[slm] I read this article about the Nigerian woman who was convicted of adultery. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20030827/wl_afp/nigeria_islam_030827125639 They are appealing her conviction based on the idea that there can be dormant embryos left from her previous for up to 5 years following the divorce. The article states that this is a part of Shariah. Is that true?? If so, the Iddah period of 3 months makes no sense whatsoever. The whole point of it is to make sure that she is not carrying the child of her former husband right? So if she can carry an embryo fertilized by her first husband for up to 5 years, wouldn't it follow that Iddah should be that long???? |

[slm] The iddat period for a divorcee is a duration of three menstural periods, after which point she is free to remarry. This is so that any pregnancy can be discovered and her period of seclusion adjusted in accordance. Wasalaam |
