I've come to the bridge !

Nope! am not getting married :P...... Actually in that "Mixing" thread there was a talk about shaking hands with opposite gender and me said that i'll cross that bridge when i'll to it... so its here !!

Some people are gonna pay us an official visit from the corporate (US) office coming week. There will be presentations, meetings, 'cultural shows' ::) etc... plus an opportunity for me *not* to shake hands with some ppl from opposite gender who are gonna be there in the visiting group !

Here is what i plan to do to avoid it!

* Talk to some senior SE to ask our Center Manager to bring it to their notice b4 hand that Muslims dont shake hands with (non mehrams of) opposite gender

* I was having this wild thought of presenting a lil flower to the visiting ladies if they extend their hand for a shake but then i realized that it might look odd or err too romantic :P :P, so now i'm thinking about that business card thingie with few very polite comments (that would be nice i guess? )

Okay i'll let you guys know later that whether i survived it or got fired :P

dislaimer... usually I don't look into the guys topics...unless the post's subject title teases me into curiosity....

Nomi getting married... was a big tease!

then if i do venture to open and read the topic...usually I do not post because I don't really belong in their conversations... figure if they really wanted a woman's opinion they would post in the nasheeha section.

So I am in, I am reading, and i want to post because I think I have something a bit valuable to share.

Generally I have no problem saying that I do not shake...when it is a one on one kind of deal, with a few people around.  The other day i was in a situation where alot of people would be watching and I had nothing in my hands.

I was think hard and fast, i really did not think it was the time for a cultural lesson, although most people are relieved to learn it from me.

I made a quick dua and I clasped my hands behind me and as the men came and shook hands with my hubby and friends, they immediately noticed my incredibly small step back and hands behind my back. not one person offered to shake my hands... a smile and greeting was all that was needed.

Of course Nomi.. you may encounter a "woman libber" like I used to be... who thought I would make them join the 21st century and shake my hand... Allah swt forgive me.

If you meet someone like that... I have no advice.. other than to be greatful that she is not a hugger.

as an after thought, -you could whisper that you have warts... tee hee

Asked a senior to talk to the upper management to let the visitors know that we dont shake hands with opposite gender.

They ACKed.

Then when they were here, still i stood at a distance and just showed the respected lady my teeth with a "hello, how are you" and viola :P

So............... "the only shake i like is one with wilk" 8) (how about you ikhwans ? :) )

alhamdulilah ......... a zamzam cola for myself den []
wassalam

PS: Thanks for the tips mama mod :)

Salaams,
There will be presentations, meetings, 'cultural shows'
And what kind of shows will these be????
Where I work cultural shows by the respected party are going out and having a good time eating a fiery curry, drinking 20 bottles of budweiser, followed by table top lap dancing and staying awake till 3 in the morning talking crap.

What cultural shows will you take your clients too?? I'm interested..

Salaams

Quite a legitimate concern bro Hanif. Actually they were planning a cultural event with cultural (Paki) dresses, food and desi music (nothing cheap) but now it has come down to just a dinner (desi food), no music concert.

So dont worry inshaAllah :)
