Does anyone know of a website with good Koranic transliterations (Al-hum-du-li-la-hee) and so forth?
Thanks
Chris

[slm] Chris,

Here's one site providing transliteration of the Quran in English:

http://www.muslimaccess.com/quraan/transliterations/index.htm

You have to look at the transliteration rules though. I hope it is not too complicated.

Here's another site you could try inshaAllah:

May Allah swt make it easy for you, Ameen.

I find listening to the recitation of the Qur'an is very helpful in improving pronounciation.

Brother, transliterations aren't very good at all. Once you've learned how to read Arabic, you'll realize how amazingly far the pronunciation of transliterations are from the real thing.

Luckily, learning to read Arabic should only take a few months tops insha'Allah, and this is if you only attend one class a week and do the absolute minimum amount of work ;D

Pronunciation is very very important in the Arabic language. I mean very important. Words that may sound the same to non-Arabic speaking people will have complete different meanings to people who know Arabic ;D That's why transliteration can't cut it. Especially since a few letters in the Arabic alphabet don't have an English equivilant.

You should ask your Imam if there's anywhere you can go to take courses to learn to read Arabic ;D

Bro, I know that didn't really answer your original question but I felt obligated to say it.

Of course, you'll probably need to memorize what you have to say in prayer and a few Surahs to get going before you can learn to read Arabic. For that you should use Quranic recitation tapes coupled with transliterations to try get your pronunciation right.

If you can't pray correctly in Arabic yet, this video is a great great tool, it uses sound and transliteration. Just remember when your memorizing the prayer, the Quran, or anything, take it one step at a time. Just go for a few positions in the prayer, or a few Quranic ayas etc. at a time. Gotta start slow ya know what I mean? That's the way Muslims have been doing it since the Sahaba.

I hope this helps Brother ;D And if you already know how to pray, please forgive my arrogance ;D
