Chat-based usrah group ?

[slm] akhawatiy :)

After reading the message boards for quite some time, I realise that most of us go though spiritual rollercoasters feeling alone.  Now that I travel between Singapore and Malaysia, I have had to quit my usrah group. ( Usrah group is a discussion group focusing on spiritual betterment).  I miss having that circle of people seeking together with me.  I wonder if its possible to start a chat-based usrah group.  We can use yahoo messenger and log in at the same time. Topic of discussion will be given in advance and a Head will be chosen.  I know tht it mite be difficult what with time difference and all but would love it if we could at least try.  This is open to ALL sisters, I sincerely would love to see Sis Dawn in the group for example.  This is not a missionary effort but an attempt to make sense of our souls in this mad world. Inshaa Allah.

Give me a holler if u are interested.

hmm i think i find the idea quite good. but see, couldnt we use msn messenger (i would prefer that). or do most of the users here have yahoo???  so that would be one prob, the other of course the time difference. hey what about the chat function you have here, i didnt try it yet, but how would that one work out?

I am interested... I have Yahoo.... being international, the time will make the difference.

This past week I was checking out the Yahoo chatooms.  :o It is really bad. There are a couple of rooms that were sometimes 'controlled' and it was nice.

I then went to the Catholic/Christian/Jewish sites and they did not have the red neck, profanity problems that invade the Islamic rooms.

I was wondering if anyone knew of 'secret' rooms where Muslims hang out and actually talked Islam.

??? What was really disheartening was the number of 'men' that im'd me who started their greetings with a minimal/slang  salam...   ::)

Ahh...you dont want to you use yahoo for a group chat. We did that before and there are a lot of technical problems with it. Ask Dawn  :)

I prefer MSN over Yahoo for group chat, but Umm Wafi since you mentioned Dawn specifically, she doesnt have MSN . If you can talk her into downloading msn, a lot of ppl will be happy! :)
oh and umm, I always walked away feeling my brain has been fried after talking to her *runs before she gets mad at me*

Alhamdulillah..it seems that many amongst us would like to have that spiritual connection.  MommaMod, you are right.  The so-called Islam Chat on Yahoo is nothing more but a roomful of foul-mouthed anti-Muslims.  After a while your eyeballs start whirring.  I have yet to see a Muslim chatroom that is clean. Still there might be one to surprise me :)

As for the software, since there is a split between yahoo and msn, why don't we use the chat function here ? Is it actually working ?  :D

The time I think is the most difficult part.  Lets throw some proposals.  Right now as I type this, it is 10.35pm Singapore time.  So what is your time there ?  Lemme know your preference.  I don't mind every Thursday, 11pm Singapore time or Friday, 6am Singapore time.  Lemme justify the time.  At 11pm, I have the time to myself after the kids sleep and at 6am I would be awake since it is after fajr.  Also, I felt those time won't be ungodly hours for the Americans and Canadians.  For Dawn, 11pm here would be abt 4pm there and 6am here would be abt 11pm there.  I think.  Give me feedback you all.

Maybe this is jumping the gun a bit, but I was thinking of a few alternative topics.

1) Spiritual cleansing
Book : The Degrees of the Soul by Sheikh Shabrawi

2) Self actualisation
Book : Ethics by Imam Ghazali

Okay Sistahs methinks me have yakked too much.  Lemme your voices now.

Wassalam.

[slm] all,

Dawn checking in here.   ;D  I am busy for a day or two, and look what I find.  Good thing 9thM. is long since logged out.  ;)  Frying people's brains, indeed!!!  <<sputter sputter>>  I consider it --- neuron stimulation!   ;D

On a more serious note, such a group could indeed be interesting and beneficial, but I agree, UmmWafi, we are going to have conflicts with times.  Actually, your 11 p.m. is my 5 p.m., and your 6 a.m. is my 12 midnight, so the only of those two times that would be possible for me would be the former.  And another thing.  Group size can be a critical dynamic.  At least with chat, in my experience, any more than 4 or 5 people, and you no longer have one discussion going, but two or three.  This can happen even with only 4, but it is easier to control.  So, perhaps, what would be needed, if there is great interest, is not one group, but two or more, perhaps organized by time or something.  (Just a suggestion.)

With Peace,
Dawn

I like this idea!  ;)

I have AOL messaging but would try to get whichever one is decided on.  Let me know what is decided and times and dates.  Either a message here or e-mail me.  My address is on my profile.

Ok...can I suggest tentatively Thursday night 11pm my time which is Switzerland Thursday evening at 5pm and the USA Thursday morning at 11am (Jannah.org clock).

Phew...like Dawn says, if time is a problem then the American sisters can have the Usrah group with people of compatible time zone.

Please gimme a shout as to who is ok with the above time and day :)

We shall be using the Jannah chat...If that is ok with Jannah ? If not, we can try Yahoo..tho my laptop always freeze when I do voice conferencing :(

Inshaa allah..make du'ah that if this is good for us, may we have success but if this is not good for us then May Allah Protect us :)

Oh man I would love to....schedule permitting...

I think I have Yahoo...at least I did once have it, even though I haven't checked for about 2 years.  I'm down for msn...or i'm sure my yahoo id should still work.
