see it when it's completed :) wasalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah :-) |

[slm] Sis Bismillah, I would also love to see the article if you do it. For me, I do my Dhuhur and Asar prayers in my office. So do most of my Muslim colleagues despite the fact our offices are located at the United Nations Complex here in Nairobi which is on acres and acres of land. It is a complex because UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme) and UN-Habibat (United Nations Human Settelements Programme, UNHSP) World Headquarters are based here and so do a number of UN Agencies such UNICEF, etc. Hence there is a large number of Muslims working here. I have been thinking along the lines of mobilizing all the Muslim colleagues in the UN so that we can request for a small Masjid. Muslims go to the city centre for the Friday prayers. Please keep us posted. Shukran. Halima |
