Running a message board

I've wondered, and this question is probably more suitable for Al-Basha or Bro. Hanif.  Is it possible to run a message board on win-xp pro, oracle 9i, with a DSL line? ???   I have thought about doing it, but what flavor of software? ???

You can if you get a DSL connection with a static ip. Otherwise your dynamic ip will have a life of 2 or 3 days (in most cases) after which your ip that the outside world sees will change. So you will have to figure out someway to tell everyone your new ip every couple of days.

Isn't Oracle 9i REALLY REALLY expensive? Most individuals go for a linux based system to reduce software costs.

Salaams,

Hey bhaloo I ain't that techy :-) but hey you might not want to run Oracle 9i as the costs of running it would be huge. Seriously to speak of I haven't come across many msg boards that are Oracle 9i based. In fact I've heard that some software firms are now moving to MySql, costs being one of the major factors. By the way bro why would you want to run 9i I guess its a legit copy if not stick to Mysql.

As for the line well depends whether you have static or non static IP. As bro Muhammed has said. The other thing you'll have to consider is your box WILL be on 24hours a day!. Now if your running this from home your costs will soon add up!!!.

You can easily install a msg board that is smart and looks professional for as little as $50. One of my favorite boards is www.unix.com check it out, beautiful. Hosting is something you'll have to consider, I'd go for Linux rather than Win 2000 as it offers more options, also with dozens of cheap and cheerful hosting options in the States you can't go wrong. (I still can't understand why Jannah and Bhaloo have failed to move servers)
Also you can easily install a Content Mgt System system like the one I have at www.muslimprofessionals.org.uk, and above all this can be configured to what you want., you can have msg boards, guest book, gallery, radio, sms stuff, shopping, quran, hadith, downloads etc etc etc etc.

In short you'll need this
okish host...
Linux box,
Mysql,
PHP,
and 30 mins of your time b4 to prepare the world for:

                                  www.bhaloo.com

ready to hit the world with words of wisdom.

If you want a hand or anyone else is interested in developing CMS systems let me know.

Salaams

hope it helps

Usually the DSL - IP addresses are static.  Even the cable line I have is virtually static.  But even if the IP address was dynamic and changed that wouldn't be a problem as I would just update the IP addresses  where the DNS entry is stored with some company like www.register.com.

As for Oracle 9i, it took up about 4 or 5 gigabytes and came on 3 cds with this book on Oracle I bought for $72.    Its the full version I guess, it says Developer's License on the CD.

But what message board software would run on Win XP?  And does their search work?

Obviously there are lotsa things out there that would do just fine but my concern is.... are you doing it for trial purposes? I mean we are in this together right? Like this administration team is the best in e-world... may Allah keep us united, ameen.

You-nite us (braveheart sHtyle :P )

Hmm, it seems you have enough sapce for Linux to go on in terms of partition you should be ok on that.
Then decide which system to go for Redhat, Suse, Mandrake etc to name a few. I'd go for one of  those three as they have the best support options and a good community of developers and support personnel.

Redhat, Mandrake and Suse can all be downloaded from the web, free of charge. I think I've got a copy RedHat/Mandrake somewhere if you want it let me know I can send a CD down to you.

In terms of other software you may need a disk partition tool like Partition Magic if thigs go awry but I wouldn't think so.
And thats about it. I've referenced some pages as they go into detail what one must do, I think you'd have half a days work to have two systems running on one box.

MySql less takes up less than 100mb and thats the full super duper version with all the bells and whistles, runs on Windows as well. www.mysql.com

I don't know many boards on WinXp, I think to use a msg board you may have to look at Win2000 using Internet Information Server(one of the most buggy app ever).

Why don't you hostyour site  bro its a lot easier...?

Message board up and running for free, now thats what bhaloo wants, isn't it bhaloo?

You'd need:

High speed internet connection: DSL will do the job inshallah.
OS: XP Pro is fine, don't exactly need linux for this app.
Web server: Apache web server for windows, chuck IIS out.
Domain Name: dyndns.org, you can get a domain name even for your dynamic IP, for free. If you IP address doesn't change that much, don't worry, static IP's can also be configured at dyndns.org, for free.
Message board with search that works: phpBB. It runs mysql at the backend and the search is FAST. Check out phpBB.com for more (especially the search on their community forums). Btw, mysql-php-apache bundles, in easy to use installation formats for windows, are widely available.
To give this message a bit more punch, I configured and ran a test phpBB on my local machine a while back.  Didn't play too much with it, but looked ok to me.

- super "free-loading" FOB

PS: IIS, yabb, oracle suck.
