What follows is strictly my personal opinion.

Taking contraceptives to delay your period, IMO, is unnatural.  I wouldn't do it.

I know it's not always the easiest thing when you get your period at 'inconvenient' times, but Allah created us to have them.  He is not going to hold it against us if we can't do certain things based on something that He gave us.

It is maybe helpful to remember that Allah rewards the Muslim according to what he intends, and all the ibadah that you make intention for you will be rewarded for if you are prevented.  There are other types of ibadah that are not off limits during menses, dhikr, du'a, giving in charity, etc.  Accepting the fact that Allah may ordain one to be menstruating while in the vicinity of the ka'ba with contentment is worship in and of itself...and I do realize that the temptation is great and it's probably easier said than done.

I really don't like the whole idea of manipulating our natural cycle to get around something that Allah gave us.  Besides, all those hormones do have certain side effects on your body, some of the known problems, weight gain, mood swings, etc.

Again, just my personal opinion.

May Allah make it easy for you.

I am sooo sure I wrote a reply to this q here, but it vanished I suppose into cyberspace:)

Anyway, short response: totally different to sis Muslima;)

If you are already on some sort of contraception, then it is easy to skip a "period" by just skipping the placebo pills and going on straight to the next packet...this can safely be done for 3 months, after which the WHO recommends you take a weeks' placebo...and have a bleed.

If you are not on any contraception, then go and consult your doctor asap. There is a chance you can have breakthrough bleeding at the start of using these pills, so ask your doctor, and get advise as soon as you can.  Once she tells you all the plus and minus points, you can make an informed choice, inshaAllah!

I would DEFINITELY take some sort of precaution to prevent my period if I was going on Umrah!  There are just so many things you can't do if you have your period, that it just deprives you of the "whole" experience!  My sis had her period when we were in Jerusalem the last time, and it was just so sad, how much she missed out on!  :'(

Ok, my opinion...but hey, may Allah guide you to do what is best for you, inshaAllah, and accept from you your Umrah and Ibadaat !:)

Salam

I agree with your moher about not taking the pill. I took it when I was younger.  By the age of 28 I had cysts and tumors throughout my reproductive system.  I had to have a complete hysterectomy and as the doctors were opening me up one of my ovaries ruptured.  Masha Allah it happened when it did or I could have died from the toxins the rupture produced.

I don't know if the pill is better than it was over 20 years ago, but I would strongly advise against ANY synthetic conraceptive method.

I agree with Yasmeena. I also took 'the pill' for about a year when i was younger to help with PMs symptoms, etc. I also came up with an ovarian cyst that had to be removed last year (I am only 27). ALHAMDULILLAH the ovary was fine and it was only one cyst, but why take the chance? That surgery had me laid up in bed for 4 weeks and EXTREMELY limited for an additional 4 wks. NO FUN!!!! Trust me, you guys dont want to go through that. As far as Umrah is concerned. I can understand why you would want to delay it as to not miss anything, but remember, everything is as Allah wills. If he wills it that you bleed, you will bleed no matter what you do to try to stop it. If he wills it that you do not bleed, then HE will delay it. Don't risk your health for something that is not in your own control. Playing with hormones is scary!!

Well sister simple answer to your question is follow sunnah of umhatul momineen. Is it possible that any woman can be more concerned about her deen more than those holy personalities. Difference wives of Holy Prophet  [saw] travelled with Holy Prophet  [saw] for Umra/Haj and they did go through this problem and I don't think they would be left behind in ajr due to their natural problem.

Alhamdulillah...i finally met up with my Doc and we went thru' this whole option. I have never been on contraceptive pills any i was asked lots of questions regarding my monthly cycle & all but there was a problem. My sister got diagnosed with breast cancer recently (just before i went for the consultation, please keep her in your duas)...my Doc told me straight that its best for me NOT to go ahead with my idea of taking these pills. It just too big a risk on the long run.. :(

Well, for now, I am already given a chance to perform umrah on this blessed month, Insya'Allah, so i'll just leave it all to Allah. HE knows best.

Here's a fatwa I found on Islam online: http://www.islamonline.net/fatwaapplication/english/display.asp?hFatwaID=54634

Title en Taking Pills to Stop Menses during Ramadan

Question it permissible for a woman to use contraceptives and other forms of medication during Ramadan to stop her period in order to be able to fast the whole month of Ramadan? I know that women are allowed to use such kind of medication during Hajj, but I wonder does the same ruling applies here? Jazakum Allahu Khayran.

Answer
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear sister in Islam, thank you very much for having confidence in us and may Almighty Allah guide you to that which pleases Him and to reward you for your sincere intention and keenness in performing the acts of worship, Amen.

Answering the question , the late Sheikh Sayyed Mutawalli Ad-Darsh, former head of the UK Shari`ah council, states the following:

"The majority of Muslim scholars, as far as I know, not consider such an act as being tantamount to tampering with nature. Rather, it is considered an act of regulation with aim of allowing women who'd rather avoid their periods in order to participate with people in fasting Ramadan and performing Hajj at ease. There is nothing wrong with women using pills or available resources to block menstruations and have chance to perform their acts of worship during such times."

Moreover, Dr. Rif`at Fawzi, former professor of Shari`ah at Cairo University, adds:

"There is nothing wrong, as far as Islam is concerned, if a woman takes such pills during Ramadan in order to be able to continue fasting the whole blessed month without interruption.

However, we have to keep in mind that a woman is allowed to do so while being guided by the following conditions:

1- Taking such pills must not result in putting her life and health at risk.

2-It is better, before taking such medication, to seek the advice of a reliable physician."

May Allah guide you to the straight path and direct you to that which pleases Him, Amen.

Allah Almighty knows best.
