Police Brutality

[slm] everyone. I hope everyone is good insha'Allah.

I just wanted to aks if anyone on the board has ever been a victim of police brutality, been threatened by police with brutality, been the victim of racial discrimination at the hands of police, or been completely wrongfully accused by the police for reasons such as race, wealth class etc.

Please PM me if you've been the victim of any of the above examples of the mental retardation of the police department.

Sorry for the abruptness of this post, but it's 5 am and the popos came around my house cussin at me, threatenin to beat me, threatenin to arrest me, etc. etc. etc. for things I have no idea what they're talking about. Backwardz police threatening to beat me doesn just brush off, and I'm jus a lil >:( ya nah I'm sayin.

I'm so glad it was 5 am, if they patted me down in front of my house in broad daylight I would be about 7 times more >:( than I am now.

Oh, please make dua for me as well, because if they bring detectives around and arrest me for sumfin I didnt do (they said they would) I'm not gon be a happy man ya nah I mean.

Boy there's been nothing but complaints about Toronto's police force for how long.

[slm] everyone Allah bless all ya'll.

[wlm] bro

wow that sounds scary  :o, insha'Allaah I hope ur feeling better and somewhat calmer now.  I second everything sis Fozia has said in her post.  If ur home alone, maybe u should get someone to come over? But I definitely think u should be careful in what u say, even tho u may not have done anything wrong, they may twist something u say, read something deeper into it, or they may just decide that even ur one word response is enough to incense them  ???.  Ok, maybe I've watched too many movies in which the cops are portrayed as bad ones.

Seriously tho, I hope u r ok and that this all works itself out.  Just try and stay patient (v hard, I can imagine!).  I'm sure there's an Islaamic group of some sort that deals with stuff like this? Or is that just for the states? Does anyone know what I'm talking about (cos I obviously don't!).  Is it called CAIR or something?

Thinking of u bro, and yes, please do let us know what's going on so we can stop thinking all sorts! and worrying   :(

WhiteSomali,

Just be cool.  The police are just trying to wind you up.  They do that all of the time.  They're just waiting for an excuse to book you, and they can't do anything until you respond to their provocation.  Happens all of the time.

Don't be stupid and just humor the donut men.

here is some advice I had on file... not sure of the source:

What You Can Do If the Police Come

If the police show up at your house, or work space, you can:

Call to NOTIFY LAWYERS & Call in a request for OBSERVERS

DEMAND TO SEE THE WARRANT: (If someone sees the police coming you could try shutting the door and have one person walk outside to talk to the police and get a warrant and say that they do not consent.  If this can be someone connected to the building in some way all the better.)

WHETHER A WARRANT IS PRODUCED OR NOT the person talking to the police, and others in the space,  should say  "I DO NOT CONSENT TO A SEARCH" (this should be repeated over & over for as long as police are on the property engaging in search and/ or confiscation activities

ANY ATTEMPT TO PHYSICALLY STOP THE POLICE from coming into the space or conducting a search CAN LEAD TO A VERY SERIOUS ASSAULT OF A POLICE OFFICER CHARGE (APO).  Note:  TOUCHING AN OFFICER even in the slightest way (or even TOUCHING ANYTHING ON HIM like his HAT or BATON) can lead to an Assault on a Police Officer  Charge, WHICH IS A  VERY, VERY SERIOUS CHARGE.

If they have a warrant for someone’s arrest, there is little chance that they would leave the premises without searching for that person.  If they make an arrest in the house or space, they can search the space.  Stepping outside will get around this.

WHILE THE POLICE ARE THERE IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO:

TAKE NOTES

· Write down the NAMES AND BADGE NUMBERS OF ALL POLICE OFFICERS

· Write down the NAMES, JOB TITLES and DEPARTMENTS of any  fire marshals, building inspectors, or other government officials that enter with the police or independently

· Write down an  INVENTORY IDENTIFYING EVERYTHING BEING SEARCHED AND/OR CONFISCATED, where in the center it came from.

TAKE PICTURES:
·
· of  all POLICE  OFFICERS & other officials

Okay I was mad irked thismornin I'll esplain what happened better.

