simple: it is a duty in islam, eg. according to some aayat in surat al-nisaa, 24th surah of quran alkarim. and as i feel convinced that the duty is clearly given, not only in this aaya, but also in antoher one, and also in ahadith, i wear it, and got convinced during the experience with hijab in a european country that it really did me a lot good, ranging from feeling better in my deep inside concerning my faith to self-confidence and strenght as well as protection

wa alaykum as salaam,

'cuz I'm muslim.. and a big thing in Islam is modesty.. and also judging people by how they are on the inside, and not their looks or superficial things.'

-- the short answer ;)

wasalaamu alaykum :)

ok, not meaning to question momma mod but why say my husband makes me? That would make people believe the trash they hear about Islam and oppressed women being forced, etc, etc?

I think she was kidding... I hope?

That's probably the answer they are thinking in their minds though, but when said out loud it must sound silly even to them.

:D ;D ;)

I haven't tried it yet... but think I am going to next time!

Jannah is right, they are most probably thinking that, ya know, those poor oppressed women... :-)

:oIt might catch them off guard and then with a bit of humor I can go into the real reasons.... At least I'll have their attention!

:PSorry to those who took me seriously... I was feeling a bit giddy when I read it. I was also wondering all day what kind of responses their would be to my post! :-/

"Because I want to."

"Because it's a part of my religion."

Actually, to be honest, the answer differs depending on who's asking, if they're Muslim or non Muslim (yes, Muslims ask), how much time I have, and how well I know them.

my reason is:

I wear hijab for the Love of Allah.  In order to please Him, and I please Him by obeying His commands.

If curious people ask: But why do some muslims not wear the Hijab?

I would answer:

To wear the hijab is a command from Allah to all believing women.  But we have the free will to choose to obey His commands or disobey His commands.

Might be a little outdated, but check out this similar thread:

thanks sister sofia for pasting that link to another similar thread.

I had a look at that thread which started off as short answers to this hijab question posed by curious strangers.   The short answers look to me like curt replies, and rather 'standoffish'.

Then the thread went off-tangent in the topic discussed.

I believe that curious strangers, for the most part, don't understand why do wear hijaab, and although some carry prejudice against muslims, the majority just lacks comprehension.

Rather than having a long essay to answer their question, I think its best to answer in the best manner and a smile.  If you smile at people, most will smile back at you [plus its a sunnah].  Remember, if they approach you without hatred, then regard that as a wonderful opportunity to do a little bit of da'wah, with a beautiful short reply and a friendly conduct.

16:125 Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance
