Assalam Alaikum, I just needed some insight from the wonderful brothers and sisters on this board. I need some kind of academic help. Alhumdullilah, I have a BS in Computer Science, but I'm looking to pursue my Masters in computational biology/bioinformatics, coz the natural science has always been my first love. I was thinking Baylor College Of Medicine, TX. If anybody knows what the college is like, in terms of academics, the level of competitiveness, the demographix (if there are a good number of Muslims), and how a career for a Muslimah in this field would be. I visited their website, but I was really hoping for someone with a first or secondhand experience to share their words of wisdom. Any other universities I could opt for (within TX)? Anything, even the littlest piece of info would be appreciated. JazakAllah Khair. Wassalam :) |

Wa'alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullah, I have been to Baylor College of Medicne, did my one month of clinical rotation in Orthopedic surgery, and that was more than 2 years back. Don't know much about computational biology/bioinformatics, but overall the college is very reputable. Can't give u much info. about Muslims their either, but I am sure the community must be a good one. We used to pray jumu'ah there in a room in hospital, lots of people used to show up. Is bioinformatics different from biotechnology? or is it the same thing? maybe Abu Hamza can help here, he is into this biotechnology thing. Wassalam. |

[slm] yea what is informatics??? i've only heard of it this year, but have no clue what it is. Anyone got some good ideas about where to go for residency? i'm looking for a city w/ a good muslim community ;D preferably an family practice program that's unopposed (meaning they only have an FP residency at the hospital) [wlm] |

[slm] fyi Computational biologists combine biology with computer algorithms and databases to conduct biological research on computers - it kinda combines lab work and clinical research... these folks try to simulate using computers what happens on a molecular level in organisms..then basically draw predictions from these simulations.. much is being done now with dna and the whole human genome project...but thats all I know... my guess is that harvard, mit are tops in this field..but thats just a guess.. As far as I know Baylor is a great place to be school wise ::) |

ssalam Alaikum, JazakAllah Khayr for the replies broBOI, and sisRuqayyah. Bioinformatics is a relatively new field that is defined as: "The science of developing computer databases and algorithms for the purpose of speeding up and enhancing biological research." Biotechnology, on the other hand, is the application of engineering and technology to life sciences. Bioinformatics companies are part of the biotechnology industry. The two are comparable, but its more like biotech is a universal set, and bioinfo. is one of the subsets of the bigger universal set. Initially, I was apprehensive of embarking biology with a CS background, but from what the BCM site has to say, there are students currently enrolled in PhD programs, who are from majors as disparate as history and literature. I dont feel so intimidated after all. Wassalam. |
