Imaam Nawawi(May Allah have mercy on him) says in the Majmuu˜ (2.177):

Conversing in permissible speech, worldly matters, and other permissible things is allowed in the mosque, even if it leads to laughter and the like, so long as it remains permissible. [m: This is indicated] by the hadith of Jabir Ibn Samurah (Allah be pleased with him), "The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) wouldn't stand from the place in which he offered the morning prayer until the sun would rise; when it rose, he would stand." [m: Jabir] says, "they [m: i.e., the Companions] would talk and discuss the pre-Islamic days of ignorance and laugh, and he would smile." (Muslim)
