Borrowing and Entrusting

I am starting a library at our Masjid, Insha Allah.

Currently I am working on library cards and information application forms.

Anyone know a good ayat or hadith saying something about the responsibility of having/borrowing someone elses property?

I always wanted to do that. Especially in inner city masjid's... A dream... but I can't think of a way to make sure people return the stuff.  I've seen some mosque libraries and the return rate is like 50% and that like 3-6 months later!!!

The only way I can think of is to have it open when some supervisor person is there and make people put down a deposit of like $20 and fill out a form with their info.

Or better yet just don't let people take stuff out. They can stay in the library and read and do research...

hmm Kathy what about that hadith about the signs of the hypocrite and one of them is that a Muslim always returns what is entrusted with them. (might be kinda harsh for them though?)  also make sure you stamp that stuff all over PROPERTY OF MASJID PLEASE RETURN etc

Yes, that is the hadith and I can not find it. it is that form that I want to put the hadith on.

I made stamps and put them in the books and on a certain page with in the book, added a secret mark.

It is sad about the return rate... even at the dawah center... and the Christians always returned the books! sigh... and we should be the example.

Our masjid community is small enough... i know where they live! i am thinking of a two week borrow time and then start handing out penalties!

I like the 20. deposit and putting the hadith mentioned on the form to fill out. Maybe you could get a stamp made with that hadith on it and you can stamp any reminder post cards you may have to send out.

Do they have announcements at the Masjid? Like before prayer meetings on Fri or other times? If so may ask if a (not using names) announcement could be made such as:

'Will the brother(s) or sister(s) who have the following books out please return them immediatly to the library as other bros and sisters are waiting to read them. If you're not done please feel free to check them back out at a later date.'  Then they can briefly read the title of the book(s) out.

Then send out the reminder card the very next day.

This announcement has no names mentioned and I think is said in good taste. What do you think Kathy?

Assalamu 'Alaikum,
Anyone know a good ayat or hadith saying something about the responsibility of having/borrowing someone elses property?
- If ye are on a journey and cannot find a scribe a pledge with possession (may serve the purpose). And if one of you deposits a thing on trust with another let the trustee (faithfully) discharge his trust and let him fear his Lord.  Conceal not evidence; for whoever conceals it his heart is tainted with sin.  And Allah knoweth all that ye do. [2:283]

- O ye that believe! betray not the trust of Allah and the apostle nor misappropriate knowingly things entrusted to you. [8:27]

The first 9 verses of Surah Mu'minoon talk about some of the characteristics of believers and the 8th verse talks about trust as well:

- Those who faithfully observe their trust and their covenants;[23:8]

                Here is the hadeeth:

The Prophet said, "Whoever has (the following) four characters will be a hypocrite, and whoever has one of the following four characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy until he gives it up. These are: (1 ) Whenever he talks, he tells a lie; (2) whenever he makes a promise, he breaks it; (3) whenever he makes a covenant he proves treacherous; (4) and whenever he quarrels, he behaves impudently in an evil insulting manner." Narrated by Abdullah bin Amr (Sahih Bukhari).

Wassalam.

How about asking people to fill out a form. The library is opened only on
certain days and certain hours and when people are late they get a phone call reminder. If
they do not return desptite of this. A late fee applies.