First thing is, it's not really a problem with me being Muslim, it's a problem with me a. living in whas considered Toronto's ghetto b. me dressing the way I dress c. The way I talk and my accent (which isnt Carribean eh go figure ::))

You see, in Toronto during the last few months or maybe the last year, the Toronto police have been receiving huge amounts of complaints from the black community (both Africans and Jamaicans) because, there seems to be alot of young officers who think they have sumfin to prove and think we're all thugs. So although I may be white-skinned, I'm still a member of the black community (the area, my style/personality/speech etc.). Even my mom said if I looked like a clean white boy they wouldnt have been all up on my like they was.

So it was around 1:30 at night, and I was like wide awake because I sleep at strange hours :D There wasn any food in my house so I decided to go cop some food somewhere else. I went out, got about 15 minutes away from my house, did my thang and jus ate n chilled n w/e till about 2:30. So at 2:30 I decided I'd head back home. Yeah I know its late but I always go out this late and I usually see people I know anyway.

Soo now I'm on my way home, and some popo pull up to me in an SUV and start aksin my questions about hearin gunshots n stuff... but he figured aight s'all good I ain know nuffin and let me bounce. I don even know if I heard gunshots, it's not an uncommon thing here so alot of people get to the point that as long as its not someone they know, no one notices gunshots or nuffin. Interestingly enuff this officer was maybe his mid to late fourties. So he lets me bounce and about one minute later, while I'm still in site of the police SUV, a police car come pullin up to me. (There was like 4 or 5 cars around there area I guess someone got shot? I dunno not big news here like I said) Now the guys in this car were younger, maybe late twenties to mid thirties. They aksed me nuff questions, took all my address/phone information, took a complete physical description right down to any scars/tattoos/nicknames etc. You know the kinda stuff they use to identify you when they put you on crimestopperz ::) Well after lookin at like ten millions pieces of ID the man decides I am who I say I am (I was scurred anyway, his partner was standin right behin me like they was gon jump me) and he says aight you can go. So I walk and 20 seconds later the same popo dem come up from behin me and make me empty my pockets for them. Well lo n behol I ain got no weapons or drugs or nuffin I shouldn be in possession of so they got no choice but to let me go. So I go home, and phone n talk to some of my friends for a while about it, then around 4 am I fell asleep on the couch. At about 5 am I'm awoken by a loud knock at the door. I'm the only one home anyway, so I go up n get the door. I pretty much knew it was the popes b4 I opened it. So I open it and see the same ones dem, and on the inside I'm thinkin oh bloody hell. And immediately they start grillin me and sayin i should be sorry for sumfin or sumfin and they know I did it. I'm sittin there thinkin, oh great they know I did it morons ::) So they fully fingerprinted me, which now I found I dun even think they're ALLOWED to do that cuz they ain got nuffin on me except that I was in the area of w/e happened. Now I'm mad lucky its 5 am and no ones awake, because the two goons brought me down to the street and shoved me into the back of their car. Now I'm lucky, I can control my temper in situations like this so I wasn flippin out on them. So after they shove me in the car, I got them sayin "We're doin you a favor Chris bla bla bla you should confess now b4 we find out on our own" Okayyy great they really ARE goons, I've known police to play stupid games like this all the time... they say they already know or your friend ratted u out or w/e so you may as well confess. They don know a bloody thin! Stupid liars. So I'm still here in the back of the squad car, in front of my house. My landlord lives in the basement, so if he comes out and sees this there's gon be hell to pay. Then one the popo leans over, and starts cussin me like woah! I mean this fool was cussin more than people at school do. I was gettin so mad on the inside but I didn show it cuz like I said subhan Allah I'm blessed and can control that. So after cussin me, I'm still sittin there like "I swear I dunno wha all ya'll is talkin about" and the backwards popo (both a dem!) start sayin, if you be innocent, then when u answered the door why did you say "I know why you guys are here" I'm sittin there like, omg these guyz is fools (in my head ::)) and I esplain to them that they just cant understand the way I speak, because I said "I ain even know why all ya'll is here" not "I know why ya'll r here" So the popo who was cussin like a sailor gets even more vex at me, and aight this part is important, the loser threatened to get into the back of the squad car n mess me up! Okayyy there buddy what an idiot. he threatened to assault me! He CAN NOT do that wha di ell maynn! So they pull me out of the car and the nex one fully searches me, I'm so lucky it was 5 am. I was wearin a big baggy jean suit so they fully search thru all like 20 of my pockets and the man is like feelin me up, I mean come on I ain apprechiate no bwaty bwoy popo feelin up mi rass lap! Well OMG it turns out I ain got no weapons or anything on me again, same as b4 and there's no reason they should have been suspicious. Then they tell me they know my fingerprints will match the ones at the scene (idiots) and they gon be back wit detectives to arrest me. Alrighht you dumb popes, they wasn allowed to take my fingerprints but I dun care cuz at leas they cant possibly match the nex ones. They said my physical description and my voice matches some man or sumfin, and I heard ppl talkin bout me on the police radio. So they drive off after threatenin to get me arrested, and now it's maybe 5:30. I went inside and phoned up nuff ppl and told them about this retarded popo dem harassin me up. Well my mom n my stepdad are mad like woah, so is every1 else cuz we all know how the police have been towards ppl in the black community here, like 90% of the young police are bloody racists. Well now everyone figures theres gon be hell to pay for them, because they had no reason to treat me like a prime suspect (I even watched other people walk right by while they were interrogatin me near the crime scene, they completely ignored them cuz they werent dressed like they were "black" for lack of a better word) and there ain no way they had to right to cuss at me and physically threaten me.

