The Simple Things In Life

I had a chat with my son this morning and the topic of the conversation was his birthday this coming Saturday.  He sat on my lap as I gently comb his hair.  I asked him how old he will be this Saturday and he answered 7.  I told him that he is a young man now with young man's responsibilities.  He asked me what those responsibilities are and I told him that first and foremost, he has to be more diligent with his solah and his tilawah.  Then I said he has to be more forthcoming with helping his grandparents and me with housework etc.  He also must be more conscious of his role as an older brother to Solehah.

He looked very thoughtful for quite sometime.  Then he asked me what would Allah do if he does all that.  I told him that Allah will love him very much and will want him to be with Him in Jannah.  He then replied that if Allah takes him to Jannah, he will bring me with him because he doesn't want to be separated from me. I told him that separation is inevitable because someday he will be an adult and he will marry and have family of his own.  He looked sad and told me he doesn't want to marry because he wants to be with me.

Then I told him that someday I or him will pass away and we each have to learn to live without the other.  At this juncture, he hug me and ask me if I die can he please make du'a to Allah to also take him immediately to Jannah to meet me.  I was too choked up to reply so I kissed him and sent him off to school.

The whole afternoon, after my dzuhur, I thank Allah for the simple things in life that has the capacity to give me the greatest of pleasure.  Indeed, for all my struggles as a mother, for all the pain I endured, Allah Rewarded me with two beautiful souls.

It is not the wealth we amass neither is it the position we aspire to that will give us happiness.  It is the knowledge that we are indeed truly blessed with the simple joys in life.

PS I thought, while waiting for him to be blessed with Jannah, a huge chocolate cake would make Wafi happy.  Don't you think ? :)

Wassalam.