Well we don figure we're gon hear back from the stupid popo dem seein as my fingerprints be proof I ain got nuffin to do wit anythin, moron police. That ain gon stop us from ridin them, my mum knows wha division it was.

It's amazin after readin sumfin I wrote like this, to find out that I ain got a bad temper at all. Anyone who knows me wont be able to remember the last time I was angry (save today). But when the people who are supposed to UPHOLD my rights as a Canadian citizen and as a Human being, treat be like the dirt they walk on, I can't not get mad. I cussed more today than I have in the last 3 years ::)

Anyway, now a big problem is, its their word against mine. But that might be swayed by the fact that Toronto's police have been fully known for discrimination. And besides, accordin to one of the reasons they know it was me, they have radios in the car that tape every conversation, so I guess that would have recorded him threatenin to beat me down in the back of the squad car.

Ahh boy, a hijabi girls niqabi mother got pulled over last year by the police too. Her crime was driving an expensive car while being niqabi. The only people denying that Toronto police are racist (to like, every1) is the police force itself.

Thank you for readin through that long, gramatically incorrect post ;D It's nice to get it out.

[slm]

Edit: Okay the grammar in that was fully garbage, a few words wasn even the right words. I fixed a few of it; it's still mosly garbage, I hope ya'll can understand. I was writin this in mad quicctime.

2nd Edit: Ya Rubb! I can't believe I forget this; JazakAllah jazakAllah jazakAllah jazakAllah jazakAllah jazakAllah jazakAllah to everyone who made/is making duas, and ya'll are in mine.

[wlm]  WhiteSomali,

Alhamdulillah its great that you had the maturity and wisdom to stay so calm.  I don't know Canadian laws but this site has basic US laws when dealing with the police: http://www.cair-ny.com/wtc/KnowYourRights.html

It would be good to contact a Civil Rights org or CAIR-Canada http://www.caircan.ca/   to know what you should do in such situations.

Though I'm guessing that by law (well U.S. law at least) you cannot be taken in a car unless they actually arrest you. nor do you even have to open the door when they come to your house.  Some years ago a robbery suspect supposedly came running through my neighborhood and according to the police, he went through our backyard, so they came to search the place, and wanted to talk to my mother, who told them she didn't know a thing and shut the door.

Brother, please keep us updated, these types of things make us aware of whats going on, you are in my duas, may Allah give you strength to deal with these trials, ameen.

Alhamdulillah you're OK. I definitely think you should chase this up though and try and get them to destroy your fingerprint records, because here once you go on their files that's it your there forever, (not a good thing IMO).

As for dressing black  :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ sounds more like you dress like a student, every single student where I work dresses like that. Once a 6'4" boy from Kentuchy came to pay a terms fees (all £3,000 in cash) it took him like twenty minutes to find the right pocket.... ::)
